Job of a policeman is stressful and that stress can manifest in different and unexpected ways, including one that affected protagonist of Dead Heat, 2002 Canadian film written and directed by Mark Malone. Boston police officer Albert Paul “Pally” LaMarr (played by Kiefer Sutherland) has expected a lot in his line of duty, but not to suffer heart attack at the age of 35. Forced to retire, he isn’t able to sexually satisfy his wife Charlotte (played by Radha Mitchell) who find solace in the bed of another man. The only one Pally can lean on in his troubled times is Ray (played by Anthony LaPaglia), his brother who earns his living through various shady schemes. Thanks to his connection, Ray has found race horse which he consider a favourite while everyone else thinks it is worthless. Ray and Pally buy a horse for small amount of money and hire Tony La Roche (played by Lothaire Bluteau) as jockey. Problems arise when it turns out that Tony is a gambling addict who owes large amount of money to vicious Irish mob boss Frankie Finnegan (played by Daniel Benzali).
While the film’s opening suggest routine police action thriller, the rest of film turns into something more resembling a comedy. Much of this impression is made due to quirky characters played by rather relaxed but effective trio of Sutherland, LaPaglia and Bluteau. The ending, however, returns Dead Heat into the thriller territory. That ending is rather weak, and Malone’s uninspired direction makes this film one of the more forgettable entries in filmographies of their three main actors.
