The year was 1986 and like most years a few things happened: A nuclear power station in Chernobyl exploded, the Challenger space shuttle exploded killing all on board, Halley's Comet reached its closest point to the Earth, the Soviet Union launched the MIR space station, the first case of Mad Cow Disease (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) is reported, Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight world champion in history, the Swedish Prime Minister is murdered and Argentina won the World Cup...
...It was also the year some of the most iconic movies were released: Aliens, Platoon and Top Gun. Legit, legit and legit in my estimation, all three!
I was sixteen in 1986, had just started driving, had purchased my first car and was still in school studying hard very little. It was also the year I first cut a day of school...And why? Well, to see Top Gun of course!

We were on a field trip to the Reserve Bank in the city with my Economics teacher and somehow me and a few friends got separated and ended up at the movies instead. I really don't know how that happened. Anyway, I loved that movie! Yes I know, it's a bit cheesy and predictable but I didn't care. To be honest, now, at 49 years old, I still don't care! It's a great movie. im src
So, you can imagine my excitement when I heard Top Gun, Maverick, the second instalment, will release in 2020, complete with a much older, and wrinklier, Tom Cruise still flying fighter jets. I know I'm 49 but do you think I care? Fucking Top Gun Brah, what's not to like?! The good thing is I won't have to ditch school to go and see it! I might ditch work and take my girl on a sneaky work-day date instead though. Why the hell not?
I'm sure the plot is similar, if not the same, and the acting won't be much better although I don't really care about all the negatives, I've been waiting for this sequel since 1986! It does have Jennifer Connelly in it also so there's a definite upside. Anyway, I'm not sure what the release date is but I'll be there for sure.
I thought I'd share some original Top Gun lines with you considering many of you were probably not born when the movie came out. You may know some of these:
Maverick: "I feel the need ..." Goose: "... the need for speed!"
Iceman: "You can be my wingman any time." Maverick: "Bullshit! You can be mine."
Maverick - (Walking into a bar): "This is what I call a target-rich environment."
Maverick: "It's classified. I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."
Oh yeah, those boys and their hijinks huh?
So apparently Maverick (Cruise) is still only a Captain instead of a two-star Admiral after 30 years in the Navy which probably has something to do with his poor attitude...The rest of the plot probably revolves around a love-interest, some residual emotional turmoil from the past, some highs, a low, then ultimate success all punctuated by some amazing flying sequences. Sounds legit and I'll be going to see it.
The trailer is below and below that the original movie trailer from 1986.
