It has been a good while since the last time I saw a good zombie film so when I saw this movie was released on Netflix I was more than happy to give it a watch. I am not the biggest fan when it comes to stories with zombies, but once in a while, I like to watch this type of mindless film.

They provide a similar type of entertainment as action movies with monsters just as Godzilla vs Kong or Mortal Kombat, I mention those 2 films because they are relatively recent. Army of the Dead has a generic name but an original plot and I don't think it is a movie that should be taken entirely seriously. It is just a movie to provide some fun to the viewer without forcing them to question every little detail they see on the screen.

Main names associated with the film

The main name behind this movie is its director, Zack Snyder. The same guy who directed the recently released new version of the Justice League movie, and in the past, he was the main director when it comes to DC films. He directed the films Batman vs Superman, Man of Steel and Watchmen. Another 2 great films directed by him were Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, a great animated film about an innocent owl facing some very evil owls, and 300, the popular movie where 300 Spartans fight against Persians.

Every film directed by Snyder has been a great film. He has also directed shorts and has been doing so since the late 80s but those are much less popular. This is the second zombie film directed by him, the first one was also the first major movie where he worked as a director called Dawn of the Dead, which is also an extremely popular zombie film. The stories between that film and Army of the Dead aren't related to each other by the way. With such a talented director it shouldn't be a surprise for Army of the Dead to be a good film.

When it comes to the cast, there weren't many popular faces but the truth is this movie doesn't require popular faces to achieve its entertainment goals. The main character is played by Dave Bautista who is best known for his role as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy film and in some of the Avengers films as well. This guy is great for action movies because he can easily play the role of a soldier or a fighter.

Ha pasado un buen tiempo desde la última vez que vi una buena película de zombies, así que cuando vi que esta película se estrenaba en Netflix, estaba más que feliz de verla. No soy el mayor fanático de las historias con zombis, pero de vez en cuando me gusta ver este tipo de películas sin sentido.

Proporcionan un tipo de entretenimiento similar a las películas de acción con monstruos como Godzilla vs Kong o Mortal Kombat, menciono esas 2 películas porque son relativamente recientes. Army of the Dead tiene un nombre genérico pero una trama original y no creo que sea una película que deba tomarse del todo en serio. Another member of the cast that I kind of recognize but wasn't entirely sure was Hiroyuki Sanada, he plays a secondary role and some of his previous works were in the recently released Mortal Kombat movie, Westworld, and Avengers: Endgame, he didn't receive much screen time in these productions but in Mortal Kombat he played Scorpion which was an important character. The rest of the cast were actors and actresses that I was seeing for the first time and most people wouldn't know them.

What was the movie about?

The story takes place in Las Vegas, as can be seen in the poster with that design doing a reference to a casino. The origin of the existence of zombies in that city isn't explained but everything begins with an accident when a group of military men was transporting something, and another car causes an ugly collision by accident. This is the first silly thing we will see in the film because that collision could have been easily prevented by the other military vehicles who were supposed to protect the one with the load. As I mentioned before, this isn't a film to take entirely seriously and to be constantly questioning everything.

After that collision, we will see what it is exactly they were transporting and then the apocalypse taking place in the city. The zombie apocalypse provides the extreme settings for the real plot, which is about doing a massive robbery and emptying the vault of one of the casinos. There aren't laws in the city anymore so anyone that can open the vault and survive the bunch of zombies can just keep the money and everything they can find.

The plan for this robbery was made by the wealthy owner of the casino who was probably the only person who knew there was a helicopter at the top of the building. There was everything the team needed to successfully rob the vault, the only dangerous thing would be avoiding being killed by the zombies. So this wasn't really a robbery but actually a plan to recover a lot of money, or at least that's what most people thought.

These zombies aren't all retards like in a lot of zombie movies, the majority is indeed the typical zombie that doesn't think much but there are a handful of zombies that somehow retained some intelligence and these are the most dangerous ones. We will also see a cool zombie tiger that acted as some kind of guardian dog in a zone inside Las Vegas.

Como mencioné antes, esta no es una película para tomarse del todo en serio y cuestionarlo todo constantemente.

