They say that the profession you choose is marked by the environment in which you are educated, if that had been the case, I would have been a teacher or a lawyer...a lawyer if we measure it by the number of influences since it is the profession that predominates in my family, not to mention that I ended up married to one.
The influence of law in my life was such that even my engineering degree thesis was software developed for the management control of a municipal court. I mastered in such detail the processes of civil law, that when the president of the jury was about to read the verdict of my defense, she asked me with a threatening tone: "Bachelor, do you aspire to the title of engineer or lawyer?", before I could answer (and thank goodness I did not, because I was terrified) she congratulated me for having passed my thesis with a grade of publication and closed her lecture by inviting me to study law in the future. Obviously, this never happened, someone had to have the responsibility to sabotage those boring legal talks at home.
The truth is that if I had studied law, I would have surely ended up specializing in criminal law, criminal investigation has always captured my attention, it is something I am really passionate about, maybe that is the reason why police and crime dramas are the genres I enjoy reading and watching the most. The Netflix algorithm already knows about my preferences, so the suggestions for series and/or movies usually revolve around these themes, from that proposed selection two weeks ago I decided to watch The Lincoln Lawyer. I knew nothing about this series prior to that and had never even heard of it, so I started watching it based on the brief synopsis on Netflix.
Dicen que la profesión que elijas está signada por el ambiente en el que te formas, de haber sido así, yo habría sido educadora o abogada…abogada si lo medimos por número de influencia, pues es la profesión que predomina en mi núcleo familiar, sin mencionar que terminé casada con uno.
Fue tal la influencia del derecho en mi vida que incluso mi tesis de grado de ingeniería fue un software desarrollado para el control de gestión de un juzgado de municipio. Llegué a dominar con tal detalle los procesos del derecho civil, que cuando la presidenta del jurado estaba por leer el veredicto de mi defensa, me preguntó con tono amenazante: ¿Bachiller, usted aspira el título de Ingeniero o el de Abogado?, antes de que pudiese responder (y menos mal no lo hice, porque estaba aterrada) me felicitó por haber aprobar mi tesis con mención publicación, y cerró su lectura invitándome a estudiar derecho en el futuro. Obvio esto jamás pasó, alguien debía sabotear esas aburridas charlas jurídicas en casa.
Lo cierto es que de haberlo hecho, de haber estudiado derecho, seguramente habría terminado especializándome en derecho penal, la investigación de hechos criminales siempre ha captado mi atención, es algo que realmente me apasiona, tal vez es la razón por la que los dramas policiales y criminales son los géneros que más disfruto leer y ver. El algoritmo de Netflix ya conoce de mis preferencias, de manera que las sugerencias de series y/o películas suelen giran en torno a estos temas, de esa selección propuesta hace dos semanas me decidí a ver El Abogado del Lincoln. No sabía nada previo a esta serie, ni siquiera había oído de ella, así que empecé a verla basada en la breve sinopsis de Netflix.
Before I tell you my impressions of the series, let me give you some context as to what it's all about. The series is based on one of the novels in the Mickey Haller series written by novelist Michael Connelly, a famed writer of the detective and crime genre. The novel tells the story of Mickey Haller, a defense attorney who after losing a case that condemned an innocent man to jail, plunges into a deep depression that leads him to have an accident that almost ends his life and keeps him away from the courts for over a year until he is surprisingly notified that an old colleague has been murdered under strange circumstances and he is the heir to his legal firm and the cases he was handling.
Antes de comentarles mis impresiones de la serie, los pongo en contexto de que va todo. La serie está basada en una de las novelas de la serie Mickey Haller escrita por el novelista Michael Connelly, un afamado escritor del género policial y criminal. La novela cuenta la historia de Mickey Haller, un abogado defensor que tras perder un caso que condenó un inocente a la cárcel, se sume en una profunda depresión que lo lleva a tener un accidente que casi acaba con su vida y lo aleja de los tribunales por más de un año, hasta que sorpresivamente es notificado que un viejo colega ha sido asesinado en extrañas circunstancias y él es el heredero de su bufete y los casos que éste llevaba.
The opportunity to resume his old life is contingent on getting his old colleague's clients to agree to let Haller represent them, of which his target client is Trevor Elliott, a multimillionaire owner of a video game development company who has been accused of murdering his wife and her lover. Elliott's defense will challenge Haller's skills and tolerance, for as he becomes involved in the case he begins to uncover an entire web of conspiracy and corruption.
