  1. [ES-EN] Inspirational Film: Wonder@joheredia21998d

    Extraordinario

    Wonder

    [English Version]

Although we all agree that life is beautiful, it is undeniable that there are various conditions that can make many people feel that it is not so wonderful, sometimes we are afraid to see life from another perspective, a different point of view, as when an illness invades a loved one, tragedies or some condition at birth, can be an important psychological point that can cloud that vision of beauty and beauty that means to live. But there are some heroes who set aside those limitations in their heads and decide to live fully before the sceptical gaze of others, people who have dared to set aside those fears that bind them like chains and become true miracles of life.

    Source

The film that I have decided to review today is very special, it is not "just another film to watch", I would dare to say that it is a must see film for every person, each of us have fears, complexes, the fear of being observed and criticized by society, either by our appearance, conditions or behaviour, this type of film invites us to believe again in humanity and that perhaps we can be happy despite any obstacle, exemplifying a hero of life, a little boy with a malformation in his face.

From my point of view there are two ways to see this film, placing oneself inside the shoes of the character or inside the vision of August's little family, we will know how fears can be faced with the support of the family and the importance of friendship in all this process.

    Life outside the ordinary:

One of the aspects that makes me reflect on this film is about the probabilities that a person has to suffer a similar condition, to place oneself in their shoes and think, "everyone is normal, except me", would be disastrous for many people, the truth is that life is an endless number of probabilities and that some can have the best that this world has to offer, but others have to go through really difficult situations and must know how to live with that burden forever. In my case I am always thankful for my health and for how life has treated me, as well as being thankful for my daughter's health, with each passing year I realise that health is the most important thing.

    A Powerful Mindset

Facing fears, is one of those key aspects of the film, fear of being watched, if we look at it from the world of a child soon to be a teenager, becomes a major fear of the child's mental health, of being teased. While he doesn't want to face them, his parents help him to do so, to face the fact of going to school for the first time and living with other children who will surely look at him when he walks past them.

    Source

We see how parents who, despite not being perfect, try to help their situation as far as they can, carrying a lot of stress and neglecting other aspects of life to make their child feel as good as possible about themselves, the film shows us that beautiful and chaotic life of parents taken to an important extreme, but who manage to make the home a happy place.

Certainly, it is different to see it from the eyes of a parent, who will always wish the best for their children, in my case, this film has a double helping of emotions because we also put ourselves in the shoes of parents, we are distressed that another person, child or adult makes our children feel bad, it is something we never want to happen, however, the condition of our protagonist makes you feel that anguish coming out of the screen.

    Source

    Final

The ending is without a doubt, presents the most emotionally charged scenes, teaching us important life lessons, a good film and with a great ending that encapsulates everything we want to see, I won't give any more clues in case anyone wants to see it.

    Acting and Characters

The cast of this film is made up mainly of Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, two great actors accompanied by the impressive talent of young Jacob, who gives a performance to bring tears to our eyes, the construction and development of different characters is very interesting in the film, as although the star is the little boy with the condition on his face, the characters have a brief moment on screen where they are the centre of attention, seeing from the perspective of the parents and even a sister what life is like within this situation.

    Source

    Rating:

    8.5 ⭐️

    Final Opinion

This is a valuable film, the teaching and how we can see life, friends and family in a different way, I think it is one of those inspiring films that you should see every now and then, especially when you are a parent.

Inspirational is perhaps one of the words that provides an essential feature of the film.

    Source

    Do I recommend it?

Of course you do, it's a beautiful film, with a much needed message for the whole modern family, a film that without having so much drama can bring a tear to the cheek, definitely a film that I recommend watching as a family when the opportunity exists. I openly recommend it.

  2. Wonder (2017)@andreseloy5811095d

    image.pngImage

The screenplay of this movie written by Jack Thorne, Steve Conrad and Stephen Chbosky, was based on the homonymous book written by Raquel Palacio published in 2012, which was a great commercial success.

