XX (film on Netflix): 4 short "horror" films that kind of fall flat

Review by @gooddream · 2541d · of XX

I enjoy a good low-budget horror film. My favorite horror film of all time in Evil Dead after all. Without these visionaries we would be subjected to cookie-cutter Hollywood horror films like Annabelle over and over again. Therefore I am pleased that they exist. However, a vast majority of them are not good and "XX" unfortunately falls into that category.

It is touted as "four killer films presented by four killer women" because the girl power movement is in full swing at the moment. Don't think I am being misogynistic because that isn't how I am. I disliked these films because they aren't particularly good, not because women are the directors, stars, and writers.

I will say one good thing about these films: They are each quite short. Instead of one long mostly boring film we have 4 short stories with completely unrelated casts and plots. Therefore, you only have to be disappointed for 20 minutes at a time rather than 1.5 hours.

The first film, entitled "The Box" is reasonably entertaining and interesting, although they stole almost the entire plot from Steven King's "Thinner."

A young boy speaks to a stranger on a subway one day and asks him "what's in the box" for a gift that the man with a glass eye is carrying. The man shows him and the boy's expression and overall attitude changes. He then ceases to be hungry from that point forward. proceeding to lose a tremendous amount of weight. Anyone who he finally confides in and tells them about what was in the box has the same experience.

The story is interesting and the effects they use to make the boy and his other affected family members is actually really good considering the low budget. However, the short is frustrating to watch because the acting for the most part is quite poor as is the scenarios where the doting parents are simply accepting of the fact that little homie isn't going to eat dinner but simply sit and play with his plate.

If I had tried that same attitude for simply one meal I would still be sitting there now with my Mom forcing me to stay at the table until I cleaned my plate: Whether or not there was a gypsy curse involved or not would be completely irrelevant.

The following 3 films unfortunately do not get any better. The scripts and bad acting keep them somewhat amusing if you are into that sort of thing but for the most part they failed to really hold my interest and would consider them quite average at best.

Of course the professional critics either gave glowing reviews or remained silent due to the fact that to do anything other than that would invoke the ire of the SJW mob that exists online. Seeing as how writers tend to work for liberal media outlets to do anything other than praise the bejesus out of this would of course indicate that said reviewer hates the movies just because women were involved and then they would immediately be labeled as "woman-hating bigots" and their careers would be over.

Well, i fear no such wrath. These short films are not great - they are actually pretty terrible. They do have a few entertaining moments but overall I would say they aren't really worth watching.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give XX the overall rating of....

    lol that is totally true.

Professional criticism is a business that does not really care about the viewer, so I prefer to read reviews of people in their blogs.
