I have to admit, i will go and see just about anything that has some sort of video game theme to it. I have even seen plenty of bad ones. This, however, is one of the best ones.
The main thing i like about this film is that it is funny to adults for completely different reasons than it is funny to kids. They engineered this perfectly so that someone who is 40 can easily go to the theater with their 7 year old kid and both be laughing and enjoying the movie. For example, I would imagine there aren't very many people under the age of 30 that even know what (who) Q-Bert is.
The story centers around Ralph, who is actually the bad guy in a retro video game called "Fix-It Felix Jr." He is all but ignored by the other characters that live inside of his arcade game and i found it very funny that after the arcade closes, all the bad guys go to counseling to help deal with their depression over being the bad guys.
The main story is that Ralph goes on a quest to get a medal (one similar to the one that Felix constantly receives in his own game but Ralph is not entitled to) and ventures into other games in an attempt to get one. This eventually leads him to a racing game called "Sugar Rush" where he gets mixed up with the game and befriends one of the glitching characters and they form an endearing bond - that's right! I'm not afraid to say that a cartoon made me emotional.
The voice work done by everyone in the cast is perfect. John C. Reilly is Ralph and Sarah Silverman (who I normally do NOT like) does an amazing job as Vanellope von Schweetz, the aforementioned little "glitch-girl" in Sugar Rush.
I chucked a bit just watching the trailer. I will likely re-watch this film later today... it is that good. I consider it to be one of the best animated films ever. If you haven't seen it, you definitely should. I am presuming that most of you enjoy video games to a certain degree :)