Después de esa colisión, veremos qué es exactamente lo que estaban transportando y luego el apocalipsis que tiene lugar en la ciudad. El apocalipsis zombi proporciona los escenarios extremos para la trama real, que se trata de realizar un robo masivo y vaciar la bóveda de uno de los casinos. Ya no hay leyes en la ciudad, por lo que cualquiera que pueda abrir la bóveda y sobrevivir al grupo de zombis puede quedarse con el dinero y todo lo que pueda encontrar.

El plan para este robo lo hizo el rico propietario del casino, quien probablemente era la única persona que sabía que había un helicóptero en la parte superior del edificio. Había todo lo que el equipo necesitaba para robar con éxito la bóveda, lo único peligroso sería evitando ser asesinado por los zombies. También veremos un tigre zombi genial que actuó como una especie de perro guardián en una zona dentro de Las Vegas.

The team is very varied, the group leader as mentioned before is played by Dave Bautista, he is a mercenary and is in charge of finding the other members of the team to accomplish this plan. There will be the helicopter pilot obviously, the guy who can crack the vault's door, there was a woman who knew the insides of the zombie controlled Las Vegas and served as a guide, and a few other members were there simply to add muscle and manpower to battle the zombies.

There will be some drama between the main character and his daughter but this turned out to be very irrelevant for the actual plot of the film. There will be betrayals, a bit of drama, and mostly cool action scenes involving all of those zombies. Also, there will be a lot of deaths, which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings, and the camera work?

The performances were generic for the most part, this is a mindless action film which means the characters only need to run, shoot and fight against the zombies, little else is required. There were a few attempts at comedy especially with the acting style of one character called Dieter.

The settings were really cool, seeing Las Vegas controlled by zombies and seeing so many fights taking place inside casinos felt fresh. Some shots showing the zombies and their city were quite epic and something similar can be said about the action scenes. The director did a great job making this film something entertaining.

Final thoughts

If you are looking for a deep plot or a thought-provoking movie, this and any other zombie film aren't for you. I would recommend this flick only to those in the mood to watch some fun action scenes that don't require any thinking from the viewer. There is some gore which some people might find distasteful but honestly, this is a requirement in order to have a good zombie film.

I think Army of the Dead provided what I was looking for and is, therefore, a worth watching film.

El equipo es muy variado, el líder del grupo como se mencionó anteriormente es interpretado por Dave Bautista, es un mercenario y se encarga de buscar a los otros miembros del equipo para cumplir con este plan. Obviamente estará el piloto del helicóptero, el tipo que puede abrir la puerta de la bóveda, había una mujer que conocía el interior de Las Vegas controlada pro zombis y servía como guía, y algunos otros miembros estaban allí simplemente para agregar músculo y poder para luchar contra los zombies.

Habrá algo de drama entre el personaje principal y su hija, pero esto resultó ser muy irrelevante para la trama real de la película. Habrá traiciones, un poco de drama y, en su mayoría, escenas de acción geniales que involucran a todos esos zombis. Además, habrá muchas muertes, lo que no debería sorprender a nadie.

Algunas tomas que muestran a los zombies y su ciudad fueron bastante épicas y se puede decir algo similar sobre las escenas de acción. El director hizo un gran trabajo haciendo de esta película algo entretenido.

Reflexiones finales

Si estás buscando una trama profunda o una película que te haga reflexionar, esta y cualquier otra película de zombies no es para ti. Recomendaría esta película solo a aquellos que estén de humor para ver algunas escenas de acción divertidas que no requieren que el espectador piense. Hay algo de sangre que algunas personas pueden encontrar de mal gusto, pero honestamente, este es un requisito para tener una buena película de zombies.

Creo que Army of the Dead proporcionó lo que estaba buscando y, por lo tanto, es una película que vale la pena ver.

There were some mistakes, such as a zombie on top of a building watching a helicopter departing and still arriving first to another building. This means the zombie went to the ground level, got on top of his zombie horse, they started to ran and still were able to beat the helicopter? This is why I say this is a mindless film.

Hubo algunos errores, tales como cuando un zombi mira desde el tope de un edificio a un helicoptero despegar y aún así el zombi llega antes que el helicoptero al otro edificio. Esto quiere decir, que el zombi bajo a planta baja, se monto en su caballo empezó a correr y de alguna manera fue más rápido que el helicoptero. Es por esto que digo que este film no es para tomarselo en serio.
