  1. Is This The Worst Portrayal of CIA Agents in Movie?@macchiata998d

    macproperty(26).png

While I’ve been quite swayed with the netflix production of South Korean cinema, I decided to check out American production again. After scrolling through some of them, my choice was “ The Gray Man”, a film released back in 2022 starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. As much as I think that it could be a promising one, I ended up questioning a lot of things after watching this film. The Gray Man is available on Netflix.

This film starts with the scene inside a prison in Florida where a CIA agent named “ Donald Fitzroy” was offering Courtland ( Ryan Gosling) a job to be part of CIA’s secret program called Sierra. In this program, Fitzroy is collecting criminals who will be trained to be someone that can kill but also vanishes without leaving a trace. They are known as the gray man. The film shift to the scene when Courtland, now is known as agent six is currently working on a mission in Bangkok to assasinate someone who allegedly is selling national information that was dangerous for the country if it’s leaked. They had some battle and in the end, the man revealed that he was agent four sierra and told Courtland that the agency is going to kill off every Sierra agent. Before dying, agent four handed out a necklace containing a memory which revealed to contain the dirt from the current CIA chief Denny Carmichael.

Chaos ensues when Six decided not to continue with his mission and was airlifted to the safe house with the help of Donald Fitzroy. At the same time, in the base Carmichael was trying to catch Six and attempt to kill him. Since his attempt was failed, he ended up hiring a former sierra agent turned into the private sector Lloyd (Chris Evans). The problem is, Lloyd is known to be sociopath and even during the chase of six, he tortured Fitzroy. Both of them (Six and Llyod) ended up meeting in Prague and they were doing open shooting during daytime. It was chaotic and with a hostage named Claire, the mission became a lot more complicated with Six. In the end, the corruption that Charmichael did was never revealed with Six and Claire’s ending was still an open-ended question.

In this film, there are so many flaws and that it feels like the story is totally made up. I know it’s a fiction but a lot of fiction I’ve read at least is making quite a sense. First the open shooting in prague where people are present, “ how did that not make a headline?” I mean in this day and age, those type of shooting would make it everywhere. Second of all, it’s not so much of a gray man, where I thought Six would really know how to blend in. Another thing that I find just absurd was how he drove tuktuk from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, like how in the world the thai police doesn’t caught him :D. Bangkok to chiang mai is more than 10 hours by bus and even more by train. Can you imagine going by tuk tuk? What shown was it was late at night in Bangkok and then around midday the next day. From all the CIA operation movies I managed to watch, this one just made me left bewildered. I had quite expectations but everything felt just pure action and thrilled. It was a good amount of time I invested into watching it but it turned out to be so flop. The only thing that’s forgivable is the casts, who saved the movie from being a total disaster.

  2. 🍿 The Gray Man - starring Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Chris Evans [Movie review #10]@gabrielatravels1396d

    Source

Hello moviegoers! Any cool movies watched in the weekend? 😎

Just as you know, from time to time I like to write a review based on a movie or series I've watched, but considering that I went on a little vacation with my boyfriend recently, we didn't have time to see too many movies or series.

However, yesterday we opened up Netflix and pressed the play button on a movie that kept stirring my interest since it was first released, so here we go with a review for one of the cinephile stars of this period - The Gray Man.

    image.png

    Source

    Introduction

It might sound subjective, but for me, when I see Ryan Gosling in a movie, I am absolutely convinced that we are talking about a good movie just because it's one of the big actors that I'm sure won't accept a stupid role in a movie or something that he feels it won't get anywhere. However, when you see both him and Chris Evans in the same movie, then everything is taken to the next level and we can talk about a way larger category of watchers.

Anyway, while I'm used to see Chris Evans in SF roles and especially these that involve superheroes, and Ryan Gostling in comedy or drama movies, The Gray Man came as a completely new challenge for both of the actors since we are talking about an American action thriller film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo that will take them anywhere from hunting to shooting others just for the sake of staying alive.

    image.png

    Source

    Description

The action begins with Ryan Gosling playing Six who is in the prison and gets an offer that he can't refuse, namely to start working for CIA and get involved in all kind of missions to chase the bad guys.

