Blood Diamond: DiCaprio's best

Review by @gooddream · 2943d · of Blood Diamond

Yeah, yeah, i know he won the Oscar for The Revenant but that is not his best film. To be honest I really don't think he would have won that one if it weren't for lobbying of the Academy and the fact that there weren't a lot of really good movies that year. However, this is about Blood Diamond, and I believe it is not just one of his best, but one of THE best.

The movie takes place in Western Africa, mostly in Sierra Leone. The country has erupted into civil was and the "RUF" insurgents have created slaves out of the population in order to continue their war efforts. I don't know if this is presented in an accurate manor, but the RUF seem to be terrorizing the population into compliance through fear, rather than liberating them from a tyrannical government.

Dicaprio's character Danny Archer is a gun-runner, a bit of a selfish scumbag that has no qualms about what the weapons he supplies are being used for. He meets Soloman Vandy (Dijmon Hansou) as they both just happen to be locked up in the same holding cell. Danny learns that Soloman has access to a massive diamond and he attempts to befriend Soloman purely for the sake of getting the stone from him.

Soloman denies the existance of the stone but under duress when RUF is invading the city, Archer, who is a survivalist with access to weapons convinces Vandy that he will give Danny the stone provided he helps him rescue his family who he was seperated from earlier on in the film.

They end up getting connected with Jenner Connoly's character, who has special press access because she is an investigative reporter and the 3 of them together, use one another to achieve their own ends.

I dont' want to spoil the film but here is the reasons I think the movie is great and that if Leo was ever going to win an award it should have been for this.

  • it is based on real events. All the characters are fake but the diamond conflicts of West Africa are / were a very real thing
  • According to friends of mine that come from modern day Zimbabwe, DiCaprio's accent is spot on. He must have practiced for a long time to accomplish that
  • generally speaking, i don't find Dicaprio believable as an adult. I am pretty big critic of his and i catch a bunch of flack for that from other people. However, he was very good in this.
  • there are no dull moments
  • there is a sound (and true) message inside the film
  • while it is somewhat predictable in a Hollywood sense, it does have some surprises.

Overall, I give this film an 8.5 / 10 . I don't know how they could have improved it because it is pretty polished, it just isn't a perfect film. Close but not quite.

haven't watched it. Living in Africa I have found a lot of weak films set in Africa and tend to dodge them. Still don't know if I can watch it. I liked Wolf on Wall Street so don't hate him as an actor.

I think DiCaprio is over-rated both as an actor and as a human being, but if this film is as good as you say it is, I will definitely give it a look. I have been interested in the corrupt, horrific diamond business for a long time, and it is not a topic that gets that much play in the western press, which is a shame. These diamond works are far worse than Indonesian and Vietnamese sweat shops, and many, many people die digging diamonds. It's past time that the world cracked down on the whole diamond business.

Perhaps these new lab/factory made diamonds will swamp the market and drive down the price for diamonds so far that these diamond works are closed, PERMANENTLY.

Honestly I haven't saw this movie even it have been out there for a long time, but I always heard big praises. Thanks for the review, I didn't read a lot because I want to see it someday

The movie is attached with emotion and sacrifice. But where they didn't get right was using closed to refined diamond when Soloman Vandy pick it up from the water. And the son joining the rebel and wanting to kill the father. Dicaprio turned a green leaf and had to sacrifice his life to ensure the truth be known to the world through the journalist

I get so emotional whenever i see that movie.

OMG- These powerful performances by the 2 greatest actors in the world! When Salomon Vandy was carrying Leo on the mountain & the beat of the music that's playing was aaaaawwwwwwl! Goose bumps... SIMPLY AMAZING

This one i have seen, and when i say i have seen... means have seen more than 5 times. The movie keeps getting interesting no matter how often i see it. From the begining were those bad guys were asking if they wanted long or short sleeves and its isnt a tee shirt they wanted to give out... its a cutlass to the hand. The accent Leonardo use was really marvelous.

First I want to say I went into this movie with hopes of it being great but had heard numerous slams against the acting, mostly Leo's accent. Wow were they DEAD WRONG! The movie delivers everything it should have and more. I like going into a movie and being entertained and learning something at the same time, especially at the ridiculous costs of tickets now days. I must say the movie was graphic at times but I think it needed to be in order to get the point across so if you have trouble watching terrible things happen to people including children then I wouldn't recommend this movie. Kudos to Ed Zwick and everyone involved in making this wonderful film, it was a real treat to watch.
