I started to watch this series several weeks ago after the release of season 3 and all the praise it started to receive in those days. This is a series that I honestly haven't paid much attention to until now, but I am glad I decided to watch it right after the release of season 3 because I don't have to wait that much time for the next episode.

Corporate drama isn't a topic that really interests me and that's one of the reasons why I ignored this series in the past few years. However, I couldn't ignore the fact that everyone seemed to love this series, and negative critics were almost impossible to find. Therefore, I figured that now it was a great time to give it a watch and see if I liked it.

Since this is a type of drama very different from the ones I am used to watching, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the first season of this show. It was awesome, and I could see now why this series was causing so much buzz. By the end of that season, it was clear this show has won me over and I knew I would end up watching the remaining seasons in the weeks to come.

Key characters in the story.

I will proceed and share a brief overview of the key characters and what state they are in since season 1 ending. From this point on, I will be mentioning a few spoilers from season 1, not from season 2.

Logan Roy is played by Brian Cox. This character is the patriarch and a very authoritative and imposing old man. He knows every dirty little trick there is in the books to advance his corporate and personal interests, and the entire series is about the challenges of finding a person to eventually replace him as the leader of the corporation. He will have to face betrayals but being the old dog that he is, he knows how to survive them.

Jeremy Strong plays the second oldest son, Kendall Roy. At the beginning of the series, it was very clear this was the sibling with the highest chances of becoming the new leader of the corporation. However, his inability to wait caused him to try to speed things up, and eventually, due to his personal instability and unhealthy habits, he will find himself in a very difficult and dangerous circumstance where only his father can help him. This was a very humbling experience for him, and that's why he is much more passive and submissive in season 2.

Kieran Culkin plays Roman Roy, the youngest male of the siblings and certainly the most immature of all of them. This character is used to living a life with no worries and responsibilities, but as he gets involved in the company, he will slowly prove he has good instincts when it comes to negotiations and trends. This probably results from his street smartness and his experience interacting with all sorts of people in his personal life.

Sarah Snook plays Shib Roy, the only female of the siblings. In season 1 she worked as a political advisor and it seemed like politics was really where her passion was. She has a husband that works in the company and has an important role, but is nowhere near becoming the new leader of the company. In season 2, there will be important changes related to the Shib Roy character.

Empecé a ver esta serie hace varias semanas tras el estreno de la tercera temporada y todos los elogios que empezó a recibir en esos días. Es una serie a la que sinceramente no le había prestado mucha atención hasta ahora, pero me alegro de haberme decidido a verla justo después del estreno de la tercera temporada porque no tengo que esperar tanto tiempo para el siguiente episodio.

El drama corporativo no es un tema que realmente me interese y esa es una de las razones por las que ignoré esta serie en los últimos años. Sin embargo, no podía ignorar el hecho de que todo el mundo parecía amar esta serie, y las críticas negativas eran casi imposibles de encontrar. Por lo tanto, pensé que ahora era un gran momento para darle un vistazo y ver si me gustaba.

Dado que este es un tipo de drama muy diferente a los que estoy acostumbrado a ver, me sorprendió lo mucho que disfruté de la primera temporada de esta serie. Logan Roy es interpretado por Brian Cox. Este personaje es el patriarca y un anciano muy autoritario e imponente. Conoce todos los trucos sucios que hay en los libros para avanzar en sus intereses corporativos y personales, y toda la serie gira en torno a los desafíos de encontrar una persona que eventualmente lo reemplace como líder de la corporación. Kieran Culkin interpreta a Roman Roy, el varón más joven de los hermanos y sin duda el más inmaduro de todos ellos. Este personaje está acostumbrado a vivir una vida sin preocupaciones ni responsabilidades, pero a medida que se involucra en la empresa, poco a poco demostrará que tiene buen instinto a la hora de negociar y ver tendencias. Esto probablemente sea el resultado de su inteligencia callejera y de su experiencia interactuando con todo tipo de personas en su vida personal.

Sarah Snook interpreta a Shib Roy, la única mujer de los hermanos. En la primera temporada trabajó como asesora política y parecía que la política era realmente su pasión. Tiene un marido que trabaja en la empresa y tiene un papel importante, pero no está cerca de convertirse en el nuevo líder de la empresa. Finally, I would also like to mention a cool character that has been increasing in importance as the story advances. I am talking about Greg Hirsch played by Nicholas Braun. Greg is the grand nephew of the patriarch, and in season 1 he pretty much begs to receive some kind of job at the corporation. He gets the job and not only that, he will eventually become more and more important. He seems to be an innocent person, but being surrounded by snakes will influence him a little bit, and he will learn how to take proper protection measures in order to prevent him from suffering important damage from anyone. This is probably the only character that could be considered likable and nice in the entire show.