As interesting as it sounds, even from his first mission Six starts uncovering secrets and making all kinds of connections that will take him on a different path from the original one, turning him into a target when it triggers a global hunt by assassins set loose by his ex-colleague.

I don't know how this sounds on your end but for me it seemed instantly as a mix between John Wick and Fast and Furious series because if you will watch this one you will notice it involves lots of cars getting exploded, getting into accidents, or simply being hunted.

    image.png

    Source

Anyway, considering that Netflix had some serious fails in terms of action movies, this time bringing Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in the same film turned out really expensive, The Gray Man becoming quickly the most costly piece released so far by the big portal, exceeding over $200,000.

Though, being a movie made by the Russo brothers who earned their popularity after creating the Avengers series which as much as I love superheroes, it's always hard to maintain my interest from the beginning till the end without pressing the pause button for a few times to do other things just because it's never that kind of action which keeps you on suspense and make you look forward to seeing what happens up next.

Fortunately or not, a pretty similar situation is with The Gray Man where even though you won't see people use superpowers, we still remember professionals in martial arts, spying and even dancing through a rain of bullets without getting hurt too much.

    image.png

    Source

    Opinions

As I said The Gray Man doesn't come with that kind of action which keeps you curious of what happens next and hence why you won't see it running in too many movie theaters because it's more of a movie to watch at home with your friends, but it still counts pretty much to see some famous figures in terms of actors used for this piece which definitely add a bonus to the film.

It's true that even though you earned your popularity as an actor it doesn't necessarily mean that you can play in any genre of movie but it's still nice to explore different paths in the world of cinema and see how far an actor can go.

And last but not least, I think we can all agree that having subtle "powers" added to some of the actors could be appreciated even though sometimes seems like being a little bit too much.

    image.png

    Source

    Conclusions

The Gray Man is some sort of movie created from the leftovers of other famous series like John Wick and Fast & Furious but which managed to control its action pretty well, still making it a pretty good movie to watch at home.

Along with a bunch of money invested in the actors, you can notice that the creators did a great job with all the sound and video effects where they didn't hesitate to offer as much as it was needed for cool results.

As many pros and cons this movie comes with, it's still worth being seen even if it's just for the sake of being up to date on the latest movie Ryan Gostling and Chris Evans were part of.

Have you seen "The Gray Man"?

And if so, what are your thoughts on the whole scenery?

  3. The Gray Man - Film Review [ESP/ENG]@nameless161398d

I never think of being repetitive, but every time I have to review a Netflix original production I focus on whether it entertains me or not and my expectations are always low with respect to the many films that the great streaming service releases during the year, but that does not prevent me from being objective in many of the things that several films show, especially those of the action genre that should necessarily be the most entertaining because in these films there are scenes full of emotion, fights, explosions, gunshots and so on; that is why in this opportunity I review a Netflix action film that created great expectation in both critics and the general public and that for many was left owing.

"My name is Six... Just Six"

This film directed by the Russo Brothers and starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Billy Bob Thornton; had everything to be a box office success if it had been released in theaters, I say this because as I said the directors and actors of this project and to that add the big budget of $ 200 million; all this without any doubt put a weight on the promotion because before its release everyone thought it would be a success having an acceptable or unanimous reception within the opinion of the specialized critics, but it turns out that the opposite happened because it received numerous negative reviews where the main one was that the cost of the film was not appreciated in several scenes and how bad its story was; to be honest, reading negative opinions (not reviews) towards this film, made my low expectations minimal and for me that was the best thing because it made me enjoy this star-studded film with two formerly revered action directors. What the Russo's did in films like "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Captain America: Civil War", as directors and in "21 Bridges", "Extraction" as producers, makes me think that they can deal very well in the creation and control of the action scenes and the combat scenes, chase and others in the second and third part of Captain America, are what I liked about the action scenes in the MCU and that's why I was hoping that in this film I could see again that kind of scenes and precisely those scenes are what I enjoyed the most in "The Gray Man", none of those scenes are flawed, the choreography in the combat scenes and the use of the camera is perfect at the time of long action scenes, that makes it not boring and not too exaggerated, of course there are scenes impossible to believe, but they are not bad although my criticism goes to the use of CGI which could have been better, especially in the train scene.

