Locked Up (2024) review

Review by @gutuso 🏆#145 🎵41 🎬41 · 2h · of Locked Up

Hello, everyone I hope you’re all doing well. As for me, I’m doing great, too

Today, I’d like to share with you a series I watched over the course of seven months, throughout 2024. I watched all four seasons of Vis a Vis (Locked Up), a series that really left an impression on me with its story, its characters, and its many twists and turns.

There are TV shows we watch just to pass the time, but there are others whose stories draw us so deeply into the characters’ lives that we sometimes find ourselves wondering what we would do if we were in their shoes. For me, Vis a Vis is one of those shows that creates that kind of tension. It’s a story about life in prison, but as the episodes unfold, we come to realize that it’s not limited to crime and violence.

It all begins with Macarena Ferreiro whose life is turned upside down when she is sent to prison. She arrives there unaware of the harsh reality that awaits her, but the circumstances she faces force her to see the world from a different perspective. What’s interesting is that her transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Each event leaves its mark on her and gradually transforms the way she sees others and stands up for herself.

But when talking about this series, it’s hard not to be drawn to Zulema Zahir . Her personality, her strategic intelligence, and the way she handles difficult situations give the story a special flavor. Sometimes her decisions surprise us, and at other times, we wonder what on earth is going through her mind. The relationship between her and Macarena is one of the elements that makes the series captivating, as their situation and their dynamic evolve over time.

What I particularly enjoyed about Vis a Vis is that it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen. Secrets are revealed, plans go awry, betrayals occur, and certain situations force us to rethink our interpretation of previous events. Sometimes, you think a character has finally found a way out, but an unexpected event turns everything upside down. This made me want to keep following the story and find out what happens to the characters.

I also found that the series does a great job of showing how difficult it is to trust others when everyone is focused first and foremost on saving their own lives. Friendship, love, and loyalty coexist with fear and conflicting interests. Someone you support today may become your adversary tomorrow, while someone you initially feared may sometimes reveal a completely unexpected side.

Over the course of the four seasons, the story takes us through situations that are different from those at the beginning, while developing the conflicts, dangers, and the characters’ efforts to regain control of their lives. What I appreciate is that the events don’t constantly revolve around the same problem. The situations evolve, and the relationships between the characters go through different stages. This allows the series to maintain its pace and suspense right up to the end.

Of course, the series contains violent scenes and decisions that are sometimes hard to understand. However, I find that one of its most interesting aspects is the way extreme situations reveal people’s true nature. When a person loses their freedom, their sense of security, and the ability to control their own life, fear, resistance, and the desire to change their situation take center stage.

The series also features moving moments that remind us that every incarcerated person has a story and a life outside the prison walls. This encourages us not to judge the characters solely by their actions, although that doesn't mean their crimes should be excused.

Overall, I think the strength of this series lies in its blend of suspense, mystery, and character development. It’s not a series that will appeal to everyone, especially those who don’t like violence or tense situations. However, people who enjoy crime stories and unexpected twists and turns may find a lot to appreciate in it.

Finally, Vis a Vis reminded me that freedom is something precious something whose true value we sometimes only realize after we’ve lost it. The series also shows that difficult circumstances can force a person to change, but that change doesn’t necessarily mean life will become easier.

In my opinion, Vis a Vis is a series worth checking out if you enjoy stories full of suspense, betrayal, and characters whose actions are hard to predict.

Now I’d like to ask you a question: For those of you who watched Vis a Vis, what event surprised you the most? Do you think Macarena changed in order to survive, or that prison turned her into a different person than she was at the beginning?
