Within human history, there are characters who become famous not for their virtues, but for their harm; the cruel, disproportionate and inhuman application of the evil within them that makes them dangerous and, above all, underestimated. Personas como tú y como yo, de carne y hueso, que tienen hermanos, hermanas, familiares, que logran tener ciertas amistades e incluso, desarrollar vínculos emocionales con personas que son ajenas a ellos; como en el caso de convivir y saludar con extraños en la calle... Ahora bien, ésto de ningún modo quiere decir que sus actos, por lo que son conocidos, sean a causa o por culpa de incomprensión. Todo lo contrario, la respuesta más acertada, incluso para los profesionales, es que hacen lo que hacen completamente conscientes y decididos. Cual cazador tras su presa...
In this sense, to understand Richard Ramirez's crimes is to see only part of the reality. This is precisely what the Netflix docuseries shows us in the investigative case that unfolds what really happened to this character. Now, experts agree, in the case of the "Night Stalker", within the docuseries, that he grew up in a dysfunctional home, where his parents were not attentive to him and the authority and respect figures available to him in childhood were reduced to a cousin who was older than him and who instructed him in "Satanism". In other words, in practice, the Ramirez boy learned through his authority figures (whom he admired) that violence and being a despot was okay. In addition, he learned little value and empathy for others. Something like "the end justifies the means". El modo en cómo la prensa de Los Ángeles, terminó con apodarle "The Night Stalker", en virtud de la manera en que, según el peritaje forense y policial, descubrían su "modus operandi" al ingresar a moradas; generalmente a altas horas de la noche, y atacar primordialmente a víctimas de la tercera edad, mujeres e incluso a niñas al azar en la calle... Pero no nos adelantemos, en esta review, veremos cómo la mente de un monstruo, en ocasiones parece surgida desde el principio y no por el daño recibido.
Ahora bien, los expertos coinciden, en el caso del "Night Stalker", dentro de la docuserie, que él creció en un hogar disfuncional, donde sus padres no estaban pendientes de él y las figuras de autoridad y respeto que tenía disponible en la niñez, se reducían a un primo que era mayor que él y que le instruía en el "satanismo". Es decir, en la práctica el niño Ramírez, aprendió a través de sus figuras de autoridad (a las que admiraba) que la violencia y el ser déspota, estaba bien. Además, del poco valor y empatía por los demás. Algo así como "el fin justifica los medios". Cuestión que luego se supo en la misma autobiografía que relata las "hazañas y delirios" que lo hicieron infamemente famoso.
However, I won't reveal the plot, because my intention with this post is to let you go and draw your own conclusions. What I do want you to know is that you will certainly find it quite uncomfortable. Because you will be judging it (while watching the docuseries) with the healthy morality and ethics of people who do not normally slaughter others as if they were sheep or cattle? What I will detail, and what is at the heart of this post, is what lies behind the evil and inhumanity of Richard Ramirez's actions. Regardless of the causes that he argues for the acts of vileness that he did, the determining factor in understanding his personality is psychopathy: the least taken into account personality disorder in history.
Sin embargo, lo relativo a la trama no lo revelaré, porque mi intención con este post es hacer que ustedes, vayan y saquen sus propias conclusiones. Lo que yo quiero, es que sepan, que ciertamente lo hallarán bastante incómodo. Porque estarán juzgándolo (mientras observan la docuserie) con la moralidad sana, y ética, de las personas que normalmente no suelen masacrar a los demás como si de ovejas o ganado se tratara... Lo que sí les voy a detallar, y es el núcleo de este post,es lo que hay detrás de la maldad y la inhumanidad de los actos de Richard Ramírez. Independientemente de las causas que él arguya por los actos de vileza que hizo, lo determinante para entender su personalidad es la psicopàtía: el trastorno de personalidad menos tomado en cuenta de la historia.
It is the characteristic shared by these characters, the serial killers. Both he and Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, or Charles Manson, hold the same psychopathic, obsessive-compulsive pattern with respect to harm. Harm for the sake of harm is the premise. They enjoy inflicting pain on their victims and watching them squirm. Moreover, in some cases, they even go to the trouble of surveilling, stalking, raping and inflicting as much evil as possible on the people who are the protagonists of their twisted mentalities. And in the words of Robert Ressler, a well-known retired and deceased FBI criminologist; and also of John Douglas, who in his books asserts that psychopaths are incapable of being reformed. In other words, "incurable".
While this notion of "incurability" seems too drastic, it is well supported by the minds of these two great researchers, who devoted their lives to transcribing, interviewing and documenting their experiences with the worst killers in contemporary history, and in them the closest thing they found to remorse was the anxiety of typical prison confinement. To best exemplify, they were simply not sincerely sorry for their nefarious deeds, but for having been caught by the authorities or, by the snitching of someone close to them. Their emotions are not as shallow or empty as people might think, but are self-interested and once they cross the threshold of violence, they often never stop.

