  1. The Magicians - My Latest Netflix Binge@the-bitcoin-dood1532d

I just finished The Magicians on Netflix and what a wild ride. I really enjoyed this one a lot! This should be a spoiler free review with an overview of the plot and cast. This is a five season comedic fantasy series with a really colorful cast of characters. Think Harry Potter and Hogwarts grows up goes to college and discovers Narnia.

    MV5BYTU3ZWRmNDktMDQ0My00OGQzLTkzMzktOTVjZjUzMzVmNjNmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTkxNjUyNQ@@.V1.jpg

Whimsy is a theme in this series. As whimsical as it is though, this is NOT for children. There is drug use, sexual content, rape, suicide and a long list of other warnings before each episode. Surprisingly, the subject matter is action filled and absolutely hysterical at times.

The basic plot is centered around Brakebills University. Think Hogwarts but college and hidden in the middle of New York City. Students are selected to join the college based on their magickal abilities. Quentin is our main protagonist. He's a bit of a shy nerd and obsessed with children's books about a place named Fillory. Fillory is like a Narnia type place. While studying at magick school he discovers that Fillory is indeed real and that he and several of his friends must save this magickal kingdom from an evil monster.

I have to admit, I usually don't like when a franchise rips off the best parts of different movies and books and then remixes them into it's own story. That's a lot of what they did here. This is an adult version of Harry Potter, meets Narnia, meets Alice In Wonderland, meets every other fantasy book you've ever read throughout your life. But that is part of what makes this series so excellent. They did it well.

The cast and characters really make this work. It's great fantasy, a great plot and the colorful cast of characters make it entertaining and incredibly fun to watch. On top of that, they rip off almost every movie ever written from Star Wars to Die Hard and kind of poke fun at it in the script. In other words, they did it purposely and it works for this show.

As the series progresses the focus slowly slips away from Quentin Coldwater the main character and the light shines more on his group of magickal freinds at Brakebills University who join in on his quest to save Fillory from the evil monster.

When I first started watching this it's obvious that the theme has a "WOKE" agenda. It's hard to miss and gets stronger as the series progresses. Normally that annoys the hell out of me, but this cast of actors really made it work and it just fits. Many of the main characters are openly gay. This is probably the first series I've seen with openly gay main characters that play the hero. It worked! Whether you're gay, straight, or somewhere in between, you can't help but fall in love with the characters of this show.

If there's such a thing as "toxic masculinity" then the character of Margot Hanson just oozes "toxic feminity". She's an obnoxious, foul mouthed, co-ed with a very girl power vibe to her. Normally I love characters like hers but for some reason I found her annoying as hell. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it and it was driving me nuts. I wanted to like her so badly, and her role was actually really fun. Then with one facial expression it hit me like a ton of bricks. She reminded me of the vice president Kamala Harris. God that woman rubs me the wrong way. Once I realized she reminded me of someone I couldn't stand, I started to like her character again 🤣

Many of the episodes also have an underlying theme of equality and social justice. Seriously though, it works with this series. This show is fantasy, but it's also a really funny comedy. I found several parts absolutely hysterical and other parts extremely thought provoking.

With a name like The Magicians the series pokes light fun of the gods. Hades and Persephone make an appearance along with a few others. The gods of Fillory are two Pan like deities who are siblings and don't get along. Their names are Ember and Umber. Ember uses Fillory like a TV show for his amusement.

In the greater scheme of things, nothing is really off limits with this series. Somehow they make this all work. It's comedy, it's sci-fi, it's drama with elements of action and love. Somehow they package this into a fun fantasy series that actually works.

I also liked some of the underlying themes of the different episodes. Many of the plots seemed like they mirrored issues we face in real life. As silly and comical as the series was, much of the content was thought provoking.

One of the things I didn't like is somewhere around the third season they thought it would be fun to add musical elements into the script. That was really annoying! I hate musicals. It was almost a deal breaker for me, but I wanted to see how the series ended. I just fast forwarded through the musical sequences. This did continue into the fourth season, and a little into the fifth season.

Anyway, if you like your fantasy and adventure remixed with elements of pop culture and woke politics you'll probably enjoy this! I really couldn't stop watching this one.

