Quantum Leap: Some things are better left in the past

Review by @gooddream · 2954d · of Quantum Leap

Like many nerds, I had incredible memories of this ground-breaking series starring Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell as his (most of the time) hologram assistant that has a wonderful handheld computer named Ziggy.

The series lasted for 5 seasons starting in the late 80's and the story goes like this: Sam Beckett (Bakula) is a physicist who is able to travel through space and time and inhabits the bodies of other people in an effort to correct certain "mistakes" in history. Most of the time these events are fictional but apprently we learned nothing from "Back to the Future" about not altering history because of the ramifications it can have on other future events.

The concept is fantastic because well, who wouldn't want to be able to do this? Some superfanboi out there might need to set me straight on this but i want to say that Sam was not able to choose where (or when) they would be going, or what they will be doing and it was completely random where Beckett would end up. In one of my favorite episodes he actually ends up in his own body in his past trying to prevent his own father's death.

Now here come the bad news: I recently revisited this series thinking that I was going to be in for a wonderful blast-from-the-past marathon binge watch. I only lasted a few episodes because in my opinion, this series has staled with time. I just don't find it entertaining by today's standards. Did I change? Did the times change (obviously, yes,) was the show not that great to begin with and we simply didn't have much else to watch? This last one is unlikely because they did win a lot of awards including Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.

Quantum-Leap-Good-Morning-.png and of course he was frequently involved in some sort of romance

But after attempting this I actually abandoned my plans to go back and re watch the A-Team and Magnum P.I. because I was afraid i would taint those memories as well. Sometimes I think it is better to relive some things just inside your head because going back can sometimes result in "I actually liked this?" - type moments.

I am not alone in this thinking but I am sure there are many people out there that are going to disagree with me and that is fine.

If you don't even know what it is here is an advertisement for the DVD's... and no, i am not trying to sell you DVD's (does anyone use DVD anymore?)

What do you think? do you agree with me? Do you think I am wrong? As always, I welcome your comments.

Did you start from the beginning? If so that might be the problem, other than the initial set up the pilot episode sucks. I've rewatched various episodes over the years, and like any of those story of the week series sometimes you end up with a bad episode, but equally you can get some magnificent ones.

I've also rewatched most of A-Team in the last year, and again there are some lame episodes including the pilot. If you're going to start with any episode go with S1 Ep3: Pros and Cons, it'll remind you exactly why you loved the show in the first place.

I liked Quantum Leap back in the day, but I sure hope they won't remake it....like they are trying to do with Magnum P.I. :(

I watched this show when I was a kid but I've never plan to come back to it someday as you did, maybe is the best. But I have to tell that some years ago I passed some time viewing some retro series on tcm and I enjoyed the time. I didn't saw them in a serius way nor expecting masterpieces, instead I watched them accepting they were dated accordind the new standards and with a sense of disbelief.

It seems @gooddream is feeling nostalgic today. I know quantum ...I have seen multiple episodes ( I recently watched them tho). The first thing that absolutely stands out, and is beyond perfect, is the casting of the two main characters. Scott Bakula gives Dr Sam Beckett heart and goodness. He instils within him the best of man; brave, intelligent, selfless, funny and driven. Bakula carries the show through every episode and gives 100% whether he has leaped into the body of a woman, a murderer, a man with down syndrome or even a chimpanzee…the way his actual mannerisms change depending on who he has leapt into is truly amazing. He also brings with him his bravado and singing talent from time spent on stage and in theatre giving him a commanding presence on screen. I somehow found it interesting..maybe it was because I was bored that day.and decided to download some classics off the internet

The movie seem nice enough, the concept of going back to the past to correct certan mistakes seem great. Who wouldn't want to go back and be in the body of Adolf Hitler and stop WWII or the body of John Wilkie Booths and stop the death of Abraham Lincoln. Am sure the reason why the movie seem stale to you is because of the standard of nowadays movie. The movie industries has really changed in recent years and SciFi movie are always fanatically made. Thanks for the review buddy

The story line is like what they did in Hero, the man has such a magical power to travel to the past and to the future to fix things too... I wonder if we can have that in reality... Smile

    (does anyone use DVD anymore?)

DVD is still very common in Nigeria, though people are adopting cables, but DVD still sells...lol

That's the issue with third word, I think...

    Memorable dialogue...

Al: There are five stages of love. The first is denial, then the second is sex, then there's acceptance, then there's divorce... and then there's more sex, if you're lucky.

Sam: Who wrote this textbook, you or Zsa?
