See you Space Cowboy... Cowboy Bebop (1998).- ENG/ESP.

Greetings, friends of Hive! I'm sure many in the community enjoy anime, so you probably know what I'm talking about. Cowboy Bebop came to me thanks to a college friend who watched anime since she was little, and when I asked her which would be the first one I could watch (since I hadn't watched anime before), she very excitedly told me about this one... I must say it was a very good first choice that without her advice I wouldn't have taken.

Cowboy Bebop llegó a mí gracias a una amiga de la universidad que veía animes desde pequeña, y al preguntarle cuál sería el primero que podía ver (ya que no había visto anime antes), muy emocionada me habló de este… Debo decir que fue una muy buena primera elección que sin su asesoría no habría tomado.

Cowboy Bebop is a sci-fi anime that follows the lives of bounty hunters Spike and Jet Black, who are dedicated to capturing criminals to make money, and travel aboard the ship Bebop. They are later joined by Faye Valentine, Ed and a genius corgi puppy named Ein. Between them they are all characters with such distinctive personalities that it is such a peculiar scenario to have to see them living together, but the skills of each and their life stories lead them to come together and accompany each other in the trade of bounty hunters. Despite being of Japanese origin, it takes many western and western genre references, taking the idea of the old cowboy movies that duel with their enemies in a raw way.

Cowboy Bebop es un anime de ciencia ficción que sigue las vidas de los caza-recompensas Spike y Jet Black, que se dedican a capturar criminales para ganar dinero, y viajan a bordo de la nave Bebop. A ellos se les une posteriormente Faye Valentine, Ed y un perrito corgi genio llamado Ein. Entre sí todos son personajes con personalidades tan distintivas que es un escenario tan peculiar tener que verlos convivir juntos, pero las habilidades de cada uno y sus historias de vida los llevan a reunirse y acompañarse en el oficio de caza-recompensas. A pesar de ser de origen japonés, toma muchas referencias occidentales y del género western, tomando la idea de las viejas películas de vaqueros que se enfrentan a duelo con sus enemigos de forma cruda.

As the series progresses you might think that the order in which you choose to watch the chapters doesn't matter, as they only show the group involved in different crises that have a resolution at the end of them, with conclusive stories. However, we are soon shown that the animation goes beyond a group of antiheroes with a peculiar way of making money, but we are also shown the hard pasts of the protagonists through flashbacks that in my opinion give much richness to the characters, allows us to understand them better and are developed in such a timely manner to have only 26 chapters to develop the plot.

A medida que transcurre la serie se podría pensar que no importa el orden en el que se decida ver los capítulos, ya que en estos sólo se muestran al grupo envuelto en diferentes crisis que tienen resolución al final de los mismos, con historias concluyentes. Sin embargo pronto se nos muestra que la animación va más allá de un grupo de antihéroes con una forma peculiar de ganar dinero, sino que nos enseñan también los duros pasados de los protagonistas a través de flashbacks que a mi parecer les dan mucha riqueza a los personajes, nos permite comprenderlos mejor y se desarrollan de una manera tan oportuna para contar con sólo 26 capítulos para desarrollar la trama.

Their lives take place in a universe where the earth is so deteriorated that its inhabitants have moved to colonies, which are on planets like Saturn or Venus, and even inhabit asteroids. Despite its futuristic elements and the technological advances that are observed, the city is dirty, messy and full of anarchy. Humans may inhabit new planets, but crime and the lust for power chase them wherever they want, even bounty hunters do not have the noblest purposes when catching criminals. It's a new world with the old ways of survival.

Sus vidas tienen lugar en un universo donde la tierra está tan deteriorada que sus habitantes se han mudados a colonias, que se encuentran en planetas como saturno o venus, e incluso habitan en asteroides. A pesar de sus elementos futuristas y los avances tecnológicos que se observan, la ciudad se muestra sucia, desordenada y llena de anarquía, Los humanos podrán habitar nuevos planetas, pero el crimen y las ansias de poder los persiguen a donde quieran, incluso los caza-recompensas no tienen los fines más nobles al atrapar a los criminales. Es un nuevo mundo con las viejas costumbres de siempre para sobrevivir.

The passengers of the Bebop ship are Jet Black, an ex-cop; Faye Valentine, a woman who is an expert in games and who was cryogenized, so she has forgotten all about her past; Ed, a hacker girl who was raised in an orphanage; and the puppy Ein, with abilities superior to those of a conventional puppy. Of course, the most intriguing story in my opinion is that of Spike, who was once part of a criminal organization called Red Dragon and worked with a partner, Vicious. Their relationship is marked by the appearance of Julia, Spike's great love. Although the anime explores themes such as loneliness, the impossibility of leaving the past behind, and the existential emptiness of having a life broken by life circumstances, it also explores love in a very adult and very dark way.

Los pasajeros de la nave Bebop son Jet Black, un expolicía; Faye Valentine, una mujer experta en juegos y que fue criogenizada, por tanto ha olvidado todo su pasado; Ed, una niña hacker que fue criada en un orfanato y el perrito Ein, con habilidades superiores a las de un perrito convencional. Por supuesto, la historia más intrigante a mi criterio es la de Spike, que una vez fue parte de una organización criminal llamada Dragón Rojo y trabajaba con un compañero, Vicious. La relación de ambos se ve marcada por la aparición de Julia, el gran amor de Spike. Y es que aunque el anime explora temas como la soledad, la imposibilidad de dejar el pasado atrás, y el vacío existencial de tener una vida rota por las circunstancias de la vida, también explora el amor de una forma muy adulta y muy oscura.

The anime also stands out for its soundtrack; this was one of the aspects of the story that caught my attention the most, since the music here is not only used to set the mood of Cowboy Bebop's narrative, but also to tell it. Much credit for this goes to composer Yoko Kanno, who introduced the bebop musical style (the same name the ship is christened with), which is derived from jazz, to this anime. In addition, the chapters are titled as sessions, sometimes named after songs such as Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) or Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen). Cowboy Bebop is one of those productions that you watch and all you can think about is how ahead of its time it was. It is a cultural jewel that sometimes goes unnoticed but it is a masterpiece of how an animated work is made, with a story full of humor, tragedy, satire and that leaves you with a feeling of desolate emptiness while it makes you get attached to the characters in the process. Lastly, its opening alone is wonderful, it's one of those that make you stay to watch it and not press the "skip" button. El anime también destaca por su banda sonora; este fue uno de los aspectos que más me atrapó de la historia, puesto que la música aquí no sólo es usada para ambientar la narrativa de Cowboy Bebop, sino también para contarla. Mucho crédito en esto tiene la compositora Yoko Kanno, quién introdujo el estilo musical bebop (mismo nombre con el que es bautizada la nave), que deriva del jazz, a este anime. Además, los capítulos son titulados como sesiones, teniendo a veces nombres de canciones como Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) o Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen). Cowboy Bebop es una de esas producciones que ves y sólo puedes pensar en lo adelantada que estuvo para su tiempo. Es una joyita cultural que a veces pasa desapercibida pero es una cátedra de cómo se hace una obra animada, con una historia llena de humor, de tragedia, de sátira y que te deja con un sentimiento de vacío desolador mientras te hace encariñarte con los personajes en el proceso. Por último, solamente su opening es maravilloso, es uno de eso que te hacen quedarte para verlo y no presionar el botón “saltar”.