Para Haller, la oportunidad de retomar su vieja vida está supeditada a lograr que los clientes de su viejo colega acepten que él los represente, de todos ellos, su cliente objetivo es Trevor Elliott, un multimillonario dueño de una empresa de desarrollo de videojuegos que ha sido acusado de asesinar a su esposa y al amante de ésta. La defensa de Elliott pondrá a prueba las habilidades y la tolerancia de Haller, pues a medida que se involucra en el caso comienza a descubrir toda una red de conspiración y corrupción.
The Lincoln Lawyer, may resemble many other iconic series of the genre with the special feature that Mickey Haller does not manage his cases as most of his colleagues do, he does it from inside a luxury Lincoln vehicle, well, several in reality. Parallel to the professional plot in Haller's life, there is also that of his private life, in which he shares custody of his daughter with his first ex-wife Maggie McPherson, also a legal professional, but as prosecuting attorney, so their professional positions put them on opposite sides...you can already guess what is woven as a consequence of the above.
El Abogado del Lincoln, puede parecerse a muchas otras series icónicas del género con la especial característica de que Mickey Haller no gestiona sus casos como lo hace la mayoría de sus colegas, él lo hace desde el interior de un elegante Lincoln, bueno, varios en realidad. Paralelo a la trama profesional en la vida de Haller, está también la de su vida privada, en la que comparte la custodia de su hija con su primera exesposa Maggie McPherson, también profesional del derecho, pero como fiscal acusador, por lo que sus posiciones profesionales los ponen en bandos contrarios…ya pueden suponer lo que se teje como consecuencia de lo anterior.
Ok, I won't tell you anymore because I might be being reckless, instead, I'll tell you about my impressions of the series. The first thing I must say is that it didn't cross my mind to review this series, but after a whole controversy on Twitter due to the mixed emotions that the series produced in me, @liveofdalla suggested I do the review to get it off my chest.
All this came up because I mentioned that the series wasn't that good, and yet I was still hooked on watching it, in fact, in a couple of days I watched all 10 episodes of the first season. During that time I kept asking myself "why are you still so hooked if you're not watching Suits, I mean, it's not good, let it go", but I was still hooked waiting for the outcome. The reason is due to the fact that the series is quite entertaining, predictable, yes, and very much so, but entertaining, and I think that's the hook that conquers the audience.
Ok, no les sigo contando más porque puedo pecar de imprudente, en lugar de eso les hablaré de mis impresiones. Lo primero que debo decir es que no se me pasó por la mente reseñar esta serie, pero luego de toda una controversia en twitter producto de las emociones encontradas que me produjo la serie, @liveofdalla me sugirió hacerla para desahogarme.
Todo esto surgió porque mencioné que la serie no era tan buena, y que aun así, estaba instaladísima viéndola, de hecho, en un par de días vi los 10 capítulos de la primera temporada. En ese tiempo me cuestionaba incesantemente “¿por qué sigues tan enganchada si no estás viendo Suits?, o sea, no es buena, déjala ir”, pero allí seguí enganchada esperando el desenlace. La razón obedece al hecho de que la serie es bastante entretenida, predecible, sí y mucho, pero entretenida, y creo que allí está el gancho que conquista a la audiencia.
I can't deny that I enjoyed that strategic part in which Haller goes from the backseat of his elegant Lincoln telling how a defendant's arguments are constructed in order to demolish those of the prosecutor. It's those things that give it a touch of brilliance that captivates and entertains, and that's how it crosses that fine line between being good and not so good, or maybe it's a very good bad series, I don't know.
The only thing I can say is that I'm looking forward to seeing the second season, which as far as I know is not yet confirmed. So, it has something, so the best way to make your own opinion is to watch it. If you do, I'll be happy to hear your opinion.
No puedo negar que disfruté esa parte estratégica en la que Haller va desde el asiento trasero de su elegante Lincoln relatando cómo se construyen los alegatos de una defensa para echar por tierra los del fiscal acusador. Son esas cosas las que le dan un toque de brillantez que cautiva y entretiene; y así es como cruza esa delgada línea entre ser buena y no tan buena, o tal vez es una muy buena serie mala, no lo sé.
Lo único que si puedo decir es que quedé con ganas de ver la segunda temporada, que hasta donde sé todavía no está confirmada. Entonces, algo tiene, así que la mejor manera de hacerte tu propia opinión, es viéndola. Si lo haces, estaré encantada de conocer tu opinión.
