This is a series I have been waiting to watch for quite some time ever since I started to notice it was being well received by the general public. Nowadays I don't watch many comedy series or movies but I have always liked them, and if a good one comes up I am happy to give it a watch.

Unlike many of the series I have recently watched, this one has episodes that only last around 30 minutes, so even before starting to watch it I was thinking this production might be similar to some of the comedy series I watched many years ago such as Friends or Two and a Half Men, however, this one doesn't have the laughing tracks constantly firing in the background, and honestly, it wasn't actually very funny so those tracks would have been unjustified.

Nevertheless, even though I consider this series to be a decent production as I explain below, I was really expecting something much funnier and enjoyable.

What was the series about?

The series follows a group of 3 characters who live in the same building and all of them happen to be fans of a certain crime podcast. At the beginning of the series, they don't actually know each other but by simple chance, they have a first contact in the elevator, and shortly after that, the entire building needs to be evacuated because a horrible thing happened in one of the apartments, one of the tenants was found dead.

Since the beginning of the show, these 3 characters are sure the tenant was murdered, probably by a person living in the building. Given the fact they love crime stories and that their own lives are at risk of this potential killer in the building, they decide they need to investigate what actually happened, so they can ultimately uncover the truth. This is typically what the police should be doing but they ruled this death as a suicide and they aren't even looking for a potential murderer. So, it is up to these 3 characters to find the clues that could point towards a suspect.

The interaction between the 3 main characters sometimes felt strange, the 2 old characters constantly act in a very goofy manner while the young woman is actually the more serious and rational of the group. The comedy they used while interacting with each other wasn't very effective in my opinion, and it sometimes even felt like outdated comedic strategies.

The 3 of them will take huge risks investigating this death since the beginning of the show, it would be fair to say they take several irrational decisions along the way due to how deep they get in what could potentially be a very dangerous rabbit hole. However, if there really is a killer on the loose, then they might be in danger either way.

As a way to inform other people about their investigation, they will create their own podcast and this will be a huge drive in their motivation to uncover the true story behind that death.

We will see a lot of twists as the story advances, which was expected since this series also belongs to the mystery genre. Even though they are doing some things that could easily be considered very dangerous, there is no feeling of tension thanks to the comedic nature of the entire show. This isn't a suspense story or anything like that, but rather a murder mystery full of goofiness and silly moments.

They will create their own list of suspects, investigate potential reasons why any of them would want to kill the victim, and they will even manage to directly talk with each of the suspects with the goal of either confirming who is the murderer or discarding any innocent suspect. There will be some fun moments as they investigate the potential crime, and there was certainly some genius in the general writing of the story. The only thing I didn't like was the type of comedy they decided to implement, and comedy was the thing I was expecting the most out of this show.

There will be several charismatic characters and many of the neighbors are well-thought-out characters given their peculiarities and sometimes even weirdness. The fact one of them might be a murderer is kind of disturbing and a good reason to watch this show until the end.

I have to say I was satisfied with how the story was developed, with its twists, revelations, surprises, and ultimately with how the investigation ended in what was the only moment of the show where viewers might feel a tiny bit of tension. It was a good murder mystery, no doubt about that. I only wish their comedic moments were more effective and enjoyable.

Main names associated with the series

The series had 4 directors working in it. The main one was Jamie Babbit who directed 4 episodes and is known for also being the director of Girls, Gilmore Girls, and Silicon Valley. Cherien Dabis directed 2 episodes and in the past, she also directed a couple of episodes of Ozark and The Sinner, which are great crime series, among many other shows.

Gillian Robespierre also directed 2 episodes just like Dabis, and her main productions so far are 2 films called Obvious Child and Landline. Finally, the remaining director is Don Scardino who is the most experienced director of the 4 of them and has worked in well-known series in the past like 2 Broke Girls and 30 Rock.

When it comes to the writers, there is something very curious about them because among the 5 that worked in all the 10 episodes, 3 of them are working as a writer for the first time in a regular length production, those 3 are Madeleine George, Stephen Markley, and Ben Philippe. When something like this happens, I usually believe they are close to one of the main experienced writers, and they simply begin to work together to improve their writing skills.

The remaining 2 writers are certainly experienced in the entertainment industry. One of them is John Hoffman, who previously worked in the series Grace and Frankie and Looking. And then, we have the big star of the show, who is not only the most experienced of all the writers but also a very talented actor who played one of the main roles in this show. I am talking about Steve Martin, and if you enjoy the comedy genre, you have most likely seen this actor more than 1 time.

Steve Martin is a person who has a terrific career in the entertainment industry and has participated in countless productions both as a writer and as an actor. Recently, he reduced his writing activity and this series is actually the first time he works in a regular-length production in more than 10 years. He is known for The Pink Panther productions and many other old films such as LA Story and Roxanne. I consider Steve Martin the main creative mind behind this show, due to the fact he both wrote and acted in it.

Martin Short is another very experienced actor who plays one of the 3 main roles in this series. Just like Steve Martin, Short is also extremely experienced in the acting world and has worked in more than 100 different productions throughout his career. Recently he appeared in the film Good People and in a couple of episodes of the series The Morning Show.

Last but not least, there is Selena Gomez, a very popular pop singer and actress. A couple of the most recent productions where she appeared as an actress are The Fundamentals of Caring and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, however, I believe her character in Only Murders in the Building, is her most important acting role so far.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The cast did a regular performance, it was clear they attempted to appear funny and spontaneous with each other but there was something about the entire setup that made me feel like if I was watching an outdated production despite the fact this is actually brand new. The type of comedy they attempted was goofy and silly, and it didn't always work for me.

The scenery was cool, most of the story takes place inside a huge building and there is a decent mystery that is constantly driving the plot forward. I like the basic plot but when they attempted to include comedic elements they inadvertently damaged a bit of the potential in the story. Especially due to the type of comedy they wanted to include.

Final thoughts

Only Murders in the Building can be considered an acceptable production, and one that's easily watchable, but I don't think it provides great comedy. I honestly just found around 1 or 2 scenes of the entire show that were funny, and the constantly goofy performance from Martin Short gets tiresome after a while.

They tried to mix the mystery and comedy genres, and the final result has some things that work and others that don't. I enjoyed the mystery, the setting, the twists, and many things in the series, but the comedy, which was supposed to be the main element of this show, wasn't entirely good.

I guess it can be an enjoyable series for many, but have in mind there is a lot of goofiness involving the 2 old characters, and this doesn't always end up being funny. Let me know your thoughts if you have watched this series.

Reflexiones finales

Only Murders in the Building puede considerarse una producción aceptable y fácil de ver, pero no creo que proporcione una gran comedia. Honestamente, encontré alrededor de 1 o 2 escenas de todo el programa que fueron divertidas, y la actuación constantemente tonta de Martin Short se vuelve aburrida después de un tiempo.

Intentaron mezclar los géneros de misterio y comedia, y el resultado final tiene algunas cosas que funcionan y otras que no. Disfruté del misterio, el escenario, los giros y muchas cosas de la serie, pero la comedia, que se suponía que era el elemento principal de este programa, no fue del todo buena.
