  1. Blood Diamond (Review) - The incredible story of a man who does whatever it takes to keep his family safe [EN/ES]@fabian981293d

The love that a man can show to his family has no limits, even to the point of giving his life for his family....

These words are so true, since in many occasions a responsible man who loves his family very much cares about the welfare of his family, he keeps busy working to bring food and cover the necessary expenses of his family. But not only that, he also takes care of protecting them from dangers or being a good husband or father. But sadly that has been lost in today's society, where there are many fathers without responsibility who only seek fun, but do not face the consequences of bringing children into the world or also dull in vices while his family suffers many shortages. But a good man will always be concerned about taking care of his family, even if, as I mentioned at the beginning, he has to risk his life for his family. And that was one of the things that impressed me most about the story of Solomon Vandy in the 2006 film directed by Edward Zwick and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly and Djimon Hounsou.

Solomon and his family live quietly in their village in Sierra Leone, but their life changes when the civil war in the African country reaches Solomon's village and his life changes drastically. This was undoubtedly one of the best films that tells in detail the harsh reality of many people who lived that bloody confrontation between the RUF and government forces. But first let's talk a little about the plot.

The story of the movie blood diamonds is set in the late 90's, when the life of Solomon and his family changes radically after the RUF attacks his village killing many innocent people, Solomon manages to hide his family, but is caught by the RUF and as he is strong they take him to work in the diamond mines, which is how this rebel movement is financed to get weapons and drugs. Then enters the scene Danny Archer an arms smuggler or warlord, who sells weapons to the RUF in exchange for diamonds, but as his plan to smuggle diamonds is thwarted, he is imprisoned and has a large debt to pay.

Then Solomon while working finds a pink diamond, as big as it is valuable, but he is spotted by the RUF commander and when he is about to kill him to take the diamond the government forces appear and attack the mine killing innocents with soldiers. But Solomon manages to escape from the mine, but is imprisoned in the same prison where Danny Archer is. Even the RUF commander is also imprisoned in the same prison. Then this commander announces to all the prisoners that Solomon has in his possession a gigantic pink diamond and whoever kills him to take it away will get a large sum of money. Danny Archer hears this and feels that his problems will be solved thanks to this diamond, so he moves his influences in the government to get Solomon out of prison and to lead him to the diamond.

But Salomon doesn't want to give him anything, so Danny Archer convinces him to give him back his family if he gives him the diamond, and that's where Danny and Salomon start a great adventure in search of the family and the diamond, they go through dangers, dramatic and tense moments, as well as terrible decisions. Also, we see how in the movie the RUF takes Solomon's oldest son and uses him as a child soldier where they train him to kill left and right. So Solomon has a big job to do as a father to rescue his son from the RUF and bring his family back together to keep them safe.

In watching this movie I can highlight 3 things, the story of Solomon, the lives of the people in the midst of the war and the characters' own performance. So first let's talk about Solomon's Story. Although I wish it were so because it is very shocking, Solomon's story is not real, it is fictional, but it obviously represents a lot of what hundreds of parents in Sierra Leone went through during the civil war that took place between 91 and 2002. Many fathers, like Solomon, lived peacefully with their families doing their jobs, be it fishing, cattle raising or agriculture, but suddenly everything changed when the RUF and the government of Joseph Momoh engaged in a cruel war that took the lives of more than 200,000 people in addition to the displaced and those who were left with scars of war. Many parents like Solomon, were able to watch as the RUF took their children and forced them to do dreadful things, in the film you can see how the RUF indoctrinated the children, with drugs and imposed a mentality of superiority while forcing them to shoot people while blindfolded. Of course many of these child warriors were killed in clashes, and only a few were able to be rescued, albeit with clear scars and mental problems from this post-traumatic.

The lives of the people in the midst of the war: although it does not delve much into that part, you can see how many people suffered because of the war, thousands saw their families killed, others lost their homes and others lived in constant fear that it was their last day. And others lived with the hope of seeing again those who were separated and lost track of, it is heartbreaking to see this in the scene of the refugee camp.

And finally we have the acting of the characters, in this I highlight the amazing performance of Djimon Hounsou as Solomon, a man who risks everything for his family, also the performance of Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny a man who only cares about money at all costs and also makes sacrifices to get it, And finally we have the actress Jennifer Connelly who also makes an amazing performance as a reporter who wants to expose the corruption of blood diamonds, as many companies in Europe that buy these diamonds know that they come from Sierra Leone but do not care. So when these 3 stories come together in a movie with a very dramatic plot full of action, it is an amazing result that made it be nominated for 5 Oscars in 2007.

