I am passionate about stories inspired by real events, especially when the facts they evoke left an indelible mark on history, as happened in South Africa for decades when apartheid policies legally governed racial segregation. By then, a minority of white people controlled power and imposed a regime that discriminated and segregated the black race, already historically mistreated by the prevailing racism in the region. However, not all white people supported those measures, some joined clandestine movements that promoted the class struggle in favor of equality.
Being a member of some of these organizations, such as the African National Congress (ANC), was considered an act of treason, and was severely punished. Here begins the story of the Escape from Pretoria, a film inspired by Tim Jenkin's memoirs told in his book Inside Out: Escape from Pretoria Central Prison, in which he tells how he and his friend Stephen Lee, and Alex Moumbaris managed to escape against all odds from Pretoria prison where they were serving sentences for acts of conspiracy and treason, all for opposing that absurd segregation by color, which privileged the lives of white people while disfavoring those of blacks.

Ser presos políticos en esa época y bajo esas condiciones no solo los privaba de su libertad, sino también de cualquier beneficio humano, estarían sometidos a tratos crueles y denigrantes.
Upon their arrival at the prison, it was made clear to them that even within the prison there was segregation, on the one hand, those condemned to death, on the other hand, political prisoners. There they met Denis Goldberg, another anti-apartheid activist, and Alex Moumbaris (whom they called Leonard, I don't know why). Denis was in charge of showing them around, talking to them about the risks, the consequences, and everything that could be involved in thinking about escaping from that place, he was convinced that their struggle would make sense being in prison and not out of it, so any intention of escape was not a possibility for him; unlike Leonard, to whom it seemed a worthy idea to consider.

Jenkin took it upon himself with his impetus to sow the hope of freedom if they managed to escape from that place, but he was aware that it would not be an easy task, so patience was decisive in the process. They analyzed all the possible alternatives to conclude that the only way would be to get the keys to each lock, at first that solution seemed almost an impossible mission because there was no way they would have access to them. Jenkin appealed to his skills, in complicity with Leonard and Lee they propitiated close encounters with the security guards, in those brief moments Jenkin recorded in his mind the plans of each key that the custodians carried tied to their waist, when arriving at his room he captured the image in a paper to later try to manufacture each key using a small file and some pieces of wood.

Jenkin apeló a sus habilidades, en complicidad con Leonard y Lee propiciaron encuentros cercanos con los guardias de seguridad, en esos breves instantes Jenkin grababa en su mente los planos de cada llave que los custodios llevaban atadas a su cintura, al llegar a su habitación plasmaba la imagen en un papel para posteriormente intentar fabricar cada llave usando una pequeña lima y algunos trozos de madera.
The task was not easy, they were constantly watched, during the day they had assigned tasks in prison, so that only during the night he could carry out his plan, that without raising suspicion among the security guards, which was quite difficult, because political prisoners are always in doubt, and whenever possible they are searched to deter any hint of subversion. However, he constantly thought that it was not necessary to know everything but to know enough, with that thought he focused on the basics to continue building his plan.

Resistance, that was the key that Jenkin believed defeated the fascists, so he persisted despite the adversities. He learned to see opportunity where few saw it, finally discovering that the great crack in the armor that represented oppression and injustice was routine, and they used it to their advantage. Between the three of them, they learned to take advantage of that crack to bet on their only objective: to escape from Pretoria without being discovered. Any false step in the escape plan would considerably increase the sentence of those involved, not to mention the mistreatment they would be subjected to.
Resistencia, esa era la clave que según Jenkin vence a los fascistas, así que persistía a pesar de las adversidades. Aprendió a ver oportunidades donde pocos la veían, finalmente descubrió que la gran grieta en aquella armadura que representaba la opresión y la injustica, era la rutina, y la usaron a su favor. Although the title of the film alone gives an indication of what actually happened in the end, the planning and execution of the escape plan was absolutely daring, brilliant, in which patience and perseverance played a decisive role, a process that began in 1978 when they entered the prison and that they managed to complete months later in 1979.
Escape from Pretoria has scenes full of tension that transmit that anguish to the viewer, I could see myself for moments there trying to turn those flimsy keys without breaking them and leaving evidence of the attempt; the film really captures your attention in that sense, because somehow it makes you feel immersed in that risky operation, because, although the prison was not considered maximum security, the political prisoners' ward was closely observed by the authorities.
Aunque el solo titulo de la película ya da indicios de lo que efectivamente ocurrió al final, la planificación y ejecución del plan de fuga fue absolutamente osado, por demás brillante, en el que jugó un papel determinante la paciencia y la constancia, un proceso que iniciaron en 1978 cuando entraron a la cárcel y que lograron completar meses más tarde en 1979.
Fuga de Pretoria, tiene escenas cargadas de mucha tensión que transmiten esa angustia al espectador, yo me veía por instantes allí tratando de girar esas endebles llaves sin que se rompieran y quedase la evidencia de lo intentado; de verdad que la película en ese sentido atrapa la atención totalmente, porque de alguna manera te hace sentir inmerso en aquella arriesgada operación, pues, aunque la cárcel no era considerada de máxima seguridad, el pabellón de presos políticos era observado muy de cerca por las autoridades.
Apartheid should be considered one of the worst aberrations in history, persecutions, tortures, oppression, injustices, an inhuman system that was finally abolished in 1992, when the social struggles for equality gave way to a new system of government of greater inclusion that eventually led Nelson Mandela, leader of the ANC, to the presidency, thus becoming the first black man to occupy that position in South Africa.
While this is the story of these three men who bravely stood up to an oppressive and inhumane regime, and while apartheid as a system no longer exists, I particularly believe that a savage racism still exists in the world that insists on superimposing one race over another by making them feel superior.
El Apartheid debería ser considerado una de las peores aberraciones de la historia, persecuciones, torturas, opresión, injusticias, un sistema por demás inhumano que finalmente fue derogado en 1992, cuando las luchas sociales por la igualdad dieron sus frutos para dar paso a un nuevo sistema de gobierno de mayor inclusión que en su momento llevó a Nelson Mandela, líder del ANC, a la presidencia, convirtiéndose así en el primer hombre negro en ocupar dicho cargo en Sudáfrica.
Si bien esta es la historia de estos 3 hombres que enfrentaron valientemente a un régimen opresor e inhumano, y aunque el apartheid como sistema ya no exista, particularmente creo que sigue existiendo en el mundo un racismo salvaje que insiste en sobreponer una raza por otra haciéndola sentir superior.
Going back to the Escape from Pretoria, the movie, and now to finish, I must say, I liked it a lot, it kept me in suspense and anguish, and that's something I value a lot in a movie/series, because it means that the plot really got through to me, keeping me expectant.
