Te puedes imaginar un mundo donde tus emociones pueden ser controladas por alguien a través de una droga, que con ellas pierdas cualquier poder de decisión y que tus sentimientos se desprendan completamente de la realidad que se te presenta. Este es el tema del thriller psicológico que nos presenta el director Joseph Kosinski.
De entrada el tema me resultó súper atrayente, el hecho de estar enmarcada como una realidad futurista siempre nos ubica en un contexto de lo posible, partiendo de la premisa de que todo aquello que se es posible pensar también supone la posibilidad de realización. Y así entre una idea y otra me dispuse a disfrutar la película, acá te cuento algo de la trama.
La trama
Nos encontramos en un espacio de observación, escuchamos la voz de un hombre que detrás de un vidrio hace reír al observado con unos chistes, luego le dice que lo siguiente no es chiste, sino realidad, el hombre observado no para de reír aunque la noticia enunciada es trágica. Los dos científicos observadores celebran el triunfo del experimento.
El científico que dirige la investigación es Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) y su colaborador es Mark Verlaine (Mark Paguio) ambos llevan adelante unos experimentos con drogas que producen el estado emocional que ellos desean. Los conejillos de indias son criminales que cumpliendo condena y bajo la oferta de reducirles las penas entrar como voluntarios al programa, siendo trasladados a un centro penitenciario.
El lugar es una hermosa isla con unas instalaciones de primera donde los reos viven con comodidad: habitaciones individuales, excelente comida, una sala de interacción donde hombres y mujeres establecen relaciones de amistad y compañerismo. Una oferta nada desdeñable para aquel que esta privado de libertad.
Entre estos reos se encuentra Jeff (Miles Teller). Jeff es el centro del experimento en él se han ido probando las distintas drogas, entre ellas, las que estimulan la afectividad, la alegría, el terror y hasta una que aumenta la capacidad de expresar con palabras todo lo que piensa y acontece. Sus respuestas positivas han permitido profundizar en la experimentación.
Sin embargo, Jeff, comienza a cuestionar el experimento, lo que en un principio consideró como una contribución a mejorar el mundo y que de alguna manera lo ayudaría a expiar su culpa se va transformando al darse cuenta que para Steve el experimento tiene otros fines por lo que se niega a aceptar ciertos avances.
El mismo sentimiento lo tiene Marx, el ayudante, quien desde la admiración por el trabajo de Steve y con la firme creencia de hacer del mundo un lugar mejor, ayudando a las personas a controlar sus emociones , se va dando cuenta que Steve se está saliendo de control.
Steve, ducho en el arte de la manipulación, logra convencer a Marx de continuar y presiona a Jeff para que realice una “acción voluntaria” que exige el experimento y que afecta directamente a la joven convicta Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) con quien ha establecido nexos afectivos reales. Aquí se desencadena la acción que conduce al final de la película.
Comentario intencionado
Dejé el final de la película sin ningún detalle porque me resultó insípido, como un cierre a la carrera de quien ya está cansado de lo que viene haciendo y dice algo como: — ¡Ya!, vamos a salir de esto, termínalo como sea— La película comienza muy bien, el tema va agarrando consistencia, crea expectativas, un toque de suspenso creciente y una trama que se va desarrollando a buen ritmo, una música conocida y pegajosa que hasta te provoca bailarla, unos exteriores, aunque pocos, bellísimos, pero un final que desencanta quizás por lo aparatoso y “poco serio”.
En cuanto a las actuaciones están muy bien distribuidas las cargas actorales, Chris Hemsworth y Miles Teller llevan prácticamente el mismo peso, cada uno destacando muy bien en su papel. Hemsworth, la imagen del triunfador, seguro de sí mismo, con poder y una mente brillante que poco a poco se va desmoronando por un pasado que lo atormenta y le duele.
A Teller la culpa lo arropa, en principio está dispuesto a todo, considera que es la vía para sanar su mente y espíritu. Su personaje es como contenido, como si la vergüenza y la ira no le cupiesen en el cuerpo y aún con ello a la hora que Steve le exige traspasar los límites de sus valores éticos y morales, no puede, no está dispuesto.
Aunque el control de las emociones por parte de terceros no es un tema nuevo en el cine ni tampoco en la vida real, la película, quizás por su ambientación futurista cercana le da un aire de novedoso y que en muchos sentidos te horrorizas de todas las posibilidades que ello implicaría, el poder en su máxima expresión, esto hace que de pronto, veas a Steve, como un ser malvado que la codicia lo domina.
De tal manera que la película nos pone las dos bandejas y no precisamente del bien contra el mal sino de sus variantes donde el bueno no es tan bueno y el malo no es tan malo.
En este sentido el guion es hábil, nos pone a reflexionar en las causales de los crímenes y por los cuales una persona termina en la cárcel. Jeff y Lizzy están cumpliendo condena por hechos no intencionados, son errores de vida por actos de irresponsabilidad con consecuencias trágicas. Para quien mira desde fuera de pronto es fácil juzgar, sin embargo, la culpa es tan pesada que la compasión se despierta y no puedes dejar de reconocer que la vida da giros inesperados que ponen a cualquiera en situaciones penosas.
Así que, aunque no me gusto el final, la película nos regala un buen rato en una tarde cualquiera y eso tiene su valor.

Teller is wrapped up in guilt, in principle he is willing to do anything, he considers it the way to heal his mind and spirit. His character is restrained, as if shame and anger do not fit in his body and yet when Steve demands that he push the limits of his ethical and moral values, he cannot, he is not willing.
Although the control of emotions by third parties is not a new theme in film or in real life, the film, perhaps because of its near-futuristic setting gives it an air of novelty and in many ways you are horrified by all the possibilities that this would imply, power at its maximum expression, this makes you suddenly see Steve as an evil being that greed dominates him.
In such a way that the film puts us the two trays and not precisely of good against evil but of its variants where the good is not so good and the bad is not so bad.
In this sense the script is skillful, it makes us reflect on the causes of crimes and why a person ends up in jail. Jeff and Lizzy are serving time for unintentional acts, they are life mistakes for acts of irresponsibility with tragic consequences. For the outsider, it is suddenly easy to judge, but the guilt is so heavy that compassion is aroused and you can't help but recognize that life takes unexpected turns that put anyone in distressing situations.
So, although I did not like the ending, the film gives us a good time on any given afternoon and that has its value.
