Gosford Park | A slow drama with little substance

Review by @dedicatedguy · 2387d · of Gosford Park

After I watched the awesome movie called Images I decided to check some of the other works of the director and I hoped they were as good as I expected. Gosford Park is a movie about a rich family, their wealthy friends and the live-in servants that attend to them. The most important part of the plot is a murder that happens inside the house which causes havoc among the people.

One of the things I didn't like about this movie, is that the murder takes a lot of time to happen, there was a point I was simply waiting for it to happen in order to add a little spice to the story because, honestly, more than the first half of the movie was pretty boring for me. It is not that I don't enjoy old drama movies, I have enjoyed excellent ones like The Remains of the Day with Hopkins giving his best as a butler.

Gosford Park, on the other hand, is a very slow movie with only 1 intriguing character in the entire story, one who didn't seem like he belonged there, although this doesn't advance or improve the plot because the reason why this person was present is a little bit silly.

The cast has several well-known actors and actresses, but my problem with this movie is that the story didn't have too much intrigue, there were too many characters for the viewer to care about them (including the victim of the murder), the twist is not that mind-blowing, there are no intrigue nor excitement and the mystery is very bland.

This movie certainly wasn't for me, which is a shame because I was expecting a cool story with a lot of intrigue and an interesting plot. I am sure there are people that could enjoy this movie if they like drama, but in my case, I didn't enjoy it. Too boring for my taste. Even for drama fans, there are much better movies in my opinion.

The best

  • Good individual actors but not enough to make the movie interesting.

The worst

  • Boring plot
  • Bland twist
  • Good looking setting

I remember watching this one in cinema and not liking it too much. Did you know that it's close to being a remake of a better and way older movie "La Regle du Jeu ( Rules of the Game, 1939 ) directed by Jean Renoir ( son of the famous painter ).

I liked Images a lot but what is probably my favorite movie by Altman is 'The Player' starring a young Tim Robbins as a big guy in Hollywood. It's an amazing movie about filmmaking. Would love to give it another watch. If you haven't seen it already, go give it a watch. I think it won't disappoint you.

Adios or, as we say here, Adeus!

I like this movie (although it is slow), but I think its ending very pretentious.
