Film & TV Friday: Bye, Roseanne

Review by @didic · 2952d · of Roseanne

The biggest entertainment news of the week was undoubtedly the cancellation of Roseanne. The show, and also kinda the person, following her super racist tweet. Also, movies and tv show exist. Let's talk about it.

The News

Cancelled

I gotta admit, it's kinda surreal that ABC cancelled the "Roseanne" revival. Not because it wasn't the right choice, but because this is who she's been for the last several years. She tweeted awful racist stuff in the past, and she'll do it again. I have no earthly idea what made them think she wouldn't do it with a successful show on the air. I feel bad for the rest of the cast and crew, and hope they all find gainful employment.

Bee In Her Bonnet

I will have more on the Sam Bee use of the C word, and her apology, on Feminism Sunday, but I didn't want to ignore it here just because I am an admitted stan of hers. Shortest version of Sunday's post: the difference between Bee and Barr is kicking up vs. kicking down.

Wide Release Films Opening This Weekend:

Film # of Theaters
Adrift 3,015
Action Point 2,032
Upgrade 1,457

Well, this weekend certainly looks like they thought Solo would be doing much better, huh? Adrift seems boring, Upgrade has no star power, and Action Point just looks utterly awful. Like, watching commercials for it is actively hurting my brain.

TV Show Premieres This Week

Show Season Country Network or Service Day Time
Pose 1 US FX Sunday 9:00PM EST
Succession 1 US HBO Sunday 10:00PM EST
Five Points 1 US Facebook Monday 12:00PMEST
Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler 1 US AMC Monday 11:00PM EST
Face Off 13 US Syfy Tuesday 9:00PM EST
Humans 3 US AMC Tuesday 10:00PM EST
Younger 5 US TV Land Tuesday 10:00PM EST
Cloak & Dagger 1 US Freeform Thursday 8:00PM EST

Ryan Murphy fans should take note of Pose. Yes, there is a show here that airs on Facebook. Specifically, Facebook Watch, their TV service that doesn't work here. But I'm mostly here for Cloak and Dagger, the new YA Marvel series.

Trailers

Ocean's 8

It is impossible for me to overstate how here I am for this movie. I REALLY hope it's as good as the trailers have made it look.

Peppermint

Well, then! This trailer certainly is a journey, isn't it? Starts out looking like a depressing family drama (I guessed the kid would get sick), and then it looks like it may be a boring legal thing. But then! Ha! All of that was just prologue to Jennifer Garner kicking ALL THE ASS. I hope the first minute of the movie is literally the first minute of this trailer.

Night School

This continues to look amusing, and will probably do well. The cast has some the funniest people around.

Rewatching One Day at a Time on Netflix in honor of Roseanne getting cancelled. It's a much better culture-consciousness sitcom. :)
