I'm going to speak from the self because something that struck me was the following:

In my group of friends, it is very common to say things like: "that shirt makes you look fat", "what a pretty picture" and we reply "Pretty? What I am is fat" and this is accompanied by highlighting our flaws in "kilos others", when in reality we are only looking for approval.

Has it ever happened to you?

Then I reflect: "Am I really fat? What is fat? What would be the ideal weight?

When we talk about weight, stereotypes have a lot of influence. What we see on the networks, in movies, beauty contests and even the clothes we wear! Sometimes we look for one of our size and it is not there, there begin our complexes and constant search for approval.

I tell you, the word does incredible damage if someone has some kind of disorder. It's like saying "Don't be sad" to someone who is sad and thinking that this will make them better.

The illnesses of the body are illnesses of something that in our system does not work well; if we have a headache, there are pills, if we suffer from heart disease, we have a cure, but the illnesses of the mind? of those voices that make us distort reality, where do we leave it?

Ellen

Ellen (Lily Collins) is a teenager just like you and me. Since she was a little girl, she has had eating disorders to the point that she has been hospitalized for these same eating disorders.

Do you know what an anorexic looks like? Do you know the methods they use to get to that point? Do you know the symptoms and the types of anorexia there are? You probably know a little more than I do, because unfortunately I didn't know that a simple comment like saying "I'm fat" could do so much damage.

The anorexic goes beyond looking skinny or having a shirt that fits. It is that permanent distortion of thinking that you are fat, that food is bad and starting to change your eating habits to unhealthy and life threatening routines, is a disorder coupled with other symptoms that if left untreated, can cause or the likelihood of risk of death is high.

The actress does it very well, because even she underwent an abrupt weight loss in order to play the character. In addition, visible signs such as dark circles under the eyes, torn hair, deteriorated nails, hair loss, appearance of a younger or sickly age in terms of the normal parameters of a 20 year old person, complement the shocking images that are seen in the plot.

These eating disorder illnesses are usually accompanied by episodes that happen in someone's life related to diverse origins such as: dysfunctional families, childhood abuse, bullying, relationships with people who have this disorder "normalizing" weight loss, among others.

In Ellen's case, the family is focused on her treatment, her medical diagnostic, the treatments, but they do not realize that their interpersonal relationships have influenced and worsened this behavior to the point that her life is in danger.

Ellen is a reflection of a problem that we may very well have at home or be experiencing ourselves. Being aware of the symptoms present in our children, their nutrition, eating behaviors, conception of their self-esteem, how they perceive and feel about themselves, could help to detect some of these illnesses.

Conversation, avoiding discrimination and food reproaches, being ourselves examples of healthy eating and self-care, can also become positive points to attack these behaviors that threaten life; letting it pass or thinking that it is okay, is a mistake that we can pay with our lives.

Ellen

Score:

4/5

The plot is well worked, it deals with a current issue and shows very well the different types of disorders, the characteristics of each one, and even how they know each other's methods and even new "more effective" methods to achieve their goals in terms of weight loss.

For me it was shocking to see the access to all the information that these people have, even communities where they can share their experiences, as if they were talking about a new page to earn money, then they have more opportunities to know about the most effective procedures without being perceived by their environment, at least for a long time.

Why don't I give it a 5? A bit of a spoiler.

Because the side stories are, to my perception, kind of incomplete. They don't finish placing well the role of the doctor, the real intervention inside the house, the role of the caregivers who are evidently failing because the kids have the same behavior; I consider that if they place this intervention as "the best" then they fail as the other methods, the stories of the other kids, the role of the families, it would have been very interesting and would have made the movie more nourished.

Also the ending, I found it cold and lacking, but I like happy endings so it's okay.

As I said at the beginning, it is not an entertaining movie or a suspenseful plot, it is simply a disease that is there, latent, living among us and that we can identify, attack and above all prevent.

I'm writing down the name of the movie to look it up. The subject it deals with is very important in these times when many girls are suffering from problems that produce these self-destructive eating disorders.