    Fuente / Source

When you have big stars it is difficult for them to meet expectations because there will always be a character that looks more important than the others; precisely this was one of the complaints presented by the actress Ana de Armas who should have demanded the Russo's so that her character, "Dani Miranda", had more prominence and yes she did because she is more than a companion, she is a prepared and lethal woman in this film; regarding the characters of Gosling and Evans, I liked that both are very different; "Six" has a robotic attitude, he shows no feeling or remorse for what he must do, I like that reference is made as to why he acts that way and Ryan plays him very well, as he has that cold expression needed to play a killer; on the other hand, "Lloyd Hansen" is completely different, there is a great need to be the center of attention and yes he succeeds, he is not very humble, an annoying character and I have no doubt that Evans had a good time playing this character and he is one of the high points of the film. The three actors I think they did very well, there was great chemistry between them and I celebrate that Ana had strength in her voice to be noticed because I think that in the coming years she will be more important than she already is and that the Russo's can count on her in future productions is a great success.

    Fuente / Source

Many of the negative reviews this film received were focused on the story which seemed to show no emotion or drama; Personally, I never expected a film that made me think about the drama or depth of its story, I just wanted to see the good and fun action scenes it has and with this I do not mean that this film is perfect because it is not, it is not very original, full of clichés, but with that I had no problem, the problem is that it could have been better and I can agree that the budget could have been used to pay so many famous actors and locations, but I think it could have used better CGI and make better action scenes. I think movies nowadays want to exploit an idea and turn it into a franchise before a first film can reach success; with this I mean that I understand part of the criticism in the story that seemed not to be fully developed and even moments held back from showing something more of all the characters that appear in this film and that's because as it was already confirmed, there will be a sequel and even a spin-off; this makes Netflix has its own franchise of spies and assassins and regardless of the criticisms (exaggerated in my opinion) we will have to continue discovering much more about "Six", its allies and enemies.

  4. The Gray Man : Mainstream movie without soul | Film Review [En - Es]@jcrodriguez1411d

I resume my film reviews, after a period of creative drought, which I have taken advantage of to rest, after more than six hundred published reviews. This time I will talk about a popular and recently released film and perhaps many will differ from my opinion.

What makes a movie incredibly good? A cast of big Hollywood stars? There are many movies that had an impressive cast with popular actors and actresses and didn't deliver the results expected by producers, critics and audiences.

Stories based on successful books? There are some sagas that did replicate the success of the original material, they were good adaptations. But there are also some literary sagas that ended up being a huge fiasco.

A huge budget? Big budgets can create wonderful films like James Cameron's Titanic, but they can also result in outrageous flops like Cleopatra and Waterworld.

The viewer's personal preference? Perhaps a large portion think this, as art is subjective, in a way, but for me it is only a valid argument on a personal level, as when exploring the impact of a film on a socio-cultural level you have to extend it to what we would call a collective opinion after making several evaluations of the work and the audience response divided into several categories .

Is The Gray Man a successful film? I think for the Netflix platform it is an undisputed success , but what I really wonder is it an incredibly good movie?

The Gray Man may be entertaining to a large segment of the audience. Yes, to a certain extent it is. I'm not going to say it's a bad movie, it's simply an escapist movie. A movie with lots of action, scenes of destruction, gunplay, the whole explosive cocktail of this type of movie.

I have nothing against 100% entertainment movies, I like movies in general, I have some action sagas that are my guilty pleasure and I enjoy them, with all the inconsistencies they may have and where the protagonists seem to have superhuman powers to get out of everything unscathed. Also, yesterday I saw a couple of movies from the same platform, which cost less money and of other genres, but have been very well received by the public, I'll talk about them another time.

What is my problem with this film? There are several, but I'll start with the most important one. As I watched the main character spend the entire footage avoiding capture and murder, I felt no emotional connection to those scenes. Ideally I would feel tension, some kind of excitement, but no, none of that, I just felt a void.

