2 years ago Netflix released one of its best animated series called Love, Death & Robots. I wasn't sure what to expect back in that time but decided to give it a watch just to see if it was worth it and it was. The first season had 18 episodes in total, each of them with its own unique story and using different animation styles.
Anthologies got quite popular in recent years and I believe this was caused by Black Mirror, this series could be considered something like an animated mini Black Mirror and this becomes obvious when we see the introductory animation that kinds of copy the Black Mirror introductory animation.
I didn't enjoy all of its episodes in the first season but I did enjoy it enough to become a fan of this series. This was clear from the beginning a creative experiment from Netflix to see how the subscribers would react. The stories were all very different, and with no relation to each other whatsoever, so people who enjoy animation will surely have a few stories they enjoy.
The expectations were very high with this show but I am sad to say season 2 wasn't even half as good as season 1, plus, it only had 8 episodes, nowhere near 18 episodes like the first season. In the section below I will provide a brief summary of each episode so any reader can best decide which one is of their interest, I figured I could share this because 8 episodes aren't that many.
What was season 2 about?
First, let's remember this series is an anthology so the episodes of any season can be seen in any order. You can watch the last episode of season 2 and then the first episode of season 1 without any problem whatsoever because they all are independent.
Episode 1 "Automated Customer Service": the premise of this episode is similar to the one called Life Hutch, this is the domestic version of the same idea. In this episode, we have an old lady living with her small dog. She has a cool robot who does all the cleaning but suddenly something appears to be wrong with the robot. All hell will break loose and a total chaos will begin inside her home caused by the malfunctioning robot. The premise can sound a little bit fun but it gave me the impression the show has stopped taken itself too seriously.

No estaba seguro de qué esperar en ese momento, pero decidí darle un vistazo solo para ver si valía la pena y sin duda así fue. La primera temporada tuvo 18 episodios en total, cada uno de ellos con su propia historia única y usando diferentes estilos de animación.
Las antologías se hicieron bastante populares en los últimos años y creo que esto fue en parte gracias a Black Mirror, esta serie podría considerarse algo así como un mini Black Mirror animado y esto se vuelve obvio cuando vemos la animación introductoria que copia la animación introductoria de Black Mirror.
No disfruté todos sus episodios en la primera temporada, pero lo disfruté lo suficiente como para convertirme en fan de esta serie. Esto era claramente desde el principio un experimento creativo de Netflix para ver cómo reaccionarían los suscriptores. Las historias eran todas muy diferentes y sin relación alguna entre sí, por lo que las personas que disfrutan de la animación seguramente tendrán algunas historias que disfrutarán.
Las expectativas eran muy altas con este programa, pero lamento decir que la temporada 2 no fue ni la mitad de buena que la temporada 1, además, solo tuvo 8 episodios, ni cerca de los 18 episodios de la primera temporada. En la siguiente sección, proporcionaré un breve resumen de cada episodio para que cualquier lector pueda decidir mejor cuál es de su interés, pensé que podría compartir esto porque 8 episodios no son tantos.
¿De qué se trató la temporada 2?
Primero recordemos que esta serie es una antología por lo que los episodios de cualquier temporada se pueden ver en cualquier orden. Puedes ver el último episodio de la temporada 2 y luego el primer episodio de la temporada 1 sin ningún problema porque todos son independientes.
Episodio 1 "Automated Customer Service": la premisa de este episodio es similar al llamado Life Hutch, esta es la versión doméstica de la misma idea. En este episodio, tenemos a una anciana viviendo con su perrito. Ella tiene un robot genial que hace toda la limpieza, pero de repente algo parece estar mal con el robot. Todo el infierno se desatará y un caos total comenzará dentro de su casa causado por el mal funcionamiento del robot. La premisa puede sonar un poco divertida, pero me dio la impresión de que el programa dejó de tomarse a sí mismo demasiado en serio.

