The Tomb Raider shoots into theaters March 16th and I have to say it's looking pretty good from the trailers. I have played most of the Tomb Raider games and I have always enjoyed Lara Croft as a good character who is female(the way it should be done) as opposed to the modern style of a female character, where female is pretty much the whole character. Couple that with cool action-adventure plots and sprinkle in some archaeology and puzzle solving and you have(almost always) a good and interesting game. Now the big question is will it be able to translate these things to the screen? From what I have seen from the trailers it looks like they are definitely headed in the right direction.
The Tomb Raider herself is Swedish actress Alicia Vikander. I have not seen any of her other films but she appears(in the trailer at least) to balance the right level of toughness and impulsiveness that Lara has in her early years. This movie appears to be based on her first ever adventure so hopefully we can expect some growth over the course of the story moving her closer to her more mature character.
Walton Goggins appears to be the principal villain of the film (along with a global extermination cult, always fun) and I'm glad to see him getting his chance at a big screen villain. His role as Boyd Crowder in Justified proved he was adept at projecting that aura of charm while also seeming dangerous and hiding his true motives. I am confident he will do a good job in his role regardless of the quality of the rest of the movie.
The action and effects both looked well done and the story is simple but interesting. I know video game to movie adaptions have a bad reputation but it seems like this one is more "inspired" lets say than actually trying to do a one to one adaptation, and I think that was the right way to go. Lara Croft deserves another chance at the spotlight after the last "adaptation" in the early 2000s.