The plot revolves around a ten year old boy who lives in Brooklyn whose name is August, with his parents Nate and Isabel, his older sister Olivia and his dog Daisy, this child was born with a rare medical facial deformity, which is referred to as "mandibulofacial dysostosis" and therefore his mother decided to educate him at home until at the insistence of his father they enroll him in a private fifth grade school whose name is Beecher Prep School.

    image.png Image

It should be noted that he has undergone 27 different surgeries to see, smell, speak, hear and even look better and it is a challenge to have to show himself to the other children, something he achieves by wearing a costume that includes a helmet, however, despite being isolated from the others, he manages to establish a friendship with one of his classmates named Jack.

The plot revolves around the adaptation and experiences of the boy and his environment in those days and the interrelationship that he manages to have despite his difference.

    image.png Image

The boy is played by actor Jacob Tremblay, who despite being only eleven years old has already participated in more than a dozen other films, including one called "Room" with which he won the Critic's Choice Movie Awards in 2016 as best young actor, while his mother Isabel is played by the renowned and multi-awarded Julia Roberts and the father by the actor known for his work in comedy films, Owen Wilson.

The film was directed by Stephen Chbosky, known in the area of literature for the success of his book The Perks of Being a Wallflower released in 1999, which was also taken to the screen in 2012 with medium success and the premiere of the film occurred in November 2017.

    image.png Image

The critics were positive, highlighting the good performance of its participants, especially the protagonist who was nominated again for the Critic's Choice Movie Awards as Best Young Actor but did not win, and was also nominated for the Oscar and BAFTA in the Best Makeup category, which also did not win.

The film's budget was only 20 million dollars, a figure that was multiplied in the box office, which reached 306 million dollars, making it a complete success.

    image.png Image

A good option to watch it with the family where the value of friendship is handled very well and leaves as a moral that physical appearances are not important because beauty is in the feelings.

  3. Wonder || Judging him for his appearance and imprisoning him without realizing it!@cute-cactus1332d

The children we have are our most precious treasure. So we want to protect them from everything. Overprotectiveness is perhaps in the genes of parenthood.

The 27 patient identification bracelets hanging on the wall of the room are evidence of a difficult life and 27 surgeries. And the owner of this life is a 10-year-old boy.

    [source](https://i.hizliresim.com/jmjuue7.png)

This is the story of August Pullman. The movie Wonder is the production that makes the story more meaningful with the magnificent acting of Jacob Tremblay, who brings him to life.

August Pullman is a child born with severe facial deformities as a result of a very rare DNA mismatch. He completed his primary school education at home and closed himself to outside life. With the encouragement of his family, he is forced to continue his secondary education at school as an ordinary student.

    [source](https://i.hizliresim.com/szzgwc3.png)

And the movie Wonder is a great movie about her struggles to fit in at school as an ordinary person.

It doesn't take much IQ to realize that our differences are truly assets to have. Skin color, appearance, weight, height, cultural differences, language, faith or tons more are simple details that separate us from each other in appearance.

These details should never be transformed by others into features that make a life difficult. If necessary, changing one's perspective and uncovering the real treasure behind what one sees can be actions that can help make a difficult life easier.

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/4rsrxYDfIzvtAsIE9wevxPRXAk4.jpg)

Through the life of August Pullman, Wonder offers great opportunities to expose many real-life bullying issues and to question behavior.

The 27 patient ID bracelets hanging on the wall at the beginning of the movie was the best scene I liked, but instead of understanding it immediately, I understood it later in the movie. Some pictures speak and the patient bracelets hanging on the wall were one of the pictures that spoke.

    [source](https://i.hizliresim.com/jmjuue7.png)

Lastly, Owen Wilson's performance as Charlie Gilbert, who I saw in Marry Me and whom Jennifer Lopez married in a lightning wedding, and Nate Pullman's performance as August's father in Wonder was also excellent.

