Baki (Netflix Anime) - I'll keep watching for now

Review by @gooddream · 2752d · of Baki the Grappler

So due to a random decision that Netflix made for me I ended up with a bunch of Anime suggestions on my homepage or whatever it is called. I am not a fan of Anime (yet) I mean, i don't seek it out. I have no idea why Netflix made this choice for me. I sincerely hope that it wasn't because I recently wrote the article about Final Fantasy: Advent Children because I don't like the idea of that sort of spying, even if it is helpful. Anyway, this is about Baki.

BAKI

There isn't much I can possibly spoil about this because I don't yet know much about it. However, so far I am reasonably entertained because the art is good and I like the way that the story is told in snippets, kind of like a comic book, in order to keep things moving very quickly. We are introduced to "Baki" who is in high school and there is some sort of affliction that is affecting everyone around him but for whatever reason it doesn't affect him. It isn't explained and then all of a sudden it is gone - which was strange but whatever. We then see Baki in the principal's office to meet a VIP visitor who is someone who is famous for arranging underground arena fights of some sort. I can kind of see where this is going.

This visitor explains to Baki stories about criminals from all over the planet who have recently broken free from their cells with relative ease. A few of them were actually given the death penalty and both a hanging, and the electric chair were applied (to 2 separate people) and they both survived and then broke out of prison (this isn't a spoiler, it is quite evident this is going to happen in the show.)

The action is pretty gruesome and bloody and the fact that people are fluent in Japanese all over the world is a lot of fun. I'm not gonna get hung up on that, it's Anime after all. Some of the translation work is pretty funny because it almost makes sense. You need to read between the lines during a few of the encounters.

I think i will continue to watch this series because it really is easy to follow since they really keep things moving at a fast pace.

I think people who have very little patience for long, drawn out story-lines and want things to just get moving will probably appreciate this show. People who don't like animated stuff or reading subtitles might not like it. I haven't watched enough to really rate this show but so far, I am intrigued and can recommend at least giving it a look.

Is it something that my young ones can watch? I rarely do anime too but I was introduced to Spirited Away last December via this platform and I loved it a lot. Though I too don't seek it, I would appreciate finding a good one like that one. If you say this is a good one then I guess I am watching Baki :D

I'll write it down on my list, keep us updated. I think I have not seen anime for a long time, but recently I received some recommendations, and I think I will soon give this kind of products a chance too.

Awesome! And your second point, reading subtitles, at first it is hard, but I got used to it. I've watch some Spanish series etc. and it is okay. Japanese is something else, will see how it goes.
