Sigo sin conexión a internet y con la miseria de señal que quiere brindarme mi operadora telefónica, por lo tanto, ha sido poco lo que a decir verdad he podido ver siempre que miro las películas y series a través de servicios en línea, mi única salvación ha sido la televisión por cable, en donde pese a que no transmiten películas nuevas sí puedes encontrar allí ciertas películas que han sabido ganarse un nombre dentro del cinéfilo que sabe apreciar el cine promedio, incluso el cine malo, con tal de entretenerse, y catalogan con título de joyas a películas como ‘El Ilusionista’ por sobresalir un poco dentro de la media. Por haber dado la talla en esta tarea de hacer mi existencia un poco más agradable en estos duros momentos pues decidí rendirle algo de tributo a esta película con una reseña donde trataré de exponer lo que más me ha gustado de ella, aunque intentando ser objetiva, aunque probablemente fracasaré. Debería advertir como siempre que sin que esta sea mi intención podría llegar a hacer algún spoiler puesto que la trama argumentativa implica secretos cuya revelación y lo que se puede dejar ver por todos los detalles es gran parte de la magia… un concepto que estará muy presente acá.

I'm still without internet connection and with the miserable signal that my telephone operator wants to give me, therefore, I have been able to see very little whenever I watch movies and series through online services, my only salvation has been cable television, Although they don't broadcast new movies, you can find there certain films that have earned a name for themselves among moviegoers who appreciate average movies, even bad movies, just to be entertained, and they label movies like 'The Illusionist' as jewels for standing out a little from the average. For having done my part in this task of making my existence a little more pleasant in these hard times, I decided to pay some tribute to this film with a review where I will try to expose what I liked the most about it, although trying to be objective, although I will probably fail. I should warn as always that without this being my intention, I could make some spoilers since the plot involves secrets whose revelation and what can be seen by all the details is a big part of the magic... a concept that will be very present here.
¿A quién no le gusta la magia? Para los creyentes fervientes de determinadas religiones, no deben responder, esta es una pregunta retórica. Acá tenemos una de las mezclas que marcan mi interés y me transportan a un sitio idílico de entretenimiento, magia, ilusionismo, ambientada en una época donde la gente viste etiqueta, involucra a la realeza, una investigación policial, secretos… atrapa su argumento desde el primer momento con esa sensación de misterio que la envuelve. Acá tenemos al ilusionista Eisenheim como nuestro protagonista, quien es interpretado por Edward Norton, sus asombrosos trucos han conseguido maravillar a la población de Viena, quizás demasiado, porque a algunas personas no les entusiasma la idea de alguien realizando magia en presentaciones que son aparentemente ajenas a la lógica, quién diría que hacer trucos de magia en el siglo XIX resultase en algo peligroso. Entre los escépticos se encuentra nada más y nada menos que el Príncipe heredero Leopold, interpretado por Rufus Sewell, que se toma el asunto como algo personal, empeñado por desenmascarar a ese impostor que está engañando incautos, peor, haciéndolo a este uno de ellos, algo que no puede tolerar.
Who does not like magic? For the fervent believers of certain religions, they should not answer, this is a rhetorical question. Here we have one of the mixtures that mark my interest and transport me to an idyllic place of entertainment, magic, illusionism, set in an era where people wear labels, involving royalty, a police investigation, secrets... it traps its plot from the first moment with that sense of mystery that surrounds it. Here we have the illusionist Eisenheim as our protagonist, who is played by Edward Norton, his amazing tricks have managed to amaze the population of Vienna, perhaps too much, because some people are not enthusiastic about the idea of someone performing magic in presentations that are apparently alien to logic, who would think that doing magic tricks in the nineteenth century would result in something dangerous. Among the skeptics is none other than Crown Prince Leopold, played by Rufus Sewell, who takes the matter personally, bent on unmasking this impostor who is deceiving dupes, worse, making him one of them, something he cannot tolerate.
El romance es una de las piedras angulares de la narración, una motivación suprema, que advierte lo que es capaz de hacer una persona por amor, lo cual no es un argumento nuevo pero siempre lo vamos a encontrar en toda clase de películas así que no sorprende, le añade un toque de sabor, de personalidad si se quiere, aunque a modo de crítica en este aspecto no se hace esa profundización que a mí me gusta ver sin enfrascarse en el dramatismo teatral de los excesos por cuestión de este genérico concepto de las relaciones de acuerdo con la época y ambientación que quiso dársele a la cinematografía, prefiero algo un tanto sutil con medias tintas que se desarrolle a lo largo del tiempo, sí entiendo el argumento de un amor juvenil que se quedó guardado en el corazón de ambos, esos de los que marcan la vida de una persona, separados por circunstancias externas, pero que cuando se da la conexión de una mirada nuevamente se aviva esa llama que esperaba el mínimo incentivo, sin embargo, me gustaría algo que evolucione con mayor fluidez, menos explosivo.
