This new Netflix show had all the ingredients to be my favourite watch of the year. A mysterious iceberg in a fishery town brought a deadly creature to the neighborhood. That is for sure a plot that would pique my interest. However, in the end wasn't the big hit that I was expecting, maybe the director wanted to be a plot twist to surprise everyone, and the movie from a dark fiction/horror topic was transformed into an "eco-warrior", "Free Willy" style.

The 6-episode miniseries is written by Jesse McKeown, a Canadian who also wrote the script for the Netflix version of Umbrella Academy. You can see that this is Canadian-made since you see many elements in the story to make Canada proud, let's say. The story happens on the big Island of Newfoundland, in the city of Snook's Arm. It looks like the city really existed in the North of the island, but it was resettled in 2018 because of the low local population, and there is some overlap with the Netflix story, which you can see here . They got a giant squid on their shore once. But the movie wasn't filmed there; it was filmed in another location on the Island.

Newfoundland is a mythical place by nature, with people speaking English with a different accent compared to the rest of Canada. The movie brings that which is fun. The story introduces the 48-year-old Calvin Penney (Josh Hartner), who has a boat that is used to "fish" icebergs in the sea. Yeah, that is another curiosity of Newfoundland; people go there to see icebergs that are dislodged. Calvin does that to sell the ice to a company that produces Vodka made from iceberg water! Interesting thing is that Josh Hartner is the same 48 years as Calvin, and to be frank,k he doesn't look 48 at all. I remembered him from somewhere, and there you go: he was famous in the late 90s and early 2000's; he was the main character in the horror "The Faculty" and the 2001 Pearl Harbor.

In addition to Josh, another not-so-unknown actor plays his son, Wade (Charlie Heaton, you know him as Jonathan from Stranger Things). Wade lives with Calvin, unlike his other two brothers who went to other provinces of Canada, but they come back to visit their father. Mary (Ruby Stokes, who I watched in Lockwood & Co) comes from Montreal with her boyfriend to present him to his father, and the other brother, Jay (Rohan Campbell), comes from Calgary with a financial problem after a loan with a loan shark. Jay arrives in town with a Calgary Flames hat, like a true Albertan.

So the iceberg shows up on the shore, and after some scientific analysis, they see that the ice isn't made of pure water, but there are some compounds associated with it, and together with the ice, a giant squid shows up, killing people like a real horror movie. But in the end the squid isn't anymore the villain , but global warming and the big company owner of the region that want to relocate everyone so he can explore metals in under the soil. A terrible plot twist for a horror movie .

The series has an ending that at least doesn't make us any more willing to have a continuation. It has a closure to the story but I can admit that it was creative to bring topics part of Canadian culture and natural landscape that not many people know about it.

I watched the whole series, and I enjoyed it. Was it the best things ever made? No, but it wasn't bad either. I doubt there will be a season two though even though we saw the icebergs approaching at the end! lol

The consensus seems to be that this pretty much sucks.
