Tenzing Shifts the Everest Narrative Back Where It Belongs

Review by @danielcarrerag 🏆#135 🎵47 🎬101 📺111 · 7h · of Tenzing · 7 views

Tenzing, the newest Apple TV+ original film, tells the story of the first two men to reach the top of the world. But unlike previous takes, it’s framed entirely through the eyes of Tenzing Norgay—an Indian-born man who went on to become the most famous Sherpa guide in history. After watching it, I can say it was a completely different experience compared to Matchbox.

The story opens with a young Tenzing in a small Indian village, working as a yak herder amidst the mountains and waking up to breathtaking views of Everest every single day. To him, the mountain is Chomolungma: a deity, the mother of the universe. He feels a deep, persistent call to climb her. However, after a plague wipes out his family's herd, they are forced to leave for Nepal. There, Tenzing falls ill, and his parents leave him at a monastery to heal while they go look for work—a journey from which they never return.

Years pass, and Tenzing grows into adulthood. He meets Dawa, who becomes his wife and the mother of his two daughters. Together, they decide to pursue Tenzing’s dream: becoming a Sherpa and joining expeditions up Everest. Eventually, he gets his chance, nearly reaching the summit alongside a Swiss team. Just a year later, the British secure a permit to climb and request Tenzing to lead the Sherpa crew. The expedition is headed by John Hunt (Willem Dafoe) and includes several British climbers along with two New Zealanders—one of them being Ed Hillary (Tom Hiddleston).

The film maintains a deliberate, reflective pace, weaving back and forth between Tenzing’s past and present to flesh out his character while instilling a deeply spiritual, almost mystical vibe. Tenzing remains the sole anchor of the narrative, which I really appreciated. Instead of romanticizing the climb as a grand imperial conquer—the way the British framed it back then—the movie stands as a tribute to a man who lived a harsh life, loved his roots deeply, and saw the mountain as an extension of himself.

This was honestly my favorite aspect of the story: the profound spiritual bond between the local mountain communities and the peak they revere as a goddess. Sherpas don’t call it Everest; to them, it’s Chomolungma, Mother Goddess of the Earth. It brought to mind Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall. While the Indigenous Pemon people call it Kerepakupai Vená, Western explorers often erase native names in their rush to claims of conquest.

This theme peaks in a conversation between Tenzing and Ed, where they reflect on why previous expeditions failed. The British viewed the climb as a conquest—nature was an enemy to be tamed. The Sherpas, on the other hand, saw themselves as part of the mountain itself: the peak as the bones, and them as the blood flowing through it. That connection is precisely what allowed the Sherpas to map out the safest routes, enabling them to guide thousands to the summit today.

Since the film is grounded in history, the outcome is no secret. One of the greatest historical debates surrounding Everest has always been which man set foot on the summit first. I loved how the film respected the real-life stance Tenzing and Ed maintained until the end: that they reached the top together. So many cinematic adaptations lean into controversy or fabricate drama for cheap thrill, but this film stays true to history. Paired with stunning cinematography, breathtaking landscapes, and a deeply moving narrative, it's a journey well worth taking.