In conclusion, Blood Diamonds is more than a movie where people are killed in a war, it is a story with a real background that has had a great impact for more than 10 years, and that shows the barbarism that is committed for power and money. If you have already seen this movie, let me know your opinion in the comments and if you haven't seen it yet I recommend it, thank you very much for reading, see you in the next review :D

  2. Blood Diamond (2006)@minhajulmredol1867d

I love to watch movies but this month I am engaged with a tv-show and that's why I am not able to watch the other movies. No problem, I am loving that show too. So, last night my nephew came to a sleepover at my house with me. So we thought of watching a movie together and got in hand "Blood Diamond" where we will see Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly as the leading actors. This movie is directed by Edward Zwick based on the plot of the civil war in Sierra Leone.

    Blood Diamond (2006) - IMDb.jpeg Image source

In Sierra Leone, a civil war broke out between the government and a revolutionary group. That created great havoc in that continent. Djimon Hounsou as Solomon Vandy, his family became the victim of that havoc. From here Vandy was separated from his family and was taken to mine diamonds which financed the expenses of that revolutionary group. His family fled from that place to save their lives. On the other hand, we got to see DiCaprio as Danny Archer, working as a smuggler. He smuggles weapons to that revolutionary group in exchange for those diamonds and Jennifer Connelly appears as a journalist.

That revolutionary group takes young boys and trains them to be their soldiers and the son of Soloman was also taken away to train him as one of them. On seeing those scenes I remembered another movie named "Cidade de deus-City of God". The cinematography in both films was close enough and those black young boys taking the weapons and killing the mass people gave the same vibe to me.

The story begins with a big piece of pink diamond, the biggest diamond so far which was found by Solomon Vandy while working there and he hid it somewhere before being taken away by the government forces. Danny learned that somehow and became eager to find that with the help of Solomon. And Jennifer's role as a journalist was to write an article about all the diamond smuggling there. So throughout the whole movie these three were helping and completing one another to gain their objectives. Solomon was to find and get reunited with his family, Danny was in the hope to get that diamond and leave that continent for a better life and Maddy(Jennifer) solve the mystery of these diamonds. The movie was full of action, thrill, and love. Love for the family, love for the son from a father. That moment when Solomon was saying that his son is a good student and he will be a doctor, that scene is still visible before my eyes.

In most of DiCaprio's movies I get to see some amazing endings. This one also stood with such one. I wasn’t able to guess anything of that sort would happen and it could end in such a beautiful way. Whatever, I enjoy these unpredictable things the most while watching thriller movies. So overall it was a great one to watch and I loved it a lot. I would like to rate it 8 out of 10.

  3. Blood Diamond: DiCaprio's best@gooddream2943d

Yeah, yeah, i know he won the Oscar for The Revenant but that is not his best film. To be honest I really don't think he would have won that one if it weren't for lobbying of the Academy and the fact that there weren't a lot of really good movies that year. However, this is about Blood Diamond, and I believe it is not just one of his best, but one of THE best.

    382674.jpg

The movie takes place in Western Africa, mostly in Sierra Leone. The country has erupted into civil was and the "RUF" insurgents have created slaves out of the population in order to continue their war efforts. I don't know if this is presented in an accurate manor, but the RUF seem to be terrorizing the population into compliance through fear, rather than liberating them from a tyrannical government.

Dicaprio's character Danny Archer is a gun-runner, a bit of a selfish scumbag that has no qualms about what the weapons he supplies are being used for. He meets Soloman Vandy (Dijmon Hansou) as they both just happen to be locked up in the same holding cell. Danny learns that Soloman has access to a massive diamond and he attempts to befriend Soloman purely for the sake of getting the stone from him.

    blood-diamond-wallpaper-16.jpg

Soloman denies the existance of the stone but under duress when RUF is invading the city, Archer, who is a survivalist with access to weapons convinces Vandy that he will give Danny the stone provided he helps him rescue his family who he was seperated from earlier on in the film.

They end up getting connected with Jenner Connoly's character, who has special press access because she is an investigative reporter and the 3 of them together, use one another to achieve their own ends.

I dont' want to spoil the film but here is the reasons I think the movie is great and that if Leo was ever going to win an award it should have been for this.

    • it is based on real events. All the characters are fake but the diamond conflicts of West Africa are / were a very real thing
    • According to friends of mine that come from modern day Zimbabwe, DiCaprio's accent is spot on. He must have practiced for a long time to accomplish that
    • generally speaking, i don't find Dicaprio believable as an adult. I am pretty big critic of his and i catch a bunch of flack for that from other people. However, he was very good in this.
    • there are no dull moments
    • there is a sound (and true) message inside the film
    • while it is somewhat predictable in a Hollywood sense, it does have some surprises.

Overall, I give this film an 8.5 / 10 . I don't know how they could have improved it because it is pretty polished, it just isn't a perfect film. Close but not quite.
