The Beach (film): forced to watch this hundreds of times

Review by @gooddream · 2811d · of The Beach

I probably would have much better memories of this movie if it weren't for the fact that I was continually subjected to requests to play it inside of the restaurant / bar that I managed near where the movie was primarily filmed.

Now prepare yourself, because I am going to be particularly cruel to DiCaprio here because if you recall what I was saying before about how I don't think his movies are great because of him but rather in spite of him. I feel as though this movie is actually pushed down a bit in quality because of him.

There is something about how whenever Leo raises his voice that I think his acting is at its worst. There are multiple times in this movie where that happens and while I don't want to spoil the film too much, there is an instance where he is bragging over his prowess at fishing

and also another scene where is is being held in position and is about to get shot when he decides to berate all of his roommates by shouting "You F**king bastards!" and i just cringe when i have to see those scenes. I don't know how I would have done it any different, but i can imagine not simply shouting at the top of my lungs to the point where my voice cracks would be a good place to start.

For those of you that don't know, this movie takes place in Thailand and is meant to be at a remote island off the coast of Koh Phangan. The island filming was actually done over on the other side of the country here in Krabi. Many of the scenes that are meant to take place in Bangkok were also filmed over here and they simply created a Bangkok look for the street scenes.

Now, the movie isn't terrible and the parts of it that are bad (which is a lot of it) aren't necessarily the actors' faults. It is simply a cheesy script and to be honest I don't know how they pulled that off because the book the movie is based on is absolutely fantastic.

The movie has a beautiful setting that does a decent job of portraying what Thailand is like, right up to the point where the story because about a bunch of teenagers that have some hidden island all to themselves and don't ever have to worry about money or visas and what not. Then it just is an eye-rolling bonanza. Like i said at the start, I am perhaps being too harsh on this film because I was forced to witness it at least 100 times over the course of 11 years, but for the most part, i think this is one of the worst films that Leo stars in.

After watching this film, it became obvious to me that man, by nature, cannot create heaven on earth and live in it. He is a very complex living being and in principle it is impossible for many people to live in harmony and peace. And no matter how hard we try, there will still be “hellish” problems that interfere with the prosperity and life of this very paradise. Therefore, we are left with nothing more than to appreciate every “heavenly” moment of our life and remember it to the end of our days. Remember this paradise.

I read somewhere that the deserted beach used for the film is currently closed for tourism. The place was damaged too much. Locals brought tourists to the beach by boat, where they had time to take a few photos. I do not blame the locals, they obviously react to the needs, and that's perfecty normal, but I always find it very painful when I read such things.

How stupid can you be as a tourist to pay for this. Just because the beach can be seen in some movie. There are so many beautiful beaches in the world, beaches that are really deserted. Do your research and enjoy nature with all the respect you have. We only have one planet.

Luckily for me I’ve only watched this film one time! It was right before I went to Thailand for the first time actually, and I liked it :) however, I’ve only watched it once ;)