Owen Wilson is the "laughing man" for me because he makes me smile just by looking at him without doing anything funny. He has a warm gaze and a sympathetic face!

Julia Roberts as Isabel, August's mother, captivated with her character of a responsible and strong parent. Keeping her son under her protection until he was 10 years old and supporting him by thinking that he should step into the outside life, her structure seemed to prove what a strong parental character she gave life to.

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/uV6c7JFxNqMNNxD81zs5iqnYVBi.jpg)

Izabela Vidovic, who played the character of Olivia, August's older sister, was one of the exemplary personalities with her understanding, sympathetic and warm behavior and her maturity beyond her years, which should be in a family. Her understanding and maturity was quite impressive, even though she was always the second-ranked daughter.

After such exemplary roles and very good performances, I refuse to give a recommendation on the movie as a must-watch/shouldn't-watch. Lol

It was the best family movie I have seen recently. I think that such productions will add more positivity to the lives of moviegoers and shed light on some of the dark spots in our minds. It was one of the movies that can come like medicine, especially when we are pessimistic.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the production of Wonder and wish them good health to continue such productions without a break. Because I will never keep my expectations low in such productions!

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/bX4xCSrfMhdqLw9nBFffOyWJrWd.jpg)

An additional piece of advice for those who are going to see the movie: please try to better understand why the boy hiding behind a helmet is doing it! When we all understand this, there will be no need for anyone to hide in certain houses, rooms, behind certain objects.

    IMG_20220804_210036.png

Today I want to talk about nothing more and nothing less than "Wonder" a film full of spectacular actors who undoubtedly, I must admit that they did a very nice job. Among them Julia Roberto, Owen Wilson, Jacob Tremblay, of the three I have seen great movies before, so when this one came out I did not think twice to see it, Jacob Tremblay for his part, always causes me a lot of tenderness and also a little admiration for the talented he is at his young age, but certainly I was very curious about his performance in such an emotional film.

"Wonder" tells the story of a little boy who we will know as Auggie, a tender and intelligent little boy who struggles with a terrible disease, which has led him to undergo a lot of surgeries throughout his life, not to mention that it has caused more serious deformity in his face that simply does not go unnoticed, Determined to protect their little boy, his parents educated him at home, until they were forced to enroll him in school for different reasons, this big change causes fear to all members of the family, who do not want the world, which we all know is too cruel, to be hard on him.

When facing this new and big change, he meets three boys, who are assigned to accompany him, teach him the school and so on, but as soon as they start classes, they move away from him because of his appearance, leaving him completely alone in an unknown environment for him, however, in life we will always find someone honest and with good values, who will make a difference from the rest, right? Maybe, but you must watch the movie to see exactly what happens.

For Auggie, this big change, brings a lot of situations that they must face and learn from and it's great to be there to see it. A great movie with a lot of emotions that we will undoubtedly identify with and be moved by and of course, it reminds us and teaches us valuable lessons that we can put into practice in our own lives. Realizing that there are people who have to deal with illnesses and really hard situations and still be positive, is something we should learn from, sometimes we are very negative and we focus on seeing everything bad that happens to us, but there will always be someone having a worse time than us and sometimes this person has a big smile on their face.

We are not our problems, our limitations or our physical appearance, we are what we want to be, what we strive to be and it is up to us to believe it or not, this movie reminds us of this in a beautiful way, beyond our flaws and circumstances, we can live a life full of joyful moments, if we keep a positive attitude. I say that not all movies remind us of this in such a beautiful way.

On the other hand, true friendship goes beyond anything, far from being superficial or feeling ashamed of how we look, it appreciates what we are inside, our virtues and good qualities and also helps us to be better people. When we find a friendship like this we feel happy and grateful because we know we have found a treasure, but when a person is not honest and only wants to use us as an object of ridicule or to have the attention of others, then he can never have a sincere friend who really values what he is.

