Gosford Park

En la campiña inglesa, durante una mañana lluviosa de 1932, la condesa de Trentham sale de su mansión y se mete en su automóvil en compañía de su doncella, Mary Macceachran, una joven a quien la mujer "entrena" en el campo de la servidumbre personalizada para ahorrarse dinero en contratar a alguien más experimentada.

Durante el camino, se cruzan con Ivor Novello, famoso actor y cantante, y el productor de cine Morris Weissman, quienes se ofrecieron a ayudarlas al ver el vehículo varado en medio del camino; sin embargo, la ayuda es en cierto modo gentilmente rechazada debido a que el motivo no era otro que la incapacidad de la condesa de Trentham de abrir un termo.

Al final, ambos automóviles llegan al destino en común: Gosford Park, propiedad del baronet y empresario sir William McCordle y la esposa de éste, lady Sylvia. Tras ellos llegan lord Raymond Stockbridge y su esposa Louisa; el comandante Anthony Meredith y su esposa Lavinia; Freddie Nessbit y su esposa Mabel. Cada pareja, a excepción de los Nesbitt, llevan consigo a sus propios criados, quienes se instalan en los sótanos de la casa y comparten habitaciones del servicio propio de la casa. Más tarde llegarían lord Rupert Standish, pretendiente de la hija de sir William, Isobel, junto con su amigo Jeremy Blond.

Lo que se suponía un fin de semana enfocada en la cacería, cenas interminables, intervenciones musicales del señor Novello, y algunas que otras correrías nocturnas se convertiría pronto fue sustituido por el asesinato de sir William, dando rienda suelta a una serie de investigaciones de la mano de Thompson (Stephen Fry), un inspector que no evita que le estén interrumpiendo cada cinco minutos por todo el mundo, cuyas conclusiones quizás queden al aire... ¿O no?

Gosford Park es un filme de 2001 dirigida por Robert Altman y protagonizada por un elenco extraordinario que incluye a Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, Stephen Fry, Clive Owen, Charles Dance, Emily Watson, Michael Gambon, entre otros artistas de renombre.

Es un filme entretenido de principio a fin, con actuaciones magistrales y un soundtrack que nos transporta a la época en la que se desarrollan los hechos. Los personajes, variopintos en personalidad y en presentación, tienen historias, secretos que ocultar, lo que enriquece mucho la narrativa de la película.

Un aspecto que hay que puntualizar sobre esta película es la interesante mezcla de relatos que ofrecen un reflejo interior sobre la relación entre la clase aristocrática y sus sirvientes; dicha relación muchas veces son una mezcla entre lo sutil y lo abusivo, salvo algunas excepciones, como es el caso de sir William. Este personaje (Michael Gambon) tiene un historia de abuso de poder que se remonta a los períodos de la Primera Guerra Mundial; muchas fueron las empleadas de sus fábricas que en cierto modo habían sido seducidas por él, quedando embarazadas y teniendo que elegir entre perder sus trabajos al conservar a sus hijos o darlos en adopción.

Este relato en particular era narrado de forma abierta por la jefa de cocina, la señora Croft (Eileen Atkins), cuando una de las cocineras le preguntó por qué alguien querría matar a sir William. "Era un hombre infeliz y malvado", concluía la señora Croft con amargura y franqueza.

Una escena que le otorga una particular fuerza a este aspecto oscuro de sir William es cuando la señora Wilson (Helen Mirren) entra a la biblioteca con una taza de café. Sir William, enfocado en la pieza de una de sus armas, rechaza de forma grosera el ofrecimiento de la señora Wilson al arrojarle la taza al suelo. "Déjelo. Quiero whisky", exige. La señora Wilson obedece y le entrega un whisky cargado.