Episode 2 "Ice": this was a cool episode. It takes place in another planet colonized by humans but things don't really futuristic they look kind of dystopic instead. A family just moved to this planet and almost all the population have superhuman abilities, including 1 of the 2 teenage boys from this family. The unmodded teen has a hard time fitting in but makes the effort of going out with his brother and his friends to have fun one night. I like how they portrayed this nightlife with modded teens and the type of fun they were able to have.
Episode 3 "Pop Squad": this episode uses realistic animation that look almost like real life. The story takes place in a dystopic future where humanity has reached immortality and there are agents that control the population to prevent issues related to overpopulation.
The natural tendency to have children still exists in many people but this is now a criminal act. The main character is one of the agents that make sure no new human is born and we see how he starts changing his opinion.
Episode 4 "Snow in the Desert": just like the previous one, this episode also has excellent animation that looks like real life. The story is about an albino that has a weird but very valuable genetic mutation, and since this is super important some people are willing to do anything it takes to obtain this information.
Episode 5 "The Tall Grass": this episode isn't futuristic, unlike the previous ones. The main character is a regular guy traveling on a train when it suddenly stops in the middle of a field with very tall grass. He goes out to take some fresh air when he catches a glimpse of something strange inside the grass field. What follows would be an intense journey with a good surprise.
Episode 6 "All Through the House": this was the shortest episode of the entire season, only lasting around 7 minutes. It is Christmas day and 2 young siblings are waiting for Santa to arrive with their presents. They heard a noise, went downstairs, and what they encountered will leave them speechless.
Episode 7 "Life Hutch": this is the episode with a premise similar to the one in the first episode. That one was the domestic version and this is the space military version. Instead of having a domestic cleaning robot suddenly malfunctioning and doing crazy stuff, this time we have a maintenance robot doing the same. The animation style was very realistic, and this robot is much more serious and less silly than the one in the first episode. I think they should have only produced either this one or the first episode because they are pretty much the same. This one has better animation and some cool action scenes but still, they felt like different versions of the same story.
Episodio 2 "Ice": este fue un episodio genial. Tiene lugar en otro planeta colonizado por humanos, pero las cosas no parecen del todo futuristas, sino que parecen más bien distópicas. Una familia se acaba de mudar a este planeta y casi toda la población tiene habilidades sobrehumanas, incluido 1 de los 2 adolescentes de esta familia. El adolescente no modificado tiene dificultades para adaptarse, pero hace el esfuerzo de salir con su hermano y sus amigos para divertirse una noche. Me gusta cómo retrataron esta vida nocturna con adolescentes modificados y el tipo de diversión que pudieron tener.
Episodio 3 "Pop Squad": este episodio utiliza una animación realista que se parece casi a la vida real. La historia se desarrolla en un futuro distópico donde la humanidad ha alcanzado la inmortalidad y hay agentes que controlan a la población para prevenir problemas relacionados con la superpoblación. La tendencia natural a tener hijos todavía existe en muchas personas, pero ahora se trata de un acto delictivo. El personaje principal es uno de los agentes que se aseguran de que no nazca ningún humano nuevo y vemos cómo comienza a cambiar de opinión.
Episodio 4 "Snow in the Desert": al igual que el anterior, este episodio también tiene una excelente animación que parece la vida real. La historia trata sobre un albino que tiene una mutación genética extraña pero muy valiosa, y dado que esto es muy importante, algunas personas están dispuestas a hacer todo lo posible para obtener esta información.
Episodio 5 "The Tall Grass": este episodio no es futurista, a diferencia de los anteriores. Episodio 7 "Life Hutch": este es el episodio con una premisa similar a la del primer episodio. Esa era la versión doméstica y esta es la versión militar espacial. En lugar de que un robot de limpieza doméstico que de repente funciona mal y hace locuras, esta vez tenemos un robot de mantenimiento que hace lo mismo. El estilo de animación era muy realista, y este robot es mucho más serio y menos infantil que el del primer episodio. Creo que hubiera sido mejor solo haber producido este o el primer episodio porque son más o menos lo mismo. Este tiene una mejor animación y algunas escenas de acción geniales, pero aún así, se sentían como versiones diferentes de la misma historia. .png)

Episode 8 "The Drowned Giant": this was the episode I enjoyed the most because I felt like it was the most creative, original, and thought-provoking story. The episode has the main character narrating what he sees and what he thinks. The crazy event is that a giant human is found dead on a shore, and no one knows where he comes from. It isn't a giant toy it is an actual giant that drowned in the sea and died. This story reminded me of a cool short I watched some months ago which you can find here, and I was actually expecting a similar final twist. How were the animation styles and the quality of the writing?