Además, en algunos casos, incluso, se toman las molestias de vigilar, acechar, violar e infringir la mayor cantidad de maldad posible hacia las personas que son protagonistas de sus retorcidas mentalidades. Y en palabras de Robert Ressler, conocido criminólogo retirado y fallecido del FBI; y también de John Douglas, que en sus libros aseguran que los psicópatas son incapaces de ser reformados. Es decir, "incurables".
Si bien, esta noción de "incurabilidad" parece ser demasiado drástica, pero está bien sostenida por las mentes de estos dos grandes investigadores, que dedicaron sus vidas a transcribir, entrevistar y documentar sus experiencias con los peores asesinos de la historia contemporánea, y en ellos lo más cercano al remordimiento que hallaron fue la ansiedad que les genera el encierro típico de la cárcel. Para ejemplificar mejor, sencillamente no se arrepentían sinceramente de sus nefastos hechos, sino de haber sido capturados por las autoridades o, por la delación de alguien cercano. Sus emociones no son superficiales o vacías como la gente pudieran pensar, sino que se limitan a sus intereses y una vez que cruzan el umbral de la violencia, jamás suelen detenerse.

Likewise, no matter how many years they are behind bars, their fantasies, the impulses that gave life to this kind of actions, do not disappear but go through a stage of "hibernation" where under the repressive and guarded characteristics of a prison system they cannot flourish, but when they are released (either on bail or having served their sentence) almost instantly the circle of cruelty and wickedness emerges and repeats itself.

No one is quite sure how psychopathic personality disorder begins, but what scholars do agree on is that it is multi-causal. Exposure to violence, pornography at an early stage, drug and alcohol abuse, and human miseries are often triggers. Not always, but they do tend to sow the seeds of what in the future will be a killing and annihilation machine. The curious thing is that no murder has ever been committed under the watchful eyes of an officer of the law. Which means, by default, that psychopaths are not usually "crazy" as they are commonly called, but quite logical. They only do so when conditions are favourable and not when there are risks for them.
Finally, the story of crime, murder and evil in "Night Stalker" is just one more in the unfortunate, curious and always competitive American society. But it is also a reflection of a world that does not usually investigate these kinds of disorders, nor prepare the authorities well for the protection of the citizenry. Within the investigative case presented by Netflix in the docuseries, there are each and every one of the details that the investigators had to go through and the testimonies of the psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists who had to deal with Richard Ramírez. Their professional assessments, but above all, the gloomy opinion that this is only the tip of the iceberg of something that will continue to repeat itself more and more.
Nadie sabe muy bien cómo se inicia el trastorno de personalidad psicopática, pero de lo que sí están de acuerdo los estudiosos en este tema es que es multicausal. La exposición a la violencia, la pornografía a una etapa temprana, el abuso de drogas, alcohol, y las miserias humanas suelen ser factores detonantes. No siempre, pero sí suelen sembrar la semilla de lo que en un futuro será una máquina de matar y aniquilar. Lo curioso del asunto, es que jam´s ningún asesinato se ha cometido bajo los ojos atentos de un oficial de la Ley. Lo que quiere decir, por defecto, que los psicópatas no suelen ser "locos" como son llamados comúnmente, sino bastante lógicos. Solo lo hacen cuando las condiciones son favorables y no cuando existen riesgos para ellos.
Finalmente, la historia de crímenes, asesinatos y maldad del "Night Stalker", es tan solo una más en la infortunada, curiosa y siempre competitiva sociedad estadounidense. Pero también es el reflejo de un mundo que no suele investigar este tipo de trastornos, ni preparar bien a las autoridades para el resguardo de la ciudadanía. Dentro del caso de investigación que presenta Netflix, en la docuserie, están todos y cada uno de los pormenores que tuvieron que pasar los investigadores y los testimonios de los psiquiatras, psicólogos y terapeutas que tuvieron que tratar con Richard Ramírez. Sus valoraciones profesionales pero sobre todo, la tétrica opinión de que esto es solo la punta del iceberg de algo que seguirá repitiéndose cada vez más.
