Love, Death & Robots season 3 (7.5/10) - The best animated anthology of recent years is back. [ENG + ESP]

This series when it was first released a few years ago in 2019, came as a total surprise for me. It was released during a time when anthologies were getting super popular, probably thanks to Black Mirror, and this show was regarded in its first season as the animated equivalent of Black Mirror because many of its stories belonged to the scifi genre and because of the fact it was an anthology per episode.

The show quickly gained a lot of fans, that first season had a total of 18 episodes, and they were all very varied. Not only the stories were audacious and very original, but the animation was also varied and nice to watch.

Then, came the second season, with fewer episodes, less memorable moments, and a general reduction in the quality of the show. I didn't understand why they decided to reduce the number of episodes, something that made many people love this show was because of the variety it provided, and with fewer episodes, there is naturally less variety. The second season had its moments but it was nowhere near as good as the first one.

I was intrigued about this third season because I thought the creators learned their lessons in season 2 and were now releasing a new batch of episodes that could compete with those from the first season. However, after having watched them all, I can confirm the first season continues to be the best one.

This season only had 9 episodes, only half the number of episodes from season 1 and 1 more than season 2. Given the fact all of these episodes are very different from each other, I figured the best way to share my opinion was to talk a little bit about all of them.

Esta serie cuando se lanzó por primera vez hace unos años en 2019, fue una sorpresa total para mí. Fue lanzada durante un momento en que las antologías se estaban volviendo súper populares, probablemente gracias a Black Mirror, y este programa fue considerado en su primera temporada como el equivalente animado de Black Mirror porque muchas de sus historias pertenecían al género de ciencia ficción y por el hecho de que era una antología por episodio.

El programa ganó rápidamente muchos fanáticos, esa primera temporada tuvo un total de 18 episodios, y todos fueron muy variados. No solo las historias eran audaces y muy originales, sino que la animación también era variada y disfrutable de ver.

Luego, llegó la segunda temporada, con menos episodios, menos momentos memorables y una reducción general en la calidad del programa. No entendí por qué decidieron reducir el número de episodios, algo que hizo que a muchas personas les encantara este programa fue debido a la variedad que proporcionaba, y con menos episodios, naturalmente hay menos variedad. La segunda temporada tuvo sus momentos, pero no fue tan buena como la primera.

Estaba intrigado sobre esta tercera temporada porque pensé que los creadores habían aprendido sus lecciones en la temporada 2 y ahora estaban lanzando un nuevo lote de episodios que podrían competir con los de la primera temporada. Sin embargo, después de haberlos visto todos, puedo confirmar que la primera temporada sigue siendo la mejor.

Esta temporada solo tuvo 9 episodios, solo la mitad del número de episodios de la temporada 1 y 1 episodio más que la temporada 2. Dado el hecho de que todos estos episodios son muy diferentes entre sí, pensé que la mejor manera de compartir mi opinión era hablar un poco sobre todos ellos.

Episode 1 brings back some of the most beloved characters of season 1, the 3 robots who are exploring parts of our civilization after we went extinct. These are 3 charismatic robots who have friendly chats among them as they walk together in many different places. Their occurrences and jokes is what made many viewers love their conversations and their episodes are among those that belong to the scifi and comedy genres.

I have to say these characters, even though they can be enjoyable aren't among my favorites of the show. I can easily tolerate them but none of their episodes are among my favorite ones. I will share my favorite episodes of the entire show at the end of this post.

El episodio 1 trae de vuelta a algunos de los personajes más queridos de la temporada 1, los 3 robots que están explorando partes de nuestra civilización después de que nos extinguimos. Estos son 3 robots carismáticos que tienen charlas amistosas entre ellos mientras caminan juntos en muchos lugares diferentes. Sus ocurrencias y chistes es lo que hizo que muchos espectadores amaran sus conversaciones y sus episodios se encuentran entre los que pertenecen a los géneros de ciencia ficción y comedia.

Tengo que decir que estos personajes, a pesar de que pueden ser agradables, no están entre mis favoritos de la serie. Puedo tolerarlos fácilmente, pero ninguno de sus episodios está entre mis favoritos. Compartiré mis episodios favoritos de todo el programa al final de esta publicación.

Episode 2 was about a massive and scary sea monster that causes massive chaos among the crew of a ship. This episode doesn't seem to take place in the future, and I would categorize it as only belonging to the fantasy genre. The story is about how the crew deals with this new massive problem, and this was one of the episodes with the best animation among those of season 3.

We will see violence, betrayals, a disturbing surprise, and many more things as the members of the crew are on the brink of becoming literally crazy thanks to the presence of this monster.

El episodio 2 trataba sobre un monstruo marino masivo y aterrador que causa un gran caos entre la tripulación de un barco. Este episodio no parece tener lugar en el futuro, y lo clasificaría como perteneciente solo al género fantástico. La historia trata sobre cómo el equipo lidia con este nuevo problema masivo, y este fue uno de los episodios con mejor animación entre los de la temporada 3.