5. Wonder (2017) - Movie Review 🎥😊👍@vikbuddy1798d

    wonder.jpg source

So I saw the movie Wonder, which was a really, really Great movie.

The development of the film is also unique. The film unfolds as the narration changes with Auggie who was born with a facial deformity due to genetic problems, his older sister Via, Auggie's friend Jack, and Via's friend Miranda.

This child was born with a facial deformity due to a genetic problem. It is said that if you go to a crowded place, people will look at you once and then secretly look at you again without saying a word. They are afraid of appearing in front of others because they look strange. So, even when he is old enough to go to school, he just homeschools his studies at home.

Because of an idiot, her mother quit her job as an illustrator and only takes care of him at home.

Auggie sometimes paints at home, but he always draws Eugan.

Auggie's father is very caring and always a friend of the children. He always plays well with the children and plays computer games with them.

When Auggie actually turns 5, the family makes a big decision of sending Auggie to School. Auggie, who is burdened by the gaze of his friends, goes to school wearing an astronaut helmet that his sister's friend Miranda gave to him as a gift.

Fortunately, he becomes friend with Jack. Jack, who doesn't care at all about how he looks, is a friend who always jokes with him and gives him confidence in his school life.

His mom and dad always take care of him, and Via is growing up on her own, so she doesn't really care. Still, Via is a reliable older sister who doesn't have much of a dissatisfaction with her.

She knew that there is a 50% chance that she would have a child like Auggie and she believes that she could have been born with a facial deformity if she wasn't. She also thinks that Auggie, who is 50% of her other than herself, was born with his facial deformity just because she wished to have a brother on her birthday.

She's a bit depressed about her parents' attention to him only, to the point where she thinks that Auggie is the sun in her house, her other family members are planets, and she thinks all the planets revolve around the sun.

Still, the reliable Via grows up wonderfully on her own. Her best friend Miranda's change of heart also makes her a good friend when she's struggling a lot.

Jack, who treats auggie as a friend, hovers around his attention, looking for a chance to make up.

    Miranda

She is not only Via's best friend, but also really likes Auggie as her real brother. Then Miranda goes to her camp volunteer work during her vacation because her dad has an affair with a young woman and her mom, who is always drunk because of her dad, is troubled.

She lies to her people as if she were 'Via' during her camp outreach, fearing that her poor family circumstances would prevent her from making friends.

Hearing his family's circumstances, where she has a brother with a facial deformity between his father and mother, who is caring for a wealthy family, the lies continue to grow about what his friends are interested in.

After returning from camp, she distances herself from Via because she is ashamed of herself. However, the thought of wanting to see Auggie and to get along well with Via never leaves Miranda's head.

The movie unfolds in a really fun way. As the narration of each story of the main characters changes, misunderstandings are understood, and the structure of the film is firmly structured, making it a pleasant movie throughout.

I found the movie so much interesting, heart warming and it really touched me.

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about a movie that fascinates me personally, I think it is one of my favorites.

  7. Review Film: WONDER (2017)@film-trail3017d

There is rarely a movie like this, which is every scene, sentence in the script, and acting, composed by heart. Adapted from a novel titled the same works R.J. Palacio, Wonder is one of the few spectacles that restores the belief that Hollywood still has the sensitivity to taste. Seen since the opening sequence when voice over Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) sounded, telling about the birth process like a comedy. But the antics of the father's nervousness, Nate (Owen Wilson), becomes bitterness when through the veil of Auggie sarcasm reveals the comedy's "punchline" that provokes panic in the birthing room. He was born with a disability, Auggie has a rare Treacher Collins syndrome that causes facial deformities. Several times the operation was not much help. Despite his dream of flying high, like astronauts who often he wore his helmet flying in outer space, while the infinite borderless adventure of Star Wars so his penchant. Until the mother, Isabel (Julia Roberts) decided it was time for Auggie to attend public school to get to know the outside world. The weird look, mockery, exile, until betrayal must be dealt with, while at the same time, the older brother, Via (Izabela Vidovic) feels forgotten by his parents who always care about Auggie.

