Welcome, gods and goddesses of Olympus!

This TV show was recommended to me by (again) my best friend and bless the day I started watching it as, along with Switched at birth and Vikings, it is in the top of my favorite TV shows.

The Magicians stars Quentin, a depressed young man in love with his best friend Julia and, moreover, obsessed with a saga of fantastic children's books. It is then that he suddenly appears at, apparently, a university where he has to take a test together with Julia. Little did he know that, in reality, said university is magical and that he possessed magic in himself until the moment of the final test, where he passes and is accepted, unlike Julia.

This may sound familiar to Harry Potter but the only thing it really resembles is the degree to which it expands the world of magic (and I would even go so far as to say that this TV show goes further), as The Magicians is a more realistic, raw and adult version of J.K Rowling's saga.

The main difference that achieves this effect is the age range of its protagonists, all are young adults, some with more experience in the world of magic and others as ignorant about it as Quentin; and, of course, the college environment makes this series completely different from the typical teen series set in high schools.

The magnificent thing in The Magicians is how they address all the aspects we are interested in knowing about magic, for example, where it comes from or what its limits are.

Not only will we see what magic taught at the university is like, but also the existence of a supposedly fictional world, Fillory, which has its own government, ecosystem and fantastic creatures. We will even go beyond, into different dimensions and, as if that were not enough, we will get to know the underworld with a more organized aspect of the chaos we imagine.

I can't forget to mention that the core and essence of The Magicians are its characters, all different and with different ambitions. We first have Queen, someone I can relate to, as the idea that the magic he has read about for so long is a real thing and he can be a part of it is the best thing that has happened to him in his depressing life. It is the very existence of magic and Brakebills, the one and only reason to leave behind a world that did not treat him kindly.

Then we will see the opposite in Julia, a party girl who, after discovering magic and being rejected and alienated from it, falls into a state of depression and misery. With her, we will discover the dark side of magic for those also marginalized and isolated.

In every group, the genius, the Hermione if we want to look for similarities with Harry Potter, could not be missing. In The Magicians, that role belongs to Alice, marked by the sacrifice and death of her older brother, whom she tries to bring back to life.

If we're going to talk about iconic couples, the duo of Margo and Elliot can't be missed. They are everyone's favorite pair, their scenes and interactions were always a soothing to my soul. They both have their bittersweet pasts that has made them lean on each other and exclude others. Many times the state of their relationship controlled my emotional stability, as they were not all the time the perfect pair.

The Magicians deals with more adult and raw themes throughout its seasons such as, for example, sexual abuse and both the physical and emotional repercussions it produces on the characters it involves.

I was shocked with The Magicians especially with regard to the deaths of the characters because, as much as they are our protagonists, it doesn't free them from their fragile condition as human beings. None of them are safe and it's something we will learn through tears and broken hearts. There was one death in particular that completely shattered my soul and there, crying with a towel by my side for more than a day, when I realized that this TV show meant more to me than any other.

I encourage you to watch The Magicians, it has 5 seasons, in its first having only 13 episodes and I can assure you it won't be enough.

Esta serie me fue recomendada por (nuevamente) mi mejor amiga y bendito sea el día en que la empecé a ver pues, junto a Switched at birth y Vikings, se encuentra en el top de mi series favoritas

The Magicians tiene como protagonista a Quentin, un joven depresivo enamorado de su mejor amiga Julia y, además, obsesionado con un saga de libros fantásticos para niños. Es después que aparece de repente en, aparentemente, una universidad en la que debe presentar una prueba junto con Julia. Poco sabía él que, en realidad, dicha universidad es mágica y que él poseía magia en sí mismo hasta el momento de la prueba final, donde aprueba y es aceptado, a diferencia de Julia.

Esto podrá resultarles familiar a Harry Potter pero la verdad en lo único que se parece es en el grado de expansión del mundo de la magia (e incluso me atrevo a decir que esta serie va más allá), pues The Magicians es una versión más realista, cruda y adulta que la saga de J.K Rowling.

La diferencia principal que logra este efecto es el rango de edad de sus protagonistas, todos son adultos jóvenes, algunos con más experiencia en el mundo de la magia y otros tan ignorantes al respecto como Quentin; y, por supuesto, el ambiente universitario hace de esta serie completamente diferente a las típicas series de adolescentes ubicadas en secundarias.

Lo magnífico en The Magicians es cómo abordan todos los aspectos que nos interesa saber de la magia, por ejemplo, de dónde proviene o cuáles son sus límites.

No solo veremos cómo es la magia enseñada en la universidad, sino también la existencia de un mundo supuestamente ficticio, Fillory, que tiene su propio gobierno, ecosistema y criaturas fantásticas. Incluso iremos más allá, hacia diferentes dimensiones y, como si fuera poco, conoceremos el inframundo con un aspecto más organizado del caos que nos imaginamos.

No puedo olvidar mencionar que el núcleo y esencia de The Magicians son sus personajes, todos diferentes y con ambiciones distintas. Tenemos primero a Queen, alguien con quien me identifico, pues la idea de que la magia por la que ha leído por tanto tiempo sea algo real y pueda ser parte de ello es lo mejor que le ha pasado en su deprimente vida. Es la existencia misma de la magia y de Brakebills, la única y principal razón para dejar atrás un mundo que no lo trató con amabilidad.

Después veremos lo opuesto en Julia, una chica fiestera que, luego de descubrir la magia y ser rechazada y alejada de la misma, cae en un estado de depresión y miseria. Con ella, descubriremos el lado oscuro de la magia para aquellos también marginados y aislados.

En todo grupo no podía faltar la genio, la Hermione si queremos buscar similitudes con Harry Potter. En The Magicians, ese papel le pertenece a Alice, marcada por el sacrificio y muerte de su hermano mayor y al que intenta traer a la vida.

Si vamos a hablar de parejas icónicas, el dúo de Margo y Elliot no puede faltar. Son el par favorito de todos, sus escenas e interacciones siempre fueron un alivio para mi alma. Ambos tienen sus pasados agridulces que les ha hecho apoyarse en el otro y excluir a los demás. Muchas veces el estado de su relación controló mi estabilidad emocional, pues no todo el tiempo eran el par perfecto.

The Magicians trata temas más adultos y crudos a lo largo de sus temporadas como, por ejemplo, el abuso sexual y las repercusiones tanto físicas como emocionales que produce en los personajes que involucra.

Quedé sorprendida con The Magicians especialmente con respecto a las muertes de los personajes porque, por más que sean nuestros protagonistas, eso no los libera de su condición frágil como seres humanos. Ninguno está a salvo y es algo que aprenderemos con lágrimas y corazones rotos. Hubo una muerte en particular que me destrozó el alma por completo y ahí, llorando con una toalla al lado por más de un día, cuando me di cuenta que esta serie significaba para mí más que cualquier otra.

Les ánimo a ver esta serie, cuenta con 5 temporadas, en su primera teniendo solo 13 episodios y te puedo asegurar que no será suficiente.
