The morning greeted me with soft warmth and the sun seemed to rise early. It slipped through my curtains, signaling that I got my ass up but I am not one to get out of bed on a typical August morning. I’d rather draw the curtains, push open the windows to let the muggy or crisp air in—whichever one nature decided to show up with for that day—and then I climb back into bed.
With quiet in the air, I thought the mood was perfect for a movie. So I went through a list of movies I had collected from Reddit, threw a lot and it fell on Escape From Pretoria.
“Where have you been all my life?” I asked, satisfactorily.
This movie is the kind of prison break movie that trades big explosions for sweaty palms and held breath and I absolutely loved it.
Fun fact is that it’s based on a true story and you could feel that in every detail. There’s no Hollywood gloss anywhere; just grit, ingenuity and the constant threat of being caught.

Set in 1979 South Africa during apartheid, the story follows Tim Jenkin (Daniel Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber), two anti-apartheid activists who get locked up in Pretoria Prison for distributing banned political leaflets.
What exactly was their crime?
Well, they fought the regime with words.
And their mission after the arrest?
To get out. And to do it without anyone noticing.
What fascinates me here is how they plan their escape. I’m used to insiders helping out or some tunnel digging, or maybe a riot but no. I was surprised with something unconventional, something actually mind blowing.
Tim, the nerdy one, spends weeks secretly crafting wooden keys to open the prison doors one by one. It’s meticulous, methodical and pretty genius. The tension I got from this movie was peak and it doesn’t stem from gunfights or chases but from simply watching them slide a key into a lock, praying it turns before a guard walks by.
Daniel Radcliffeactually my first impression of himcompletely disappears into this role. He’s a tightly wound man who is aware that the smallest mistake could mean more years behind bars. And his accomplices also help add both tension and heart.
As for the pacing, it’s solid for the most part. It’s a slow burn, but in an interesting way. You definitely want it to take its time so every step of the plan feels earned. The sound design really helps too; gosh those little clicks, footsteps and rattling locks really set me on edge.
Would I recommend it? Definitely. It’s smart, tense and proof that sometimes the quietest moments can be the most nail-biting.

Tim is a young South African man who, together with his friend Stephen, leaves leaflet bombs around the city in support of the black community (in the midst of racial segregation). After being discovered, they are sentenced to 12 and 8 years respectively in the Pretoria penitentiary, from where they both promise to escape as soon as possible.

The story is based on real life, so that adds a plus to the film, the dynamism of the story is very well handled because the film never feels neither too slow nor too fast, it is also a constant back and forth of suspense, it is very immersive which makes the viewer can feel the same agony, fear and anguish of the main characters.

Step by step the story is told gradually and as it progresses, so does the suspense, the viewer constantly wonders if they will escape in the end and especially the final part is the most distressing.
Paso a paso la historia va contándose de manera gradual y a medida que avanza también lo hace el suspenso, constantemente el espectador se pregunta si al final lograrán escapar y sobre todo la parte final es la que más angustia causa.
While it's not the most amazing thing about the film, it does have some excellent shots like those where you can carefully see the lock on Tim's cell as it turns. The filters are about what you would expect in an average film, but as I mentioned the shots I think are the highlight of this section.
Si bien no es lo más asombroso de la película, si tiene unos planos excelentes, como esos donde se ve con cuidado el trabajo de la cerradura de la celda de Tim al girar. The performances and the script is (in my personal opinion) the best thing about the film, each of the actors, including the supporting actors and extras, play their roles very well, they make the plot and the story immersive and make you feel like you are watching memories instead of a movie.

Hoy les traigo la review de una película bastante interesante y sobre todo muy intensa en su trama, con escenas que te llevarán el nivel de ansiedad al límite, me refiero a "Escape de Pretoria" un film que nos muestra la espectacular forma en la que Tim Jenkin (un activista político sudafricano) y sus compañeros, escaparon de la prisión de Pretoria mediante el uso de llaves de madera, es una película que nos muestra las consecuencias de vivir en una sociedad dominada por el apartheid, el sistema de segregación racial sudafricano.

For many years South Africa was completely dominated by apartheid, and therefore the quality of life of black people was very sad. As a consequence, resistance groups began to emerge that were in charge of trying to revolt the masses so that they would no longer accept such an absurd situation, so typical of fascism at the beginning of the century. In this way, Tim Jenkin together with his friend Stephen Lee, prepared some devices that when they exploded blew up pamphlets containing subversive ideas, however they were caught and tried, both were sentenced to Pretoria prison for white men, Jenki got 12 years and Lee 8, However, neither of them is willing to spend so much time in prison unjustly, just for wanting to stop the mistreatment to which black people were subjected, so Jenkin resorts to his skill as a craftsman to copy the design and later elaborate the 39 keys of the doors that separate them from the longed-for freedom.

