Hola amigos || Hello friends

“Liar Liar” is, for me, a Jim Carrey classic, and it’s remembered by most as a comedy full of exaggerated gestures and absurd situations. Yet behind all those funny faces and the rather comical antics of a lawyer who is unable to lie for 24 hours all because of his son’s sweet and noble birthday wish lies something more. What I like most about this movie and why I’m sharing it with you is that beneath it all lies one of the deepest and most painful reflections on fatherhood. It’s a message that we should undoubtedly pay close attention to.

I know that sometimes it’s hard for us to question ourselves as parents we’ll always believe that what we’re doing is right but in our pursuit of perfection, we might make mistakes so naive that they may not be easy to forget. As a father, of course I don’t like being away from home, far from my family, my home, and a little girl who has won my heart. Even though she’s not my biological daughter, I love her, respect her, and care for her as if she were my own, ha ha ha… But there are times when we come home tired from work, maybe in a bad mood because of work or the day’s events. I won’t lie to you I don’t usually play with her much, but I do try to create memories together those beautiful ones that she’ll surely remember even when she’s grown up.

As for the main character in this review, Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey), he isn’t a bad man, but he is an absent father. His mistake didn’t stem from hitting or yelling at his son; rather, he had a misguided idea of responsibility, believing that wanting to give his son Max the best meant prioritizing his work and being away from home. He neglected that paternal role of creating memories, moments, and dreams together with Max. In his eagerness to build a major empire, Fletcher forgot the one thing that truly mattered to his son: his presence and the creation of shared memories.

I’m sharing this movie today because I managed to watch it again yesterday, and today I can say that it does more than just make me smile it gives me a real lump in my throat and quickly brings me to tears, ha ha ha… Remember, men cry too! I don’t identify with Fletcher’s lies of course not but I do identify with the pain of distance. Besides Lunita, I have a 17-year-old son who had to move abroad with his mom when he was 6, leaving a completely empty space behind. For about 11 years now, I’ve been feeling my son’s presence from afar through video calls, through WhatsApp messages and it’s a void that has shattered my heart from the inside. Seeing Max struggle so innocently to get his father back reminds me that there’s no greater longing in my life than to be close to my son. Of course, I also long to share simple afternoons with him, laugh at silly things, create those memories together, and fully experience that unique love between father and son.

Hope is the last thing we lose perhaps that moment is just around the corner. Another message that Mentiroso, Mentiroso leaves us with is that time waits for no one, and our children’s childhood won’t wait until our schedules are free. So, everyone, let’s not forget to spend time with our children, to watch them grow and become what we’ve always wanted them to be: extraordinary people.

    I first watched Jim Carrey in The Mask and ever since, I've always enjoyed his films. I haven't watched this one yet but the premise seems interesting and thoughtful. I'm sure there are plenty of funny moments in this movie. I like that it encourages parents to pay attention to their children and wards. It's an important lesson viewers can take away from the story. This movie sounds like one I would enjoy watching. Good review!

    Beautiful reflection, my friend. Memories with our children are irreplaceable; seeing them become extraordinary beings will be a beautiful thing to witness. I understand your feelings too, I also have a son who grew up far from me and it hurts a little, it just makes me happy to know that he is well and much better off than here. Saludos y bendiciones

    I actually happened to be talking about this movie a few days ago—what a coincidence 😂. I was talking about Carrey’s exaggerated gestures; I still find myself laughing at his antics, but I also find myself reflecting on the theme presented here.

    Men cry too, no doubt about it 😂. I hope you’ll be able to reunite with your son someday.

    If this movie is a classic, with its touch of comedy, and as you say, something for parents to reflect on—these days, many parents are far from their children, some because of their own irresponsibility, and others, as in your case, because life or fate forced them to be apart while they sought a better future— the important thing is that you stay in touch, even if it’s from a distance—that means a lot to your son. I hope you’ll be able to reunite with him soon. Best regards.

    No doubt this was a great Jim Carrey movie with an excellent story, and Jim Carrey's unique style made it even more interesting. I still remember that court scene 🙂

    It is said what you said about your son, I hope you'd meet with him face to face soon.