Director Stephen Chbosky who co-wrote the script with Jack Thorne and Steve Conrad cleverly handle the parable in his novel about the condition of the protagonist and the solar system. Based on the idea that Auggie is like the sun with other universe objects orbiting around it. Auggie abnormalities are not viewed as weaknesses, but magnets that draw people around them learn about life while slowly growing stronger. Focusing on some prominent characters (marked by sub-title of their name) unfortunately feels more suitable to apply in book language than film narrative.

Auggie obviously suffered, but Chobsky who has experienced working on films containing estranged figures through The Perks of Being a Wallflower reluctant to exploit the suffering. Wonder did not try to wail for mercy, but a message of equality, that Auggie should be treated like any other boy. Not only positive things. He also has the right to experience betrayal in the sphere of friendship, also given the understanding if not all matters concerning him as ejected from the mouth of Via. Many films about disability actually contribute more to the subject, but Wonder does not. language speech Stephen Chobsky shouted the vicious magic of images. From the Chewbacca cameo to the visualization of Auggie's shadow wearing a complete astronaut uniform repeatedly representing the character's heart. From those magical moments, his emotions came from. On the other hand, Chomsky also has the sensitivity of handling simple moments, especially the interaction between the Pullman family, where patience build tempo plus the use of medium shot plus close-up as an effort to prioritize dialogue along with acting, is the mainstay of the director's weapon convey the sense.

The balance of Owen Wilson plays a comedy and drama portion generates warmth, while Izabela Vidovic is a master of inner complexity, consequently, the dilemma of Via is easy to understand and invites sympathy. But Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay is the core of the film's emotional drive. When prosthetic dressing did not deter Tremblay's skill performance thrilling the audience, Julia Roberts delivered one of the purest performance of her career, with high sensibility. Reach wide, from the happy smile, anger, emotion, to sadness. All ended up draining my tears.

  8. Wonder - Movie review--Everyone needs a cheerleader@mctiller3102d

    Wonder movie review

Wonder is based on the novel of the same name by RJ Palacio.  August, Auggie, Pullman was born with genetic defect that caused him to be born with severe facial deformities.  He has numerous surgeries to help him see and hear, and to help with how his face looks.

Auggie is a normal ten year old.  He is into space, Star Wars, Minecraft, and playing his Xbox.  But he is homeschooled and doesn’t seem to have friends outside of his family.

Auggie is born into a well off family in New York.  His mom is able to stay at home and home school him.  The movie begins when at the age of ten his parents decide that it is time for him to enter a regular school as he old enough for middle school.  Auggie’s mom Isabel Pullam, played by Julia Roberts, is understandably exhausted from homeschooling him his whole life.  His father Nate Pullman, played by Owen Wilson, is terrified of sending him to school, he knows that kids can be cruel.  And of course they will be.

The movie is told from different points of view.

We begin from Auggie’s point of view.  He is given a private tour of the school at the end of summer break.  He meets with the school principal Mr Tushman, played by Mandy Patinkin, and he given a tour by three students.  This seems to be the first time that Auggie has ever interacted with other kids his age, or at least kids his age that are nice to him.  Or course we see the first real bully, apply named Julian Albans, a spoiled well-to-do kid.  And we see the beginning of the first friendship in Jack Will.

The story invariable sends Auggie to school where he is bullied for the way he looks and to being way too much into Star Wars.  His first day he comes home hids in his space helmet and refuse to talk about his day.

