This is a Japanese anime series with a very futuristic take where they have developed the technology to instantly assess if a person is a potential criminal or just a peaceful citizen. The Sibyl system, which is the name they give to this powerful tool, is so precise in its assessments that the police weapons can only shoot if the person they're pointing the weapon at is a potential criminal.

Innocent until proven guilty is of no use in this futuristic and potentially dystopic Japanese society. What the Sibyl system says goes and it might not be such a perfect and exemplary system as most people believe. The system uses a crime coefficient which is displayed as a number and above a certain threshold, the person will have problems even if they haven't committed anything wrong.

The series is about a team of detectives and their subordinates who are called executors. These executors are potential criminals that are allowed to live mostly as normal humans just because they work with the police and do the dirty work for them.

The crime coefficient isn't like the IQ that pretty much stays the same throughout the person's life. The crime coefficient can change if the person goes through very traumatic experiences. If the effects of the traumas are too much, the person has the risk of being permanently considered a potential criminal for life.

Every villain in the first season is a murderer but the main one is a very special person. Incredibly smart, ideologically against the control of the Sibyl System, and willing to combine all of his skills to bring it all down. He might have good reasons to be against the Sibyl system but his methods are maybe too radical.

If you enjoy scifi anime with a cyberpunk touch this would be an excellent watch. The universe has a lot of content to offer there are several seasons already produced as well as some movies so I expect a lot of ramifications to be explored. The season has several surprises and twists and the biggest one will be to see what is exactly the Sibyl system and how it was created. This is a very promising show and I will begin watching season 2 soon enough.

The best

  • Very interesting concept even though it might be far fetched and sometimes impractical.
  • The setting provides room for many more stories and I am looking forward to seeing season 2.

The worst

  • The weapons were too slow to release the trigger which could be risky for the police and executors.
  • The true face of the Sibyl system looked very impractical. The creators tried to make it look like a sophisticated place but with so many moving parts it looked as if something was about to break at any given time.