What was season 2 about?

First I would like to repeat the reminder that I will mention spoilers about season 1, not season 2.

Season 1 ends with a power move from the patriarch that completely destroys Kendall's plans to take over the company. The power move was only possible due to a very silly and tragic mistake from Kendall that puts his security and future at risk, but everything gets solved thanks to his dad. However, this help from the dad requires him to leave dump his plans to take over and replace him as the leader of the corporation.

This is a huge blow for Kendall and ends up affecting him very much. Kendall began season 1 as the main sibling, but in season 2 he assumes a lesser role.

There will be several challenges the family will have to face in this season, and they are all continuation of events from season 1. The disturbing cruise topic will be blown up in the second half of the season, and the consequences of this will be fully explored in season 3 I guess, but they are huge and unpredictable. I think pretty much everything can happen, and this has been the biggest challenge for them so far.

Kendall's failed plan to take over will also have consequences, and Roy's maneuvers related to this topic will be shown in the first half of the season, which will be full of several negotiations and corporate politics chess plays.

Everyone surrounding the patriarch has the desire of becoming the new leader of the corporation once he retires, and most people will usually have ulterior motives for everything they do. Betrayals and lies happen left and right all throughout the show, and this will probably keep going until the show's very end.

There will also be some black humor just like in season 1. Many of the scenes with the character Greg Hirsch has some type of humor involved and that's one of the reasons I consider this character the only one with chances of being considered likable by the audience.

Por último, también me gustaría mencionar a un personaje genial que ha ido aumentando su importancia a medida que avanza la historia. Me refiero a Greg Hirsch, interpretado por Nicholas Braun. Greg es el sobrino nieto del patriarca, y en la primera temporada prácticamente suplica que le den algún tipo de trabajo en la corporación. Consigue el trabajo y no sólo eso, sino que con el tiempo se volverá más y más importante. Parece una persona inocente, pero el hecho de estar rodeado de serpientes le influirá un poco, y aprenderá a tomar medidas de protección adecuadas para evitar que sufra daños importantes por parte de cualquiera. Este es probablemente el único personaje que podría considerarse simpático y agradable en toda la serie.

¿De qué trataba la segunda temporada?

Primero me gustaría repetir el recordatorio de que mencionaré spoilers sobre la temporada 1, no sobre la 2.

La temporada 1 termina con un movimiento de poder del patriarca que destruye por completo los planes de Kendall para hacerse con la empresa. El movimiento de poder sólo fue posible gracias a un error muy tonto y trágico de Kendall que pone en riesgo su seguridad y su futuro, pero todo se soluciona gracias a su papá. Sin embargo, esta ayuda del papá le obliga a dejar tirados sus planes para hacerse con el poder y sustituirlo como líder de la corporación.

Esto es un gran golpe para Kendall y acaba afectándole mucho. Kendall comenzó la primera temporada como el hermano principal, pero en la segunda asume un papel menor.

Serán varios los retos a los que la familia tendrá que enfrentarse en esta temporada, y todos ellos son continuación de los acontecimientos de la temporada 1. El inquietante tema de los cruceros saltará por los aires en la segunda mitad de la temporada, y las consecuencias de esto se explorarán por completo supongo que en la tercera temporada, y son enormes e imprevisibles. Creo que prácticamente todo puede pasar, y este ha sido el mayor reto para ellos hasta ahora.

El plan fallido de Kendall para hacerse con el control también tendrá consecuencias, y las maniobras de Roy relacionadas con este tema se mostrarán en la primera mitad de la temporada, que estará llena de varias negociaciones y jugadas de ajedrez de política corporativa.

Todos los que rodean al patriarca tienen el deseo de convertirse en el nuevo líder de la corporación una vez que él se retire, y la mayoría de las personas suelen tener motivos ocultos para todo lo que hacen. Las traiciones y las mentiras suceden a diestro y siniestro a lo largo de toda la serie, y es probable que esto se mantenga hasta el final de la misma.

También habrá algo de humor negro al igual que en la primera temporada. Muchas de las escenas con el personaje Greg Hirsch tienen algún tipo de humor involucrado y esa es una de las razones por las que considero que este personaje es el único con posibilidades de ser considerado simpático por la audiencia.

The only thing I will mention about the season's finale is that in season 1 the ending was like putting an imminent fire to rest, this time, the ending was like throwing gasoline at an already huge fire.

How were the performance from the cast, the scenery and the camera work?

