Continuando con las películas basadas en hechos reales, el día de hoy les traigo la reseña de una hermosa película llamada: Escritores de la libertad.
Fue estrenada en el año 2007 y producida por United International Pictures UIP. Esta es una adaptación del libro titulado "The Freedom Writers Diary" escrito por los verdaderos chicos de la clase 203 de Wilson High y su maestra Erin Gruwell.
Continuing with the movies based on real events, today I bring you the review of a beautiful movie called: Freedom Writers. It was released in 2007 and produced by United International Pictures UIP. This is an adaptation of the book titled "The Freedom Writers Diary" written by the real kids of Wilson High class 203 and their teacher Erin Gruwell.
Es una historia que se sitúa en la década de los 90´; Erin Gruwell comienza a dar clases en la institución Wilson High, ubicada en California, Estados Unidos.
En su primer día de clase nota que sus estudiantes se encuentran divididos por sus diferencias étnicas, cada uno con su grupo y muy alertas ya que siempre están en guerra unos con otros.
Aunque trata de impartir su clase, es desfavorecida por el poco interés de los adolescentes hacia la misma, muchos asistían solo por obligación y casi a diario se violentaban entre ellos.
It is a story set in the 90's; Erin Gruwell starts teaching at Wilson High, located in California, United States. On his first day of class he notices that his students are divided by their ethnic differences, each with their own group and very alert as they are always at war with each other. Although she tries to teach her class, she is disadvantaged by the lack of interest of the adolescents in it, many of them attended only out of obligation and almost daily they were violent among themselves.
Erin intentó buscar ayuda de sus superiores la cual le fue negada ya que para ellos estos jóvenes que pertenecían al “programa de integración” no eran nada más que unos simples delincuentes considerados los peores de la institución, sin un futuro o como los describen en una parte de la película: “Chicos sin éxito, de los que no se espera nada”.
Erin tried to seek help from her superiors but was denied because for them these young people who belonged to the "integration program" were nothing more than simple delinquents considered the worst in the institution, without a future or as they are described in one part of the film: "Unsuccessful kids, from whom nothing is expected".
La maestra se rehusaba a creer que ese tenía que ser el final para estos jóvenes, intentando ganar el interés de sus estudiantes, les habló sobre música, inglés, historia, hasta llegar a lo sucedido en la segunda guerra mundial lo cual comparaba con la guerra de las pandillas, afirmando que ellos y sus pandillas no eran nada comparados con los nazis y lo sucedido en el holocausto bajo el régimen de la Alemania nazi.
Al ver el interés de ellos, Erin saca un permiso para llevar a los estudiantes de excursión al Museo de la Tolerancia, el cual logra pero todos los gastos deben de correr por su cuenta lo que hace que ella deba buscar un segundo empleo.
Al mismo tiempo ella le otorga un proyecto que es un tipo “Diario”, dónde cada chico puede escribir todos los días lo que ellos quisieran, esto no valdría ninguna calificación pero era obligatorio. No obstante, era opcional dejar sus libretas para que Erin las leyera y sorprendentemente la mayoría accedió; Allí es cuando la maestra lee la trágica historia por la que pasan sus estudiantes y las guerras que deben vivir a diario.
The teacher refused to believe that this had to be the end for these young people, trying to gain the interest of her students, she talked to them about music, English, history, until she got to the events of World War II which she compared to the gang war, stating that they and their gangs were nothing compared to the Nazis and what happened in the Holocaust under the Nazi Germany regime. Seeing their interest, Erin gets a permit to take the students on a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance, which she succeeds but all expenses must be paid by her, leaving her to look for a second job.
At the same time she gives them a project that is a kind of "Diary", where each child can write every day what they wanted, this would not be worth any grade but it was mandatory. However, it was optional to leave their notebooks for Erin to read and surprisingly most of them agreed; that's when the teacher reads the tragic story that her students go through and the wars they have to live every day.
Comienza el siguiente año escolar y aunque su relación con sus alumnos va mejorando mucho, su relación personal se ve afectada hasta el punto que el esposo de la profesora decide separarse de ella ya que en todo ese tiempo y de tantas actividades extracurriculares no pasaban nada de tiempo juntos. La maestra siguió con planes aun cuando su esposo no la apoyó y la deja sola en su proyecto, ella creía en sí misma y en sus alumnos.
The next school year begins and although her relationship with her students is improving a lot, her personal relationship is affected to the point that the teacher's husband decides to separate from her because in all that time and so many extracurricular activities they did not spend any time together. The teacher continued with her plans even when her husband did not support her and left her alone in her project, she believed in herself and in her students.
Como proyecto final los estudiantes escriben sus diarios en forma de libro los cuales serán reescritos todos en un único libro en donde son libres de escribir y expresar sus pensamientos, sin importar su género, su origen social o color de la piel. Este libro se convertiría en el que da origen a la película.
As a final project the students write their diaries in book form which will all be rewritten into a single book where they are free to write and express their thoughts, regardless of their gender, social background or skin color. This book would become the source of the film.
Para el final de la película Erin convence al superintendente de que le permita enseñar a sus estudiantes durante sus siguientes años ya que ella era una docente principiante y no podía impartir clases en años superiores. Luego vemos como logra preparar a sus estudiantes que consiguen graduarse, siendo muchos los primeros en sus familias y además algunos logran asistir a la universidad.
By the end of the film Erin convinces the superintendent to allow her to teach her students during her next few years since she was a beginning teacher and could not teach in her senior years. We then see how she manages to prepare her students who manage to graduate, many being the first in their families and also some manage to attend college.
En conclusión esta es una película que cuenta la historia de jóvenes que nacieron en un ambiente muy desafortunado que intentan sobrevivir día a día rodeados de pandillas, armas y drogas. Lo que nos hace pensar y reflexionar en que tantos jóvenes que con tan solo 14 o 15 años viven con esa realidad a diario. Erin fue una docente ejemplar que supo llegar a estos adolescentes por los que nadie más daba nada, logro ganarse su respeto y llevarlos hacia adelante, hacia un futuro mucho mejor.
Es una película que vale la pena verla, tiene muchas enseñanzas y se las recomiendo 100%.

In conclusion, this is a film that tells the story of young people who were born into a very unfortunate environment and try to survive day by day surrounded by gangs, guns and drugs. It makes us think and reflect on how many young people as young as 14 or 15 years old live with this reality on a daily basis. Erin was an exemplary teacher who knew how to reach out to these teenagers for whom no one else would give anything, gaining their respect and leading them forward to a much better future. It is a movie worth watching, it has many teachings and I recommend it 100%.