The movie then switches to his sisters point of view.  Via is his older sister, and I found this part to be the most interesting.  Via tells her story as the forgotten child.  Via is normal and healthy, and when Auggie was born, when she was five, she became invisible.  As she astutely states that the family revolves around the Sun/Son, and we just the planets.  Via struggles with the issues of being a teenage girl who is entering high school.  Old friends moving on, boyfriends, and while still trying to connect with the parents that are more focuses on the younger sibling.  It is with Via, that we learn everyone needs a cheerleader.  Even those that don't seem to need one on the outside.  For Via, that cheerleader was her late grandmother.

And now with Auggie needing more attention due to being in school, she needs a cheerleader even more.  And this theme of cheering comes to the forefront when Via enters the drama club in an effort to make friends.

The movie pulls all the right and expected heart strings.

There have been some complaints that the movie hired an able-body actor to play Auggie with just a heavy does of make-up.  Auggie does not look as massively deformed as he is described in the book. I think there could have been more tension if Auggie looked closer to what was described in the book, but I’m being nit-picky here. The movie is aimed at upper elementary and middle school students who read the novel.  And for that it hits the mark.

Auggie is funny and smart.  His parents are good parents who do a very good job of raising Auggie, which in some way took away some of the struggle.  They are able to protect him through home schooling and then sending him to an expensive private school.  But in the end, Auggie is a person we want to know personally, and that is what makes the movie enjoyable.  And to remember that when faced with the choice to be right or kind: Choose Kind.

And the movie reminds us that we all need a cheerleader in our lives.

    Final Thoughts

I would recommend catching this before it leaves the theaters.  If you have a middle schooler, they have probably read the book and would enjoy this interpretation of the book.

  9. A Geeky Dad’s Movie Guide to Wonder (2017)@hanshotfirst3135d

    Amazing

*You can't blend in when you were born to stand out. This movie stands out.*

Two months ago, I could not escape that one word while writing my review of R.J. Palacio's book Wonder.

I ended that review with the following:

The movie version of Wonder, starring Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts, will be released on November 17, 2017. I hope your kids are able to read it before then. Although I don't think the movie will possibly be able to do this book justice, I'm taking my kids on opening weekend no matter what. I am going to hold out hope that the movie will be... Amazing!

Astonishingly, the creative team of Stephen Chbosky, Steve Conrad and Jack Thorne pulled off a miracle. They managed to translate most of the joy and power contained in Wonder's 315 pages to the big screen. Even more spectacular is the fact that they were able to do it without disappointing me.

I LOVED this book. It may even be my favorite non-scifi or fantasy book ever. For me, this movie had a huge responsibility. It had to avoid disrespecting it's source material. It owed that to the novel. Somehow, the film managed to not only respect the story, but enhance it.

*Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.*

The vast majority of the time, I do not enjoy movies based on books that I have read. I typically find that these movies feel "hollow" and incomplete. It is nearly impossible for a movie to include all of the essential details contained in a book. For example, I can't stand the first Harry Potter movie. The filmmakers nearly completely ignore Harry and Neville's relationship. Harry's treatment of Neville is one of the most important factors in establishing Harry as a hero. The one exception to this rule is The Lord of the Rings trilogy... and that is only because Peter Jackson spent almost 12 hours over three movies telling the incredible story.

Yet, somehow, even though it was under 2 hours long, Wonder overflowed with fun and emotion while feeling totally complete... amazing!

Don't get me wrong. The movie is not perfect. My kids and I spent the entire ride home listing the events and details from the book that we wished were included in the movie. There were many.

One very telling sign of a quality movie is that your only complaints are that you wanted more of it.

Luckily, there happens to be a novel to give you more! I see this film as a companion to the book Wonder. Although you can truly enjoy each separately, I think the ultimate experience is to consume them together.

The movie manages to include enough detail to stay true to the story of the book. Although not every character is fleshed out as well as they are in the book, do not fear. Auggie, his parents and his sister are all done justice. Even though the same can not be said about all of the friends of the family, there is enough detail to make the audience understand these characters' importance. More importantly, the audience has enough information to allow them to like love these people.

