A Simple Plan (film): Great movie you probably haven't seen

Review by @gooddream · 2858d · of A Simple Plan

Bill Paxton has a lot of great movies out there that most people haven't seen and this is a good thing if you have a lot of time on your hands. Unfortunately, Bill died recently and people are starting to talk about the movies he was in that are not Twister.

Hank Mitchell (Paxton) discovers a crashed airplane in Minnesota that contains four million dollars one day in his relatively mundane life. Rather than turn the cash is he decides to pretend as though it was never found and thus begins a horrible tragedy that eventually devours what was previously his happy (albeit boring) life.

There are various ideas presented by Hank's family members that he lets in on the secret about how the influx of cash should be handled but just like any secret, word travels. This results in introducing multiple other people into the equation that shouldn't be involved in this very secretive problem to begin with.

While Paxton is great in this film, the real star of the entire ordeal is Billy Bob Thornton, who plays the brother of Paxton named "Jacob," who is a good guy but lacks any sort of real social skills. Kind at heart, yet quite simple; Jacob is such a heart-touching character and I feel that Billy Bob truly deserved his Oscar nomination for the portrayal.

I don't want to spoil the film but the reason that you should definitely see this film is because it is relatable. If any of us found ourselves in this same situation there is a really good chance that good people (and I like to believe I am that) could change in the face of immense wealth all of a sudden literally dropping in front of us.

If you have any sort of attachment to the Midwest in USA you may have an extra chance to be able to relate to the characters in this movie. I am from that part of the states and I can say without question, that the actors involved did a very good job displaying what life is like in what is generally regarded as a less-than-glamorous part of the States.

watch this movie; you will not regret it

Great movie! Completely agree with you about Billy Bob playing Jacob. He completely MADE this movie, although Paxton held the plan together until he had no choice left but to do what he did. Looking back on it, this might have been the only time I can remember Gary Cole playing a bad guy. Good review. 👍

I love these recommendations, I have not seen this film, but the theme of the film catches my attention. I'll write it down in my notebook.

It would seem that something like that the viewer could see in a lot of films that were devoted to the robbery of banks - Reservoir Dogs, The Ladykillers and in films where the characters found an unlimited amount of money and decided to appropriate it to themselves - Fargo, No Country For Old Men ", so how does this film differ from its fellow members in the genre? Well, I'll start with the fact that this movie was shot quite plausibly, which is a rarity for a criminal thriller. In other words, dogs eating diamonds, and several groups of criminals who came to rob one and the same bookstore in the film, do not, and therefore what is happening in the picture causes a much stronger response in the heart of the viewer. The next point of the program are the characters themselves, whose characters undergo a kind of metamorphosis and those characters who caused negative emotions at the beginning of the film will start to cause pity and sympathy while on all sides, positive and correct characters will throw off the masks of good-fellows and appear before the spectator greedy and selfish people, that deserve all kinds of censure ... or not? After all, money acts on people like a red rag on a bull and the lowest desires creep out that purulents, causing honest and respectable people to commit monstrous acts, which this film perfectly demonstrates. In fact, there is much more to be said about the film. You can discuss the fact that the village fool is a much smarter and shrewd person than his brother who graduated from college. One could talk about the father of the protagonists, who died long before the beginning of the picture, but who was the most kind and correct character in this story. You can remember the excellent camera work, which suggests the thought of "Fargo", which was released three years before the film under review. There is much more to say, but it's much easier and better if you watch this movie again, believe it indeed.

Hey thanks for the review on this one. Looks like a really interesting flick! I'll have to line it up on facebook to watch with the wife.

I love Billy Bob too. My wife is from England and when she first came to America someone showed her the movie Slingblade. Her reaction was that it was the worst, most unbelievable film she had ever seen. Then she ended up living in Oklahoma for a while and completely changed her perspective.

A Simple Plan is surely not a simple film, as some most people thought it would be. The point is not how simple life is, rather how disturbingly wrong and out of control situations can get. This film takes you to the great depths of human greed, frailty, and desperation. It is amazing how multiple evil deeds one can rationalize by just believing "and then it will all be over." A Simple Plan is a great character study which makes you think of what you would do in the same situation. At what point would you draw the line? How far would you go to keep millions of dollars all to yourself? The excellent photography adds to the sense of desperation that permeates the whole film. The vast, snowbound landscape is the perfect image for the feelings the main characters have for their station in life: cold, silent, lifeless, unending, and unrelenting.

Don't see this movie unless you are ready to see a group of people reach the end of their rope and make a series of life-changing decisions.

Hey @gooddream, I have never seen you give a film a rating greater than 8 before, even the ones you describe as 'really good'.

I haven't watched it and may not have the time but am memorizing the title just incase