The series kept its high performance from the first season, and I really believe this cast is capable of continuing to provide amazing performances until the end. There were only a couple of episodes where I wasn't entirely convinced by the performance of the actress Sarah Snook who plays Shib Roy, the only female of the 4 siblings, and the actor Kieran Culkin, who plays Roman Roy, the younger male of the 4 siblings. During quite a good while they both had a very dismissive and "I-don't give a fuck" attitude, and it ended up looking a bit exaggerated in my opinion.

The scenery was full of luxury and nice places as usual and this was absolutely expected given the fact this family is one of the richest and most powerful ones in America. The camera work was nicely done as well, and I like how they angled the camera during some meetings that made it easier to appreciate the pressure those people are feeling.

Regarding the writing, it might be useful to know this series something jumps across events it considers irrelevant to the plot, and to the lifestyle of the family. For example, there is a very tense meeting in a foreign country where one important character finds himself in a very stressful situation involving ugly people with big guns, but we never see the conversation about the negotiation that took happened in that place. The show only provides some references to what was said later on. Things like this are typical, and I guess necessary because following these characters 24/7 would be impossible.

Final thoughts

Succession has a second season just as good as the first one, and it also had a cliffhanger ending which wasn't entirely frustrating because I know I will be watching season 3 soon enough. I cannot imagine watching that ending and then having to wait 1 year to see what happens next. This is one of the benefits of beginning to watch a show after it has proven to be good over several seasons.

This is a high-quality drama and it is written in such a way that there simply doesn't seem to be an end in sight. Maybe they plan to end it when the patriarch, Logan Roy, finally leaves his corporate chair? I read that season 4 was confirmed and I am getting worried this show might be getting overmilked. So far it has been great though, and as soon as I finish watching season 3 I will be sharing my thoughts about it.

If you are in the mood for a great drama with very despicable characters played by good actors, where everyone is a traitorous snake, with tons of nasty dialogues and bits of black humor, then Succession is a show for you.

Lo único que mencionaré sobre el final de la temporada es que en la temporada 1 el final fue como apagar un fuego inminente, esta vez, el final fue como echar gasolina a un fuego ya enorme.

¿Cómo fue la actuación del reparto, la escenografía y el trabajo de cámara?

La serie mantuvo su alta calidad de la primera temporada, y realmente creo que este elenco es capaz de seguir proporcionando actuaciones increíbles hasta el final. Sólo hubo un par de episodios en los que no me convenció del todo la actuación de la actriz Sarah Snook, que interpreta a Shib Roy, la única mujer de los 4 hermanos, y del actor Kieran Culkin, que interpreta a Roman Roy, el varón más joven de los 4 hermanos. Durante un buen rato ambos tuvieron una actitud muy displicente y de "me importa un carajo", y terminó pareciendo un poco exagerada en mi opinión.

Los escenarios estaban llenos de lujo y lugares bonitos como siempre y esto era absolutamente esperado dado el hecho de que esta familia es una de las más ricas y poderosas de América. El trabajo de cámara estuvo muy bien hecho también, y me gustó cómo angularon la cámara durante algunas reuniones que hicieron más fácil apreciar la presión que esas personas están sintiendo.

En cuanto a la escritura, podría ser útil saber que esta serie salta a través de eventos que considera irrelevantes para la trama, y para el estilo de vida de la familia. Por ejemplo, hay una reunión muy tensa en un país extranjero donde un personaje importante se encuentra en una situación muy estresante que involucra a gente fea con grandes armas, pero nunca vemos la conversación sobre la negociación que tuvo lugar en ese lugar. El show sólo proporciona algunas referencias a lo que se dijo más tarde. Cosas como esta son típicas, y supongo que necesarias porque seguir a estos personajes las 24 horas del día sería imposible.

Pensamientos finales

Succession tiene una segunda temporada igual de buena que la primera, y además tuvo un final de tipo cliffhanger que no fue del todo frustrante porque sé que pronto veré la tercera temporada. No me imagino ver ese final y luego tener que esperar 1 año para ver lo que pasa después. Esta es una de las ventajas de empezar a ver una serie después de que haya demostrado ser buena durante varias temporadas.

Este es un drama de alta calidad y está escrito de tal manera que simplemente no parece haber un final a la vista. Tal vez planean terminarlo cuando el patriarca, Logan Roy, finalmente deje su silla corporativa? He leído que se ha confirmado la cuarta temporada y me preocupa que esta serie se esté sobre extendiendo. Sin embargo, hasta ahora ha sido genial, y en cuanto termine de ver la tercera temporada compartiré mis opiniones al respecto.