I was very pleasantly surprised that the movie actually managed to improve on the book in some areas. In addition to the mother having a little added to her story, Auggie's imagination plays a major role. The writers and director took advantage of the visual medium and added some very clever, funny, and touching fantasy scenes. Star Wars fans will be especially pleased with some of these additions.

Hands down, my favorite upgrade was to Auggie's sister Via (played sensationally by Isabel Vidovic). In the book, Via was a great character... but she was not my favorite. After the scene portraying what Via does for her little brother on Halloween, she became one of my favorite characters of all time. If the writers' goal was to show the epitome of compassion, love, selflessness, and friendship, they should pat themselves on the back for a job well done. I will never forget that 120 seconds of movie magic. It was... amazing!

*Halloween wasn't the only day Via was her little brother's hero. She was there for him every day. I dare you to watch this scene without getting choked up. I double dog dare you to watch it and not contemplate how you could be a better sibling or friend. I know I did. I hope my children did as well. Sometimes all it takes is a whisper... amazing!*

Aside from a few of Auggie's classmates, the acting is incredible. Owen Wilson plays the funny yet loving dad perfectly. Normally, I can't stand Julia Roberts. In fact, when I saw she was in this movie, my heart sank. I am so happy that I was wrong. I actually liked her in this role and can not think of someone I would have rather had playing it. Isabel Vidovic's portrayal of Via propelled this character into my movie Hall of Fame. Jacob Tremblay as Auggie is simply wonderful. The movie was going to be made or broken on the strength of Auggie. Thank you young Mr. Tremblay for playing him as funny, strong, smart, and caring as he deserved. It was ... amazing!

When it comes to kids movies, emotion can be a mine field. Too much and parents need to deal with a blubbering mess all the way home. Not enough and the kids are bored and learn nothing from the film. But it is not enough to have the right amount of emotion. It takes true talent to pull off the amount of emotion required in this film. The true art is to stir a child's emotions... and then relieve them with some humor as fast as possible. That second piece is essential (I'm talking to you The Good Dinosaur which left my daughter a blubbering mess for days). Wonder has the perfect balance of emotion and humor. Notice I am writing "emotion" not "sadness". This is NOT a sad movie. It is a beautiful movie. It made my daughter cry "happy tears" (and by "daughter" I mean me). She and I were either near tears or in tears for almost the entire 113 minutes of runtime. Yet, we were also smiling for almost nearly as long. How can a movie make you cry and smile at the same time? You guessed it. It was... amazing!

*Not sure whether to choose to laugh or to cry? You don't have to. Do both. There is only one choice required by this story... choose kind.*

Every time the audience (it wasn't just me) was about to completely loose it, something funny happened to break the tension. Although I would not call Wonder a comedy, there are enough jokes and happy scenes to make viewing it an incredibly pleasant experience.

While I strongly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie, it is not essential. However, consuming this story in some form is essential. If you have kids or are a kid, you must see or read this story.

I would imagine that those who have not read the book first will still definitely enjoy the movie. It is a complete story that hits on the most important elements of the book and is incredibly uplifting and entertaining. However, if you truly enjoy the film, please know there is so much more wonder contained in the novel. You will love reliving the highlights of the movie while learning more about it's wonderful characters.

*I have always found it odd to clap at the end of a movie. No one involved is there to hear it. However, as the credits rolled and my son and daughter began to applaud, it felt odd not to join them. So I did. Amazing!*

TL;DR : See the movie Wonder right now. My wife, 12 year old son, 10 year old daughter, and I think it is one of the best movies we have ever seen.

