There is rarely a movie like this, which is every scene, sentence in the script, and acting, composed by heart. Adapted from a novel titled the same works R.J. Palacio, Wonder is one of the few spectacles that restores the belief that Hollywood still has the sensitivity to taste. Seen since the opening sequence when voice over Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) sounded, telling about the birth process like a comedy. But the antics of the father's nervousness, Nate (Owen Wilson), becomes bitterness when through the veil of Auggie sarcasm reveals the comedy's "punchline" that provokes panic in the birthing room. He was born with a disability, Auggie has a rare Treacher Collins syndrome that causes facial deformities. Several times the operation was not much help. Despite his dream of flying high, like astronauts who often he wore his helmet flying in outer space, while the infinite borderless adventure of Star Wars so his penchant. Until the mother, Isabel (Julia Roberts) decided it was time for Auggie to attend public school to get to know the outside world. The weird look, mockery, exile, until betrayal must be dealt with, while at the same time, the older brother, Via (Izabela Vidovic) feels forgotten by his parents who always care about Auggie.
Director Stephen Chbosky who co-wrote the script with Jack Thorne and Steve Conrad cleverly handle the parable in his novel about the condition of the protagonist and the solar system. Based on the idea that Auggie is like the sun with other universe objects orbiting around it. Auggie abnormalities are not viewed as weaknesses, but magnets that draw people around them learn about life while slowly growing stronger. Focusing on some prominent characters (marked by sub-title of their name) unfortunately feels more suitable to apply in book language than film narrative.
Auggie obviously suffered, but Chobsky who has experienced working on films containing estranged figures through The Perks of Being a Wallflower reluctant to exploit the suffering. Wonder did not try to wail for mercy, but a message of equality, that Auggie should be treated like any other boy. Not only positive things. He also has the right to experience betrayal in the sphere of friendship, also given the understanding if not all matters concerning him as ejected from the mouth of Via. Many films about disability actually contribute more to the subject, but Wonder does not. language speech Stephen Chobsky shouted the vicious magic of images. From the Chewbacca cameo to the visualization of Auggie's shadow wearing a complete astronaut uniform repeatedly representing the character's heart. From those magical moments, his emotions came from. On the other hand, Chomsky also has the sensitivity of handling simple moments, especially the interaction between the Pullman family, where patience build tempo plus the use of medium shot plus close-up as an effort to prioritize dialogue along with acting, is the mainstay of the director's weapon convey the sense.
The balance of Owen Wilson plays a comedy and drama portion generates warmth, while Izabela Vidovic is a master of inner complexity, consequently, the dilemma of Via is easy to understand and invites sympathy. But Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay is the core of the film's emotional drive. When prosthetic dressing did not deter Tremblay's skill performance thrilling the audience, Julia Roberts delivered one of the purest performance of her career, with high sensibility. Reach wide, from the happy smile, anger, emotion, to sadness. All ended up draining my tears.