If you are wondering, I enjoy all the episodes except 1 and 6. However, since the expectations were very high I felt a bit disappointed with the new season. I was hoping for something even better than season 1 and this was not only shorter in the number of episodes, but it also has less creativity than before. This show is still one of the best animated series out there nonetheless.
The animation was varied which is what I was expecting because the same happened in season 1. I tend to prefer realistic animations but I can also appreciate more artistic styles, for example, episode 2 and episode 5 have artistic animation and not realistic and this works great in both cases.
The writing was acceptable but I would like to have seen some cool twists in a few of the stories. In the first season, the episode called Beyond the Aquila Rift had one of the best scifi twists I have ever seen. This season has nothing similar to that.
Final thoughts
Love, Death & Robots continues to be a good show but the second season is far from being as enjoyable as the first one. There are not only fewer episodes but they are also not as creative and intriguing as those from season 1. Nevertheless, season 2 is still worth watching if you tend to enjoy cool animated scifi.
This season is still worth watching but it would be good to adjust the expectations. If you are looking for more animated anthologies, I would recommend watching the Animatrix, which has several stories that take place in the Matrix world, and there is also an animated Japanese anthology film from 1995 called Memories which has 3 stories but I only enjoyed the one called Magnetic Rose.

Episodio 8 "The Drowned Giant": este fue el episodio que más disfruté porque sentí que era la historia más creativa, original y que te hace pensar. El episodio tiene al personaje principal narrando lo que ve y lo que piensa. El loco evento en esta historia es que un humano gigante es encontrado muerto en la orilla y nadie sabe de dónde viene. No es un juguete gigante, es un gigante real que se ahogó en el mar y murió. Esta historia me recordó a un cortometraje genial que vi hace algunos meses y que puedes encontrar aquí , y en realidad estaba esperando un giro final similar. ¿Cómo eran los estilos de animación y la calidad de la escritura?
Si te estás preguntando, disfruté de todos los episodios excepto el 1 y el 6. Sin embargo, dado que las expectativas eran muy altas, me sentí un poco decepcionado con la nueva temporada. Esperaba algo incluso mejor que la temporada 1 y esto no solo fue más corto en el número de episodios, sino que también tuvo menos creatividad que antes. No obstante, este programa sigue siendo una de las mejores series animadas que existen.
La animación fue variada que es lo que esperaba porque lo mismo sucedió en la temporada 1. Tiendo a preferir animaciones realistas pero también puedo apreciar estilos más artísticos, por ejemplo, el episodio 2 y el episodio 5 tienen animación artística y no realista y esto funciona genial en ambos casos.
La escritura fue aceptable, pero me gustaría haber visto algunos giros geniales en algunas de las historias. En la primera temporada, el episodio llamado Beyond the Aquila Rift tuvo uno de los mejores giros de ciencia ficción que he visto. Esta temporada no tiene nada parecido a eso.
Reflexiones finales
Love, Death & Robots sigue siendo un buen show, pero la segunda temporada está lejos de ser tan buena como la primera. No solo hay menos episodios, sino que tampoco son tan creativos e intrigantes como los de la temporada 1. Sin embargo, vale la pena ver la temporada 2 si sueles disfrutar de la ciencia ficción animada.
Vale la pena ver esta temporada, pero sería bueno ajustar las expectativas. Si estás buscando más antologías animadas, recomendaría ver Animatrix, que tiene varias historias que tienen lugar en el mundo de Matrix, y también hay una película de antología japonesa animada de 1995 llamada Memories que tiene 3 historias pero solo disfruté la que se llama Magnetic Rose.