Veremos violencia, traiciones, una sorpresa inquietante sobre la criatura, y muchas cosas más ya que los miembros de la tripulación están a punto de volverse literalmente locos gracias a la presencia de este monstruo.

The third episode was among my favorite ones and this type of story is the reason why I like to see this show. This time, we have an astronaut having an accident on a celestial body and enduring very challenging circumstances that put her life at risk.

However, something completely unexpected will happen, and we are quickly introduced to what I could describe as a type of consciousness never explored before in similar productions. Sufficiently advanced intelligence can manifest itself in many forms, and this episode added s another example to the list. The episode isn't as mind-blowing as the one called Beyond the Aquila Rift from season 1, but I believe there are some similarities in the type of story they explore.

El tercer episodio fue uno de mis favoritos y este tipo de historia es la razón por la que me gusta ver este programa. Esta vez, tenemos a una astronauta que tiene un accidente en un cuerpo celeste y tiene que lidear circunstancias muy desafiantes que ponen en riesgo su vida.

Sin embargo, algo completamente inesperado sucederá, y rápidamente se nos presenta lo que podría describir como un tipo de conciencia nunca antes explorada en producciones similares. La inteligencia suficientemente avanzada puede manifestarse en muchas formas, y este episodio agregó otro ejemplo a la lista. El episodio no es tan alucinante como el llamado Beyond the Aquila Rift de la temporada 1, pero creo que hay algunas similitudes en el tipo de historia que exploran.

Episode 4 was the shortest, it was just about a zombie apocalypse where all the scenes are viewed from above and we can enjoy a better angle of the massive chaos that takes place. This type of episode didn't add much to the show and is one easily forgotten.
El episodio 4 fue el más corto, se trataba de un apocalipsis zombi donde todas las escenas se ven desde arriba y podemos disfrutar de un mejor ángulo del caos masivo que tiene lugar. Este tipo de episodio no agregó mucho al programa y es uno que se olvida fácilmente.

Episode 5 presents us with an action episode where a group of soldiers is tasked with dealing with any threat they may encounter and do whatever it takes to neutralize it. They end up encountering a dangerous beast with an ironic background and in short words, their worst nightmares are about to becoming true.

This episode would have been much more interesting if they used realistic graphics, but it had normal cartoon graphics and this made the many action scenes less intriguing for me. It also had some attempts at funny dialogues but in my opinion, there was nothing funny in this episode.

El episodio 5 nos presenta un episodio de acción en el que un grupo de soldados tiene la tarea de lidiar con cualquier amenaza que puedan encontrar y hacer lo que sea necesario para neutralizarla. Terminan encontrándose con una bestia peligrosa con un trasfondo algo irónico y, en pocas palabras, sus peores pesadillas están a punto de hacerse realidad.

Este episodio habría sido mucho más interesante si usaran gráficos realistas, pero tenía gráficos de dibujos animados normales y esto hizo que las muchas escenas de acción fueran menos intrigantes para mí. También tuvo algunos intentos de diálogos divertidos, pero en mi opinión, no hubo nada gracioso en este episodio.

Episode 6 had very realistic graphics, among the best ones in the history of the show and the story was also very interesting. We have 2 space researchers learning about a very weird alien race that could be of use to the human civilization. This alien race isn't hurting anyone, and their behavior and organization reminded me of ants.

This episode required a lot of creative effort in designing all the environment in the space, and the almost photorealistic graphics made some scenes almost hypnotic. The story has s very important and tragic twist that could even be considered s bit disturbing by some viewers. I liked the episode.

El episodio 6 tenía gráficos muy realistas, entre los mejores de la historia de la serie y la historia también era muy interesante. Tenemos 2 investigadores espaciales aprendiendo sobre una raza alienígena muy extraña que podría ser útil para la civilización humana. Esta raza alienígena no está lastimando a nadie, y su comportamiento y organización me recordaron a las hormigas.

Este episodio requirió mucho esfuerzo creativo en el diseño de todo el entorno en el espacio, y los gráficos casi fotorrealistas hicieron que algunas escenas fueran casi hipnóticas. La historia tiene un giro muy importante y trágico que incluso podría ser considerado un poco inquietante por algunos espectadores. Me gustó el episodio.

Episode 7 was the silliest of the season, even sillier than episode 1. We have a farmer with a massive rat problem, and the entire episode is about the drastic and futuristic measures that are being taken to deal with this problem. It had many funny and WTF moments, and its ending was very absurd.
El episodio 7 fue el más tonto de la temporada, incluso más tonto que el episodio 1. Tenemos un agricultor con un problema masivo de ratas, y todo el episodio trata sobre las medidas drásticas y futuristas que decide tomar para hacer frente a este problema. Tuvo muchos moments WTF algo divertidos y su final fue muy absurdo.