Romance is one of the cornerstones of the narrative, a supreme motivation, which warns what a person is capable of doing for love, which is not a new argument but we will always find it in all kinds of movies so it is not surprising, it adds a touch of flavor, of personality if you will, although as a criticism in this aspect is not made that deepening that I like to see without getting involved in the theatrical drama of excesses as a matter of this generic concept of relationships according to the time and setting that wanted to be given to the cinematography, I do understand the argument of a youthful love that was kept in the heart of both, those that mark the life of a person, separated by external circumstances, but when the connection of a look is given again that flame that was waiting for the slightest incentive is stoked, however, I would like something that evolves more smoothly, less explosive.
Las interpretaciones son sin lugar a dudas sobresalientes, Edward Norton sabe cómo aprovechar el aura que debe envolver al personaje, dígase misterio, ingenio, audacia, y esa mirada de pesar, que una vez se descubre todo, adquiere mayor relevancia. La problemática que se desarrolla alrededor de Jessica Biel sobre el papel de Shopie von Teschen se encuentra lograda, sí consigue reflejar esos dilemas que la aquejan centrados en estar prometida a un hombre al cual no ama por la obligación que le corresponde como parte de la realeza al ser Duquesa. La actuación de Rufus Sewell dio toda en el blanco, muchas veces un excelente trabajo en el papel antagónico es necesaria para que este estilo de películas consigan brillar, considero que este es uno de esos supuestos, el actor consigue, maravillosamente, personificar a ese ser déspota, egocéntrico, narcisista y despiadado, consigue la esencia de que el espectador quiera verlo destruido recibiendo lo que se merece así que ayuda por razones obvias en generar empatía sobre los demás personajes a medida de que va en aumento la rabia hacia el Príncipe Leopold y sus intenciones, además de que al ser la trama una lucha entre los diferentes poderes, pues agrega interés. Sin embargo, dentro de esa lucha tiene mayores actuaciones el Inspector Uhl, interpretado por Paul Giamatti, quien logra, de una manera sobresaliente, resaltar dentro del elenco por su maravilloso trabajo, por la credibilidad que le aporta al personaje.
The performances are undoubtedly outstanding, Edward Norton knows how to take advantage of the aura that should surround the character, namely mystery, wit, audacity, and that look of regret, which once everything is discovered, acquires greater relevance. The problems that develop around Jessica Biel in the role of Shopie von Teschen are successful, she does manage to reflect those dilemmas that afflict her, centered on being engaged to a man she does not love because of the obligation that corresponds to her as part of the royalty as a Duchess. Rufus Sewell's performance hit the mark, many times an excellent job in the antagonist role is necessary for this style of films to shine, I believe this is one of those assumptions, the actor manages, wonderfully, to personify that despot, self-centered, narcissistic and ruthless being, He gets the essence that the viewer wants to see him destroyed getting what he deserves so it helps for obvious reasons in generating empathy for the other characters as it is increasing anger towards Prince Leopold and his intentions, plus the plot being a struggle between the different powers, it adds interest. However, within this struggle, Inspector Uhl, played by Paul Giamatti, who manages, in an outstanding way, to stand out among the cast for his wonderful work, for the credibility he brings to the character.
El final es algo previsible, al menos en mi opinión, pero debo hacer énfasis en que para mí lo más importante acá más allá del final es el cómo se llega hasta allí, cada uno de los mínimos detalles que en definitiva ayudan para se consiga ese objetivo, eso es lo interesante, en una progresión que aunque lenta en algunas partes, sus momentos cumbre son lo suficientemente entretenidos para enganchar y envolverte es la sensación de misterio por descubrir. En fin, tampoco voy a mentir diciendo que es de las mejores producciones que he visto porque aunque con un resultado logrado hay mejores dentro de este mismo género, pero eso no implica que no tenga sus puntos positivos que merezcan ser resaltados. Si a calificaciones vamos, incluso le podría dar un siete de diez sin ninguna pena, quizás hasta un punto adicional porque me encantó demasiado toda la fotografía y el vestuario que usaron para la cinematografía.
The ending is somewhat predictable, at least in my opinion, but I must emphasize that for me the most important thing here beyond the ending is how you get there, each of the smallest details that ultimately help to achieve that goal, that's what's interesting, in a progression that although slow in some parts, its peak moments are entertaining enough to hook and wrap you is the feeling of mystery to be discovered. Anyway, I'm not going to lie saying that it is one of the best productions I've seen because although with a successful result there are better within this same genre, but that does not imply that it does not have its positive points that deserve to be highlighted. If we go to qualifications, I could even give it a seven out of ten without any shame, maybe even an extra point because I loved too much all the photography and costumes used for cinematography.
