Mamma Mia (2008): Take me to Greek summer!

Review by @evaredskin · 1616d · of Mamma Mia!

Baby, it's still cold outside and we dream of being in warmer climates or of summer coming.

So, I thought with today's post I would bring summer closer to you. And what better way to do that than with the Greek summer.

So let's move on to the fantastic Greek island of Kalokairi (Greek for summer). Sophie, who is about to get married, has invited three men to her wedding, one of whom is probably her natural father. Her mother had relationships with all three men at the time Sophie was conceived, which Sophie has discovered from her mother's diary.

Her mother, Donna has a villa in Summer, which she is trying to run as a hotel (unsuccessfully, admittedly), which is where Sophie's wedding is to take place. When she realizes her daughter is hiding something and follows her, she finds herself in front of her 3 former lovers, Donna now has not one, but three troubles, as each of them claims paternity of Sophie, and Donna herself.

Who will ultimately be the "winner"?

This film belongs to the category of julebox musicals; this means that a majority of the songs are well-known songs or belong to a record, with the plot of the film interwoven with the songs and music.

Even if you're not a fan of musicals, like me, I think you'll enjoy the movie. If you ask me why, let me list the reasons why I believe this: 1 Did I mention that Meryl Streep is in it? Her name alone is a serious role to see in any movie. And not only does she sing, but she dances and does comedy. And it's not just Meryl Streep in the cast, but Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and my favorite Colin Firth (Mr. Darcy, ❤️ ❤️ ❤️for ever). How cute to see the usually serious Brosnan dancing (that means trying to) or the shy Firth having a blast.

2 The songs of Abba. I promise you that from the first song you will start humming, then singing loudly, pretending you have a microphone in your hands, and at the end you will do a whole choreography in your living room 3 Do I need to say it out loud? The beautiful Greek landscape. The film is shot almost entirely on the idyllic island of Skopelos with its deep blue waters, picturesque alleys and beautiful beaches. Add the Greek element to the mix and it's a surefire recipe to take you straight to summer.

So, friends of the community, put on your summer clothes, put on your sandals and get a cocktail ready to enjoy this cool summer movie.