De esta forma, Tim Jenkin junto con su amigo Stephen Lee prepararon algunos dispositivos que al estallar hicieron saltar por los aires panfletos que contenían ideas subversivas, no obstante fueron atrapados y juzgados, ambos fueron condenados a la prisión de Pretoria para hombres blancos, Jenki obtuvo 12 años de condena y Lee 8, sin embargo ninguno de los dos está dispuesto a pasar tanto tiempo en prisión injustamente, tan solo por querer detener el maltrato al que eran sometidas las personas negras, de modo que Jenkin recurre a su habilidad como artesano para copiar el diseño y posteriormente elaborar las 39 llaves de las puertas que los separan de la tan anhelada libertad.

My Opinion
What I like most about this film is that it is based on real events, on everything Jenkin told after he was released. The star of this film is undoubtedly the story, very well structured, by the way, I love that from time to time we hear Jenkin's voiceover as narrator, I think this gives it a more realistic and human touch, the script was also great, the dialogues touch your soul and are certainly impregnated with a subversive and courageous aura.
Lo que más me gusta de esta película es que está basada en hechos reales, en todo lo que relató Jenkin después de obtener su libertad. La estrella de este film sin lugar a dudas es la historia, muy bien estructurada, por cierto, me encanta que de vez en cuando escuchemos la voz en off de Jenkin como narrador, creo que esto le da un toque más realista y humano, el guion también estuvo genial, los diálogos te llegan al alma y sin duda están impregnados de un aura subversiva y valiente.
The director, Francis Annan, knew how to combine all the resources to transmit the emotions of the characters, so thanks to the excellent performances, the soundtrack and the magnificent photography, he achieved quite powerful scenes, and speaking precisely about the photography I can tell you that I loved the way the director knew how to handle the colour palette and the lights, at the beginning of the film we perceive the warmth that natural light provides, although the shots make us feel in danger all the time, in the scenes where the characters are in prison the shadows are the protagonists, there are many closed shots and dark filters that generate an oppressive sensation, but one of the things that I must highlight regarding the shots, is that they were very detailed in the scenes where Jenkin tests the keys that he has elaborated, we can even see how the key turns and the mechanism is activated.
El director, Francis Annan, supo combinar todos los recursos para lograr transmitir las emociones de los personajes, así que gracias a las excelentes actuaciones, el soundtrack y la magnífica fotografía, él logró unas escenas bastante poderosas, y hablando precisamente de la fotografía les puedo decir que amé la forma en que el director supo manejar la paleta de colores y las luces, al inicio del film percibimos la calidez que proporciona la luz natural, aunque los planos nos hacen sentir en peligro todo el tiempo, en las escenas donde los personajes están en prisión las sombras son las protagonistas, hay muchos planos cerrados y filtros oscuros que generan una sensación opresiva, pero una de las cosas que debo destacar en cuanto a los planos, es que fueron muy detallistas en las escenas donde Jenkin prueba las llaves que ha elaborado, incluso podemos ver como gira la llave y se acciona el mecanismo.
The performances were wonderful but I must highlight Daniel Ridcliffe's, watching the film you really feel the tension and anguish of his character, his nervous and expressive look, the trembling of his hands, but at the same time you also perceive his determination and his refusal to give up. Another performance that I loved was Leonard Fontaine's, his performance in the scenes where he interacted with his son touched my soul, the tone of his voice, the pain in his eyes, everything makes you feel that you are really in front of a desperate man, who loves his son and longs to be with him, and as for the actors who played the prison guards? Wow! What a way to intimidate, I think they made the job easier for Daniel Ridcliffe, Ian Hart, Leonard Fontaine, Stephen Lee and all the actors who played prisoners, as their facial expressions, postures, voice intonation, everything, but absolutely everything was scary.
Las actuaciones estuvieron maravillosas pero debo destacar la de Daniel Ridcliffe, al ver la película de verdad sientes la tensión y angustia de su personaje, su mirada nerviosa y expresiva, el temblor de sus manos, pero al mismo tiempo también percibes su determinación y su negación a rendirse. Otra de las actuaciones que me encantó fue la de Leonard Fontaine, su interpretación en las escenas donde interactuaba con su hijo me llegó al alma, el tono de su voz, el dolor de su mirada, todo te hace sentir que de verdad estás frente a un hombre desesperado, que ama a su hijo y ansía estar con él, y en cuanto a los actores que interpretaron a los guardias de la prisión... ¡Wow! Que forma de intimidar tienen, creo que ellos hicieron el trabajo más fácil para Daniel Ridcliffe, Ian Hart, Leonard Fontaine, Stephen Lee y todos los actores que interpretaban prisioneros, ya que sus expresiones fasciales, posturas, entonación de la voz, todo, pero absolutamente todo provocaba miedo.
The design of the guards' uniforms, together with the intonation of their voices, inevitably takes us back to the gestapo of Nazi Germany, remember that both the prison and the whole country are run under a fascist ideology, so I think it was a great success to involve these elements that brought more realism to the plot.