  10. Wonder - Movie Review@coldsteem3138d

    wonder.jpg

Wonder is everything I expected it to be. It's the type of movie intended to pull at your heartstrings and make you smile, sometimes simultaneously. I found myself smiling a lot during this film. The story explores bullying from an extreme perspective, examining the topic from several perspectives. The intersection of characters around a fifth-grader with a disfigured face allows for a heart-warming story without ever getting too deep or heavy-handed.

    wonder2.png

August "Auggie" Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) was born with serious deformities. Three dozen surgeries later, he can breath, he can see and he can function. But his face still doesn't look normal. His mother, Isabel (Julia Roberts), home-schools Auggie through elementary school. She feels it is time for him to integrate into school as middle school is set to begin. It is a difficult decision, but she understands that her son needs to face the world. And Auggie understands he needs a science teacher that has better credentials than his mom. Dad Nate (Owen Wilson) is not keen on the idea, but relents. Auggie's transition to public school is difficult. The school principal attempts to ease the situation by having three students meet Auggie before school starts and show him around the school. The awkwardness passes, but Auggie still faces bullying from some of the students. Auggie's sister, Via (Izabela Vidovic) also struggles with her own issues as a satellite in Auggie's universe. It's your typical underdog story, but with a genuine heartbeat.

    wonder3.png

Wonder takes a cursory look at the relationships around Auggie and his struggles. While the parental relationships are explored directly, through Auggie's experience, we get to see him through the eyes of several other characters. Most important, his sister Via. Via loves her brother and often is the only one who can really give him straight talk. It is an important relationship in this story and it is handled well. Via also struggles with being outside the laser focus that her parents have towards her brother. She struggles with that, yet doesn't appeared damaged. Other writers may have written a sister who acts out or goes off the deep end. Instead, they give us a lovable sister who is a giver. Subsisting on the bit of attention she does get at times. I liked that approach. Had the writers been heavy handed with her character, they might have missed an opportunity. The delicate, nuanced approach worked for me. And it was credible to me, too. We also see Auggie through the eyes of his friend, Jack-Will (Noah Jupe). Jack is a typical fifth-grader. A kid with a good heart, but not always the best sense. I liked the duo. The friendship seemed genuine. Jack's story gives us a bit of back-story on Auggie before he integrated into his school, as well. We also get to see Auggie through the eyes of his sister's best friend, Miranda (Danielle Rose Russell). That approach gives us greater insight into the world of both Auggie and his other family members.

    wonder4.jpg

For a film that gives us characters who are likable, even in their imperfection, Wonder manages to also give us developed characters. There is a fine line there. Wonder is based on a book by R.J. Palacio. The screenplay was adapted by Stephen Chbosky (Director), Steve Conrad and Jack Thorne. The temptation may have been to create clear good guy and bad guy roles. That's the easy way out. We are dealing with characters that are primarily children. The soft approach was the correct one. While there were some peripheral characters that were a bit flat, that is okay in a story like this one. The essential characters were warm and engaging. Even the antagonists had redeeming qualities (for the most part). I felt connected to the characters and story. That's why I go to the theater.

    wonder5.JPG

Wonder is an excellent Christmas-season film. It will tug at your heartstrings. It will make you appreciate family. The film does examine bullying, with some mild language included. The minor thematic elements earned the film a PG rating. This is a film you should bring your kids to. It is an exceptional movie that is meant for a family to watch together. It may prompt questions from young viewers, which merely gives parents a great opportunity to speak their children about bullying. This film, from Lionsgate, runs 113 minutes.

    wonder6.png

I figured Wonder would be a feel-good movie. The trailers were pretty clear that this film would engage viewers at an emotional level. Films like this can sometimes be heavy handed, or at others, be cloyingly sweet. This film tilted more towards the cloyingly sweet realm, but did manage balance. It wasn't sickly sweet. It had a good blend of humor and heart. I smiled often and felt I knew the characters. The writing was excellent, the performances were spot on and the story was rewarding. There is not much not to like about this film. Definitely a family film worth watching. 8/10.

In the words of a precept by Auggie's teacher, Mr. Browne: When given the opportunity between being right or being kind, choose kind.