  2. The Magicians: The Harry Potter we always wanted to see@galistea1678d

Welcome, gods and goddesses of Olympus!

This TV show was recommended to me by (again) my best friend and bless the day I started watching it as, along with Switched at birth and Vikings, it is in the top of my favorite TV shows.

    GIF 21-11-2021 10-36-47 p.m..gif

The Magicians stars Quentin, a depressed young man in love with his best friend Julia and, moreover, obsessed with a saga of fantastic children's books. It is then that he suddenly appears at, apparently, a university where he has to take a test together with Julia. Little did he know that, in reality, said university is magical and that he possessed magic in himself until the moment of the final test, where he passes and is accepted, unlike Julia.

    Image9.png

    GIF 21-11-2021 10-37-40 p.m..gif

This may sound familiar to Harry Potter but the only thing it really resembles is the degree to which it expands the world of magic (and I would even go so far as to say that this TV show goes further), as The Magicians is a more realistic, raw and adult version of J.K Rowling's saga.

    Image7.png

The main difference that achieves this effect is the age range of its protagonists, all are young adults, some with more experience in the world of magic and others as ignorant about it as Quentin; and, of course, the college environment makes this series completely different from the typical teen series set in high schools.

    Image8.png

The magnificent thing in The Magicians is how they address all the aspects we are interested in knowing about magic, for example, where it comes from or what its limits are.

Not only will we see what magic taught at the university is like, but also the existence of a supposedly fictional world, Fillory, which has its own government, ecosystem and fantastic creatures. We will even go beyond, into different dimensions and, as if that were not enough, we will get to know the underworld with a more organized aspect of the chaos we imagine.

    .

I can't forget to mention that the core and essence of The Magicians are its characters, all different and with different ambitions. We first have Queen, someone I can relate to, as the idea that the magic he has read about for so long is a real thing and he can be a part of it is the best thing that has happened to him in his depressing life. It is the very existence of magic and Brakebills, the one and only reason to leave behind a world that did not treat him kindly.

    Image3.png

Then we will see the opposite in Julia, a party girl who, after discovering magic and being rejected and alienated from it, falls into a state of depression and misery. With her, we will discover the dark side of magic for those also marginalized and isolated.

    Image6.png

In every group, the genius, the Hermione if we want to look for similarities with Harry Potter, could not be missing. In The Magicians, that role belongs to Alice, marked by the sacrifice and death of her older brother, whom she tries to bring back to life.

    Image11.png

We will also witness the birth of a couple, two bitter and rough characters, Kady, daughter of a witch and Penny, a traveler, that is, a person capable of transporting himself anywhere (yes, also dimensions).

    Image4.png

    .

If we're going to talk about iconic couples, the duo of Margo and Elliot can't be missed. They are everyone's favorite pair, their scenes and interactions were always a soothing to my soul. They both have their bittersweet pasts that has made them lean on each other and exclude others. Many times the state of their relationship controlled my emotional stability, as they were not all the time the perfect pair.

    GIF 21-11-2021 10-53-43 p.m..gif

The Magicians deals with more adult and raw themes throughout its seasons such as, for example, sexual abuse and both the physical and emotional repercussions it produces on the characters it involves.

    Image1.png

I was shocked with The Magicians especially with regard to the deaths of the characters because, as much as they are our protagonists, it doesn't free them from their fragile condition as human beings. None of them are safe and it's something we will learn through tears and broken hearts. There was one death in particular that completely shattered my soul and there, crying with a towel by my side for more than a day, when I realized that this TV show meant more to me than any other.

    GIF 21-11-2021 11-23-38 p.m..gif

I encourage you to watch The Magicians, it has 5 seasons, in its first having only 13 episodes and I can assure you it won't be enough.

The Magicians has a graphic scene of sexual abuse, discussions of pedophilia, mentions of suicide and sexual scenes. For more information, please review the series' content warnings.

Ok, I was a lot late on this one.

This is my first from the SYFY cable network,

So I'm yet to know how their TV shows go.

But hey, this is indeed a good show.

I saw the pilot of the first season last night, after Altered Carbon.

    And wow, it was awesome.

It is currently in its third season.

I would be continuing the show till I catch up.

    Hopefully they don't disappoint me.
