The story behind the piano: When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars

Hello #scrobble.life community! I always write from something that inspires me, and recently a neighbor told me that he had ended his relationship with his girlfriend and told me how much the song When I Was Your Man meant to him; that’s why I decided to analyze it.

According to important music critics, there are songs that sound like forced heartbreak (usually to make money, because breakups sell) and others that, because of their brutal honesty, feel as if a thousand knives were being driven into you at once. When I Was Your Man is clearly one of the second kind: classified as a ballad that was born from a real crisis and that, ten years later, many people are still listening to.

Inspiration in the fear of losing Jessica

Although Mars has always been reserved about his private life, he confessed to Rolling Stone that he wrote this song during a particularly difficult moment in his relationship with model Jessica Caban, when he felt afraid of losing her. The song is not an invention about a fleeting summer love, but the words of a man who realizes that the true treasure was not a Grammy, but having someone so special by his side. Certainly, what man hasn’t been afraid of losing his woman?

In an interview with MTV, Mars summed it up with a phrase that says it all: “This song is about a special woman I let go a long time ago.” He also acknowledged that although the song is heartbreaking, for him it had a happy ending, because he was able to channel all that pain into something real.

When a piano and a voice say it all

Musically, When I Was Your Man is a piano ballad with some soul. Mars didn’t pay for overwhelming production, since it wasn’t necessary and the instrumentation is simple too: a warm piano and Mars’s voice as the starring duet.

Critics noticed it immediately. The New York Times expressed that “the piano says it all in this song.” And the chord progression, with a jazz-pop and classic soul feel, reminds us of great names like Elton John or Billy Joel. Bruno Mars himself defined it as “the purest way to make music.” Source

The lyrics

The lyrics are very vulnerable, Bruno does not present himself as a romantic hero but as the villain of his own story. He acknowledges that he was “too young, too dumb” to realize that he should have bought her flowers, held her hand, or made time for her when he had the chance.

Personally, I feel that the greatest emotional weight comes when he says: “My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfishness made a good woman like you leave my life.” And the most painful part, and what makes the song great, is his final wish: he asks her new man to give her all the love that he didn’t know how to give her. Personal Opinion

The song is not about asking for second chances, nor about a romantic hero or someone who wishes something bad on his previous relationship, but about a repentant man who recognizes his mistakes and wants his ex-woman to have everything he didn’t know how to give her. Taking it back to what recently happened, I feel a bit sorry for my neighbor, but I hope he learned his lesson.

La historia detrás del piano: When I Was Your Man de Bruno Mars

Hola comunidad de #scrobble.life!

Musicalmente, When I Was Your Man es una balada de piano con algo de soul.
