I had avoided watching this movie until yesterday because of some information I received about it not being very good. I definitely disagree with the information that I got and thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
[source](http://www.impawards.com/2007/posters/number_twenty_three_ver2.jpg) This film came out in 2007 and this was a time when Jim Carrey was really trying to break the stigma of his being type-cast as a whimsical actor specifically designed for comedy. There have been a number of attempts on Jim's part and some were good, others not so much. I think that the hardest part for him is that his silly movies like Ace Ventura and what not, are always going to be what we think of when we see him, so it is difficult to take him seriously.
However, i was pleasantly surprised by Jim's performance, even the parts where he is playing a bad ass detective with tattoos and what not. He is convincing and I was impressed.
This movie was ripped apart by critics, Richard Roeper was one of the only professional critics who claimed he liked it. The complaints that critics had about it was that it was confusing and lacked any style. I gotta say that I completely disagree with this. I enjoyed the flashbacks that Jim Carey was experiencing as he visualized the scenes in the books he was reading.
The gradual fascination with the number 23 was pretty interesting to me. I kept looking for places in which the number would appear as well and actually noticed something that the didn't point out in the film, which is that the only numbers on their license plate adds up to 23 as well.
There is a twist ending that I guess not many people appreciated, but I actually did like it. I dunno, I guess all the people that hated it just saw this film in a different way than I did.
I normally am one of those people that can't get on board with whatever film happened to win all the accolades from critics not the other way around. I don't really understand why everyone felt this movie was terrible. Oh well, I guess I am happy to not be the same as everyone else.
I suppose if you went into this film with the same expectations as I did that you might be pleasantly surprised. I went in believing that it was going to be absolute crap and was impressed with how not-crap it was. I suppose you really need to pay attention. I dunno. whatever. I liked it.
