Still going through my watchlist with quite a lot of movies, I came across Behind the Scenes, and watching through from the start of the end gave something beyond the usual family drama because I got so hooked while watching, especially the question that came to my mind, which says, 'When no one is watching, who are you?'
The movie started with a family which Aderiike, also known as Ronky Fella, was part of. I'll say she's the most successful amongst her siblings because she controls a big real estate firm, and she is always kind to everyone that they run to her when they need help. But as I continued watching, I started noticing that the real issue wasn't that Aderonke wasn't that generous, but it was that all the people she surrounded herself with are used to asking her for help, and they have failed to see what it was costing her.
And seeing through the experience of Aderonke, I can see through what actually happens in many houses and families. Once people sense that you are doing okay, they suddenly depend on you because you are successful. Some scenes made her cheerful; giving to others looks admirable in the beginning, but as I continued watching, I observed that despite all her giving, no one actually asked if she's doing fine herself. And I also like how the movie didn't make her sickness, suffering and plans something that was dramatic at first. It was coming up in a very slow way through the little things, the assumption, the frequent asking and demanding and the way those around her took her kindness as something she must do by force.
What I can't help but to pay very close attention to was the type of relationship that was going on between Aderonke, her friends and the people she calls family. Because those people didn't see themselves like they were taking advantage of her, because some of them have automatically seen themselves like she must give them out of their success and provide for their needs. And me watching through all that, I was a bit uncomfortable with their sense of entitlement. Because when someone betrays us, it doesn't come from those who openly dislike us; it always comes from people within, those who we love but have become too addicted and comfortable with what they get from us. That is one of the things that happened while I was watching which led to family conflict.
On the other hand, some characters, like Aderonke's younger brother, Adewale, also caught my interest because his relationship added another dimension to the whole movie in a way that he was constantly living a flashy life. And at the same time, he was a bit entitled because his wife is always demanding, which made me think about what people actually want from Aderonke.
I also liked all the other characters that were used, especially Aderonkes' maids, who took care of her and her kids and did what the other family members were unable to do. Because Aderonke's elder sister really showed her selfish side by taking charge of her properties and mistreating her kids after she faked her death to see who is real in her family.
Some scenes were just too hilarious after some of the secrets of the family members and friends were revealed and they didn't feel remorse about it at first. But then, everything that happened really gave this real-life family vibes of comedy and some uncomfortable family behaviours too.
And at the same time, I really got the message they passed across in this movie. And there were moments when some scenes had to explain what I had already understood, and some of the characters could have done a much better job. And I like how they made it all and majorly about family dramas and a bit of some unexpected things some friends can do behind their backs while the laugh is to our face.
Still, I got to realise that there's a big difference between being loved genuinely and being needed. Aderonke has a lot of people around her, but she always feels lonely when she needs them even though she's always there for them. And that is because they are all around her because of what they can get from her.
I ultimately enjoyed this movie because it looks very ordinary, yet has a very loud weight of being the person everyone runs to and what finally happened when that person is no longer there. The subject of this movie is something I'll say happens in real life, because it is emotional and also funny. If you haven't seen this movie, I'll recommend it for you because you will get to see what people will say and how they will react and treat you when you stop giving them things they once had access to.