This reminds me of when I was a kid and every Sunday on a TV channel in my country, they would show an action movie that, when it was over, I would completely forget about them. They were lost hours, where I would see images on a screen that would quickly fade from my memory, much less see again.

The same thing happened to me with this movie. It's one of the ones I immediately forgot about. It's worth nothing that it stars Gosling, Evans and the beautiful Ana de Armas. It's a soulless film and I'm unlikely to see it again.

There is one fact that has been all over the news before and during the Netflix release, supposedly it's a production that cost $200 million. holy cow! It's just that sometimes I have a hard time understanding the decisions of the executives who approve these types of projects.

On the one hand, I'm happy for all the direct and indirect jobs that a film project of this magnitude means, but as a viewer I'm just disappointed with the end result. Already the Russo brothers had left me annoyed with their previous film, which I also reviewed and it was not good.

I have seen so many low budget productions with better stories that I can only imagine how many good movies can be made with that kind of money.

Let's go with an example, another recent film and from a well known production company. The movie All at once according to The Numbers page had a production cost of 25 million and its action scenes were more exciting than those of The Grey Man and it is a movie I would watch again several times, because its story is good, it has soul and those who made that movie for A24 took a risk with something original and moved away from the search to create a franchise to exploit. do you see the difference?

Was such an exorbitant expense necessary? From my point of view no, but Netflix is looking like crazy to create a kind of saga that hooks the audience and I'm sure the movie will be a success of visualizations, as was Red Alert, another expensive movie but worse than The Gray Man , that movie not even Gal Gadot could save it. But there it is among the most watched movies on the platform, it's what the audience wants to consume or maybe they do it because they have no other choice. Just like when I watched action movies on Sundays when I was a kid. I had no choice but to swallow what the TV channels offered me.

Another weakness is the lack of a scary villain. Chris Evans makes a totally cartoonish villain, with a ridiculous mustache that for me was unbearable to watch. There is a problem in the tone of the movie, at times it wants to be serious and at other parts it wants to use some comedy, much in the style of what the Russo brothers did with Marvel.

The other villain, the CIA supervisor is another flat and empty character, who doesn't transmit anything. Not even because he tries to look like a badass, I laughed at all his scenes. There are movies whose heroes may be flat, but the villains are more developed and make a difference in the story. But nothing like that happens here, all the characters are flat, empty, like the whole movie.

Do you know how many screenwriters were needed to write this adaptation? Three. One of the Russo's and the other two also worked with them on the movies they did for Marvel. No wonder they have so much Marvel style, no sex scenes, no love scenes, just action sequences interspersed with brief scenes to make jokes that were not funny, a scene where they destroy half the city and mediocre villains. They only lacked to put them in costumes and powers.

By the way, I'm going to spoil a scene, but I thought it was too absurd what they did. Gosling and Ana de Armas play professional assassins, but in one scene the main villain is sedated by Ana de Armas' character who shoots darts at him to put him to sleep. It is the man who goes to look for them later to kill them, but they, professional killers, leave him asleep on the floor, only flato them to put him a pillow and a coat so that his neck does not hurt and be cold while he was sedated. End of spoiler

The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Mark Greaney , who has written other books about the same character, Sierra Six, there is enough material for Netflix to keep making movies in this universe. I think they already announced a sequel and they are preparing a spin off, not much is known about the spin off, but everything points to it will be about the character played by Ana de Armas, the actress is rising more and more , so they are going to take advantage that she is one of the popular actresses of the moment.

I haven't read any of the novels, but I don't think they will have the same tone they gave to the movie. I'm also not sure they're going to spend another couple hundred million on the sequel, it will all depend on the results in viewings for Netflix to shell out a similar amount, although anything is possible.

The Gray Man is an action movie in the style of the Russo brothers, many people will see it, the number of views on Netflix will continue to rise, but it will only be remembered for the cost of production, since its story is forgettable, it will not be a movie that over the years people will watch again, as happens with others that have become unforgettable classics. But it will serve in the future as an example to study the consumer behavior of our time.

Leave me your opinion in the comments.
