Since my last movie review was decently received, I decided I'll try my hand again at writing another! This time around we'll be taking a look at a film I quote enjoyed which was released last year, Swiss Army Man! Swiss Army Man was directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who also both wrote the film. The somewhat new directors who have mostly just worked on short videos and episodes of TV series in the past really proved their mettle with this oddly beautiful film. Swiss Army man is a very strange, unique, and hilarious comedy/tragedy movie that some may find a bit too odd to finish. I honestly can say this is probably in the top 10 weird films I've ever seen, and I love it.
Our main character for this film is named Hank (Played by Paul Dano), who has been stranded on an island for weeks is just about to give up hope and commit suicide, when our other main character Manny (Played by Daniel Radcliffe) washes ashore. Hank stops his act of suicide midway to go check on Manny who he believes is a shipwreck survivor who has washed ashore. However, Manny, is a corpse. A very, very flatulent corpse. Hanks attempts to revive Manny fail, and the tide starts to wash the body away. Hank watches as the corpse's flatulence propels it about on the water. This gives Hank the strange idea to mount the corpse and use it as something similar to a jet ski to ride across the ocean. So starts the bizarre adventures of our duo.
This movie will have you wondering if you're watching a mixture of Cast Away with Fight Club for the majority of it. It's a perfect blend of psychological thriller, comedy, and a survival story all mixed up into one amazingly strange film. The cinematography and musical soundtrack for this film are both absolutely beautiful, especially the score which matches the tone and feel of the film quite well. I honestly feel the term dreamlike fits this film extremely well, with things like the characters sometimes singing in sync with the score, the speed slows down and speeds up with the pace of the characters talking, etc.
Daniel Radcliffe gives an amazing performance for how bizarre his character is, almost childlike with how naive and kindhearted he is. Dano also gives an amazing performance as well, giving a very straightforward solemn performance that makes you question if he's gone nuts and this is all just a dream. This film denies explaining itself, or spoon feeding reasoning to the audience, and stays committed to the Directors vision. It's extremely impressive, hilarious, and touching at times. I would highly recommend this film to anyone in need of something to watch right now!
