  1. XX Horror Movie Review@readingdanvers3073d

XX is a horror movie anthology. It’s unique in the fact that it was written and directed by women. It includes 4 short movies and a framing movie. Though these movies did not feel very scary, they were spectacular and very strange. Also, all movies offer no closer or even a hint of an explanation so if that bothers you, it’s not the movie for you. I have to say that all short movies were very original and left me feelings, basically WTF. But in a good way.

The frame movie is an animated story by directed Sofia Carrillo. Though it is well done, I just didn’t like it. As a framing story I didn’t feel that it offers any story or a connection between different stories.

The Box It’s better than it sounds. This short movie is directed and written by Jovanka Vuckovic. In this movie a mother and a son are on a train. The son sees an old man sitting close by with a present box near them. He rudely asks the man if he can look inside the box, the man agrees. What he sees in there changes his life and the life of his family. I like the gender reversal roles in the movie, with worrying father that is going out of his mind and a cool minded mother. But as the mother at the end looks for answers, we are also left wondering what was the point of this movie. if it had one.

The Birthday Party I’ll never be able to look at Panda costumes again. This short movie is written by Roxanne Benjamin and Annie Clark and directed by Annie Clark herself. In this short movie a very strange mother tries to organize a birthday party for her daughter. Her daughter is odd, the maid is odd, and the mothers’ behavior is just cannot be explained. But the visual images from this movie will get stuck in your head.

Don't Fall This movie is the weak link in the set. This short movie is directed and written by Roxanne Benjamin. A group of friends go hiking in the desert unaware of the secret dangers lurking around. While visually it was a great movie. Plot wise you can guess everything before it happens, and nothing is surprising. This is disappointing considering that the other movies are so original and unpredictable.

Her Only Living Son This short movie basically exists to break every cliché related to rebellious teenager kids and Rosemary's Baby sort of movies. Directed and written by Karyn Kusama. A mother tries to come to terms with her only rebellious son who is about to turn 18. After spending all of their lives running, their running days will come to an end.

As a horror movie anthology, I can’t help comparing it to V/S/H. V/S/H is a lot scarier, in fact, I didn’t even make it to the end of the movie. But XX is much more stylized and original. With a running time of only an hour and 20 minutes, this movie is definitely worth your time. I was expecting a bunch of clichés and was left pleasantly surprised and wondering what the hell did I just see.

As some of the directors from these movies were nominated to direct Captain Marvel, but didn't get the job, I hope that soon they'll make the jump to bigger movies.

    I give it a 7.5/10