The next episode, the number 8, presents us with a group of normal modern soldiers, who aren't equipped to deal with the threat they are about to discover. These are normal soldiers dealing with something that far outweighs the capability of any person in existence. They have no idea what they are about to discover and the episodes left me with a deep sense of intrigue because I wanted to know more about the strange and inexplicable thing they discovered. Hopefully, this story can be explored further in a future season.
El siguiente episodio, el número 8, nos presenta a un grupo de soldados modernos normales, que no están equipados para hacer frente a la amenaza que están a punto de descubrir. Estos son soldados normales que se ocupan de algo que supera con creces la capacidad de cualquier persona en existencia. No tienen idea de lo que están a punto de descubrir y el episodio me dejó con una profunda sensación de intriga porque quería saber más sobre la cosa extraña e inexplicable que descubrieron. Con suerte, esta historia se puede explorar más a fondo en una temporada futura.

Finally, we have episode 9, a story without any dialogues but with absolutely beautiful graphics. There is a strange being, a siren, that lives in the water and somehow owns many beautiful jewels, and her scream has a big influence on the humans near her. Unlike many of the previous episodes, this one really requires the viewer to pay attention to properly appreciate the depth of its story. It isn't only about the siren dealing with what she considers a threat to her, but it also tries to deliver a message to the viewer through the actions taken by the main character and the corresponding consequences.

Oh an I almost forgot, at the beginning of the article, I mentioned I would share my favorites episodes of all the seasons so these are my top 6 episodes so far:

Beyond the Aquila Rift, from season 1. Zima Blue, from season 1. Sonnies' Edge, from season 1. Snow in the Desert, from season 2. The Very Pulse of the Machine, from season 3. Jibaro, from season 3.

Final thoughts

This season provided a few episodes that were certainly worth watching but I am sad to say the majority of them left much to be desired. The series is still good, and different episodes will satisfy different tastes, but I feel like the show isnçt reaching its potential because it could give so much more.

Por último, tenemos el episodio 9, una historia sin diálogos pero con unos gráficos absolutamente bonitos. Hay un ser extraño, una sirena, que vive en el agua y de alguna manera posee muchas joyas hermosas, y su grito tiene una gran influencia en los humanos cerca de ella. A diferencia de muchos de los episodios anteriores, este realmente requiere que el espectador preste atención para apreciar adecuadamente la profundidad de su historia. No se trata solo de que la sirena se ocupe de lo que ella considera una amenaza, sino que también trata de entregar un mensaje al espectador a través de las acciones tomadas por el personaje principal y las consecuencias correspondientes.

Oh y casi lo olvido, al principio del artículo, mencioné que compartiría mis episodios favoritos de todas las temporadas, así que estos son mis 6 mejores episodios hasta ahora:

Reflexiones finales

Esta temporada proporcionó algunos episodios que ciertamente valieron la pena ver, pero me entristece decir que la mayoría de ellos dejaron mucho que desear. La serie sigue siendo buena, y los diferentes episodios satisfarán diferentes gustos, pero siento que el programa no está alcanzando su potencial porque podría dar mucho más.

    I've always wanted to see Love Deaths $ Robots for a while now but I hardly get the time to watch these shows. Your review is the kick in the behind I have always needed to finally get started on this. I never knew it was an anthology series and I'm a fan of wonderful works like this. This is my second time reading a review written by you and I really love how you use your words to convince me to check out the shows you write about. Thanks mate

    Wow so this series has been going on since 2019 and I just heard about it this year. I have heard a lot of people talk about this series and how good it is. I googled it about a week ago and that was even when I knew it was an anthology. I’m a huge fan of animations and with the hype, of course I put this series high in my list of “Series to watch”.

    It sounds like you really liked the first season of this show and it just starts to get disappointing with the fewer episodes. Oh well, some shows are like that. I don’t know if the producers try to make us want more with this tactic but really it’s annoying.

    I think the only anthology series I have seen are What If and The Boys Presents : Diabolical.

    Speaking of which, you’re a The Boys fan right? You know the third season is going to premiere in a few days. Are you excited??😎

    Concuerdo que el episodio 6 estuvo genial. El episodio 7 no sé porqué te pareció que tuvo un final tonto jjj. En lo personal me gustó ese giro que tuvo la historia, me resultó conmovedor y algo justo para los ratoncitos. Desde que empece a ver la serie me ha gustado. Hay cosas que me dejarón pensando. Pero cada quien tiene sus críticas y su forma de ver. A mi resulta difícil dar críticas porque cuando veo algo es porque en verdad me gusta, de no cumplir mis expectativas lo termino dejando.

    Este tipo de episodio no agregó mucho al programa y es uno que se olvida fácilmente.

    Ese fue el que a mi mas me gusto me pareció muy divertido no hay ni un dialogo solo caos y destrucción de una manera ilarante, aunque yo voy por el capitulo 5 , también me gusto el del barco pero el final se sintió un poco que le falto el plot pero tuvo buena calidad, creo que lo que dices es verdad esta temporada no esta buena como las pasadas , pero es mejor que nada.

    por cierto veo en tus reviews anteriores que le das un 8 a shingeki fácilmente el mejor anime de todos los tiempos , y luego 8.5 a Batman una película en donde el villano pasa mas de media película en la cárcel haciendo nada y sin ser un peligro , me parece interesante como nosotros los cinefilos tenemos gustos diferentes eso le da mucho sabor a este mundo , gracias por compartir y feliz dia