"Escape from Pretoria" is a film that shows us what human beings are capable of achieving when they are persevering, when determination does not allow them to give up, it is a story of overcoming but also of courage, it teaches us that giving up is not an option because immediately you become an accomplice of the system, they will try to bend your will, make you feel miserable, they will use the word "traitor" a thousand times to try to make you feel disgusted with yourself, but when you are very clear about your ideas, you are impervious to the opinions of others. I am passionate about stories inspired by real events, especially when the facts they evoke left an indelible mark on history, as happened in South Africa for decades when apartheid policies legally governed racial segregation. Resistance, that was the key that Jenkin believed defeated the fascists, so he persisted despite the adversities. Although the title of the film alone gives an indication of what actually happened in the end, the planning and execution of the escape plan was absolutely daring, brilliant, in which patience and perseverance played a decisive role, a process that began in 1978 when they entered the prison and that they managed to complete months later in 1979.
Escape from Pretoria has scenes full of tension that transmit that anguish to the viewer, I could see myself for moments there trying to turn those flimsy keys without breaking them and leaving evidence of the attempt; the film really captures your attention in that sense, because somehow it makes you feel immersed in that risky operation, because, although the prison was not considered maximum security, the political prisoners' ward was closely observed by the authorities.

Apartheid should be considered one of the worst aberrations in history, persecutions, tortures, oppression, injustices, an inhuman system that was finally abolished in 1992, when the social struggles for equality gave way to a new system of government of greater inclusion that eventually led Nelson Mandela, leader of the ANC, to the presidency, thus becoming the first black man to occupy that position in South Africa.
While this is the story of these three men who bravely stood up to an oppressive and inhumane regime, and while apartheid as a system no longer exists, I particularly believe that a savage racism still exists in the world that insists on superimposing one race over another by making them feel superior.
El Apartheid debería ser considerado una de las peores aberraciones de la historia, persecuciones, torturas, opresión, injusticias, un sistema por demás inhumano que finalmente fue derogado en 1992, cuando las luchas sociales por la igualdad dieron sus frutos para dar paso a un nuevo sistema de gobierno de mayor inclusión que en su momento llevó a Nelson Mandela, líder del ANC, a la presidencia, convirtiéndose así en el primer hombre negro en ocupar dicho cargo en Sudáfrica.
Si bien esta es la historia de estos 3 hombres que enfrentaron valientemente a un régimen opresor e inhumano, y aunque el apartheid como sistema ya no exista, particularmente creo que sigue existiendo en el mundo un racismo salvaje que insiste en sobreponer una raza por otra haciéndola sentir superior.
Going back to the Escape from Pretoria, the movie, and now to finish, I must say, I liked it a lot, it kept me in suspense and anguish, and that's something I value a lot in a movie/series, because it means that the plot really got through to me, keeping me expectant. I love that feeling, and I appreciate it. Volviendo a La Fuga de Pretoria, la película, y ya para finalizar, debo decirlo, me gustó bastante, me mantuvo en suspenso y angustia, y eso es algo que valoro mucha en una película/serie, porque quiere decir que la trama realmente ha calado en mí logrando mantenerme expectante. This jailbreak movie was fun and intense! The story is set in South Africa when it was ruled by the Apartheid. 2 guys were trying to change the political system and turn this country into a free one but their subversive actions were considered crimes.
They were caught and sentenced to jail for a bunch of years but being far from conformists, they started to think about escaping from the very beginning. In a society that doesn't respect freedom, jails are worse than normal but these guys endured everything and worked towards a plan that could help them escape.
I don't want to say what was their strategy all about because it could be a spoiler but by simply looking at the poster you can figure it out. However, it is a strategy that couldn't work in today's prisons but they were lucky to have the skills at that time to make it work.
This story happened in real life and the saddest part is that even though South Africa politics and government ended up changing, it was for the worst. Now there is a radical left-wing party in total control, who are racist against the white minority and are destroying the economy. So much effort to fix a country only for it to succumb even lower.
I was happy with the performances, they were ok. The same goes for the camera work. Daniel Radcliffe, the Harry Potter actor, did a good performance. I think this guy has already proved several times he is more than capable of taking the lead role in serious films. He has clearly grown beyond his popularity for simply being Harry Potter.
I would recommend this movie if you are looking for tension and some intense scenes. Their strategy to escape was very clever and implementing it was nerve breaking. Good movie for sure.