Si nos ponemos a observar con atención el comportamiento de sir William, se podría decir que varios de los invitados tienen motivos suficientes para eliminarlo, desde el comandante Meredith (Tom Hollander), a quien le dio un esquinazo luego de proponerle una oportunidad de negocio, hasta la propia condesa de Trentham (Maggie Smith), a quien sir William decidió retirar su pensión.

Sobre quién pudo haber cometido el crimen es un secreto sellado entre dos personajes al final del filme.

Dato curioso: Ivor Novello es el único personaje de la película que existió en la vida real. Fue uno de los artistas más populares del Reino Unido de principios del siglo XX.

In the English countryside, during a rainy morning in 1932, the Countess of Trentham leaves her mansion and gets into her car in the company of her maid, Mary Macceachran, a young woman whom she “trains” in the field of personalized servitude to save money on hiring someone more experienced.

During the way, they cross with Ivor Novello, a famous actor and singer, and the film productor Morris Weissman, who offer to help them when they see the vehicle stranded in the middle of the road; however, the help is somewhat gently refused because the reason is none other than the Countess of Trentham's inability to open a bottle.

At the end, both cars arrive at their common destination: Gosford Park, property of the baronet and businessman Sir William McCordle and his wife, Lady Sylvia. Behind them arrive Lord Raymond Stockbridge and his wife Louisa; Commander Anthony Meredith and his wife Lavinia; Freddie Nessbit and his wife Mabel. Each couple, with the exception of the Nesbitts, bring with them their own servants, who take up residence in the cellars of the house and share rooms of the house's own service. Later Lord Rupert Standish, suitor of Sir William's daughter, Isobel, would arrive with his friend Jeremy Blond.

What was supposed to be a weekend focused in hunting, endless dinners, musical interventions by Mr. Novello, and a few other nocturnal escapades would soon be replaced by the murder of Sir William, unleashing a series of investigations by Thompson (Stephen Fry), an inspector who doesn't avoid being interrupted every five minutes by everyone, whose conclusions may be left up in the air... Or not?

Gosford Park is a 2001 film directed by Robert Altman and starred by an extraordinary cast that includes Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Derek Jacobi, Stephen Fry, Clive Owen, Charles Dance, Emily Watson, Michael Gambon, among other known artists.

It is an entertaining film from beginning to end, with masterful performances and a soundtrack that transports us to the era in which the events take place. The characters, diverse in personality and presentation, have stories and secrets to hide, which greatly enriches the film's narrative.

One aspect to point out about this film is the interesting mix of stories that offer an inner reflection on the relationship between the aristocratic class and their servants; this relationship is often a mixture of the subtle and the abusive, with a few exceptions, as the case of Sir William. This character (Michael Gambon) has a history of abuse of power that goes back to the periods of the First World War; many were the employees of his factories that, in a certain way, had been seduced by him, becoming pregnant and having to choose between losing their jobs by keeping their children or giving them up for adoption.

This story particularly is openly told by the head cook, Mrs. Croft (Eileen Atkins), when one of the cooks asked her why someone would want to kill sir William. "He was a hard-hearted randy old sod", Mrs. Croft concluded with bitterness and frankness.

One scene that lends particular force to this dark aspect of Sir William is when Mrs. Wilson (Helen Mirren) enters the library with a cup of coffee. Sir William, focused on the piece of one of his guns, rudely rejects Mrs. Wilson's offer by throwing the cup on the floor at her. “Leave it. I want whiskey,” he demands. Mrs. Wilson complies and hands him a loaded whiskey.

If we take a closer look at Sir William's behavior, it could be said that several of the guests have sufficient motive to eliminate him, from Major Meredith (Tom Hollander), whom he gave him the slip after proposing a business opportunity, to the Countess of Trentham herself (Maggie Smith), whom Sir William decided to withdraw his pension.

Who may have committed the crime is a secret sealed between two characters at the end of the film.

Curious fact; Ivor Novello is the only character of the film who existed in real life. He was one of the most popular artists in UK at the beginnings of the 20th century.
