Todos tenemos un Panda Rojo interior | RED [ESP-ENG]

Review by @elizabeths14 · 1658d · of Red Panda

When we think of a Panda, we imagine that black and white bear, but when we talk about a Red Panda, we don't mean a bear, we mean a really red Asian Panda.

Turning RED, is one of the many Disney movies that I have watched with my daughter Ammy, she has a love for watching Disney Plus and as a mother I like to share time with her, so we go to my room alone and on my laptop we watch a movie.

Ammy is 8 years old and there are still some things she doesn't understand about this film, but there are many others that she does. On this occasion and while we were enjoying RED together, daddy made us popcorn, which we can't miss.

RED is a new film that clearly talks about the terrible stage of adolescence and how difficult it can be to struggle with hormonal changes, our emotions and also the fact that our parents don't still see us as babies. Whoever says that adolescence is easy, simply hasn't lived it.

It is true that times have changed, but Mei Mei, our little protagonist, represents those teenagers that we, the adults of today, were yesterday. She is a girl who thinks she is sure of herself, although she is clear about many things, but at the same time she struggles with the fact that she wants to be a perfect daughter and herself.

Mei has three friends, a bit weird hahaha, but they love and support each other, they are all different, unique and with a particular talent, but with the same purpose, they want to become a woman, which reminds me of something, menstruation and that's when becoming a woman and red makes sense hahaha.

When we were children we longed to be adults and now that we are adults, we long to be children again. We wish for something without thinking about the process we have to go through and the changes we have to make to get there and without thinking that even if we achieve it, we have to live and enjoy each stage of our lives as unique.

When the changes begin we are afraid, it is normal, adults are also afraid and hiding is not an option when we are teenagers who have to go to school and fulfil certain obligations of that age, because although we think we are very old, our parents are in charge.

There are changes that are necessary and what we may find frightening, others may find surprising and pleasing. In times of change, whether physical or emotional, is when we will know who really values and loves us.

RED also teaches us how difficult it is to go through all the change that adolescence brings and to have a strict and overprotective mother, which can also represent the father figure, but usually the ones who always tend to overprotect are the mothers.

This film reminded me of the time I was in high school and I was walking with my friends through the entrance, when I turned around and saw my mum coming in 😱 Literally, I hid! There wasn't a parents' meeting, nor had she been summoned to go, she just went to see the place where she was studying, because she was provoked xD I don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️

turning-red-disgusted.gif Ming Lee

And well, another difficult part of adolescence is that we start to feel things, things that we don't understand what they are and that sometimes we don't know how to control and we start to write songs, that our mothers think are letters and I imagine my mum as Ming Lee, when she read Gilberto Santa Rosa's song Que alguien me diga.

I remember while we were watching the movie, Ammy was telling me that I was Mei and my mum Ming Lee and well, kids always tell the truth hahaha and I love my mum, but I still find it a bit stressful to have her visit me or to have her too close.

My mum and dad too 😑😒 they were the typical parents that you would never bring a friend over to the house, one time one of them thought to visit me and my mum asked him: "What do you want with my daughter?" 😱 Oh my god! what's wrong with them? I didn't even like him.

The truth is that every Ming Lee has a past, a reason why he or she is the way he or she is. Whether it's repeating patterns of behaviour and upbringing, or going to the other extreme, in my case I'm a bit more relaxed in many ways.

When I think of all that my mother had to go through, I don't justify her, but I do understand a lot of her behaviour in terms of my upbringing, as she was more permissive with my sisters, even though they were younger than me.

I imagine that it was not easy growing up without a father, being raised by grandparents and uncles who were often unfair, while her mother worked far away for her and her siblings, and when she finally arrived home instead of enjoying them, she demanded and punished them, and although my grandmother undoubtedly loved them, she didn't have it easy either and didn't know how to show it.

As adults and parents, we often think that we have all our emotions under control and this is not the case, we all have an inner red panda, which is always waiting for the moment to come out. We should not repress our emotions, we should know how to manage them and live with them.

When we are children we don't know emotions like hate, anger, frustration or some stronger ones, and it is as we grow up that we discover who we really are and what is inside us, but the fact of locking up our panda doesn't mean that everything is under control.

In the end the most important thing is to understand that parents can also apologise, ask for forgiveness and accept that we can also learn from our children. We must accept that as parents we often make mistakes and hurt our children, even if all we want to do is protect them, but we do not protect them from ourselves.

Children are an inheritance from God, a gift, that one day they will grow up and be the way they have decided to be, under the upbringing we gave them and that in the end if we instil good values and good habits, they will never leave them, but we cannot believe that we are going to keep them in a bubble, so that society does not harm them or talk about them.

If you haven't seen RED, it is a film that I recommend watching with the family and with an open mind to understand all the messages it sends, not only in terms of the hormonal changes of an adolescent, emotional changes, but also in terms of parents, generations and everything that comes with being a family.
