Following the tremendous success of "Squid Game", Netflix turned its rainbow eye of Sauron to South Korea and began buying more and more content from them. I simplify it a bit, because titles from that country have already started appearing on this streaming platform, but as you can see, we have more and more of them. First it was "Hellbound", now "All of us are dead" and there are other series on the way. As I mentioned in my review of Hellbound, Koreans make really good series. I heard praise about them over 10 years ago, when I talked to my friend from college about those produced by the Japanese. People on the Internet (both from Poland and the rest of the world) spoke similarly, and I could not call them ignorant about this topic. I don't know if they were experts, like some of my friends, who watched much more anime than I did, but they spoke quite freely about them, giving sensible arguments and suggestions for further series. Both Ania and them emphasized that they have better and more interesting scripts, the actors play less theatrically, and the atmosphere, themes and generally the rest are closer to the culture of Europeans and Americans (despite the fact that, for obvious reasons, Japan and their culture are much stronger affect the democratic part of Korea). It is true that I do not know many titles from both countries, but after what I have seen in the case of series, I believe the above-mentioned people.
What does it look like in the case of "All of us ..."? Once again I found out that despite the differences visible at first glance, we have a lot in common. Similar problems, sometimes the way of perceiving the world and conclusions drawn from it. Apart from the differences in the organization of society, other issues related to it, interpersonal relations and solutions to some problems (which, in fact, are not that many), I imagine that each of these 3 series could be done by Americans or Europeans. The opinion that Koreans are the "most Western" (with which I have encountered many times in different places and contexts) of the Asian nations seems to be at least partially confirmed. For example, when it comes to the common mistakes for zombie movies, which usually result from the script (extra drama, easy way to introduce an intriguing plot, etc.), but let's not get ahead of time. As for the plot, this one is simple. Without getting into spoilers (I'm talking literally about the very beginning of the 1st episode, and the second thing is quite clear from it, so I don't take it as a betrayal of the script) - the son of a biology teacher, he is regularly attacked by school bullies. One night, he is brutally injured by them and goes to the hospital. There he dies, and the father decides to take revenge by creating a deadly virus that turns people into zombies. Before you start complaining - take it easy, it has been cleared up and let's say it sticks to logic, at least within that world (there has recently been talk of the possibility of making changes to DNA. Admittedly, the action from the series is so far a song of the future, if at all possible, but let's say it can be theoretically justified). There are also more threads, but I don't want to reveal these. I can consider most of them good. It is true that I can accuse many of them, that they are a bit inconsistently written, but ... I decided to be merciful. I had a lot of fun, I surprised myself a couple of times, the series is good overall, so I didn't want to be picky.
Even though you will find here a lot of illogicality and script lockpicks, characteristic of films of this type (some screamed that they are, I felt like I was watching a movie from a few decades ago), I had a lot of fun. There are other crap too, like zombies ripping people's guts out (and they didn't get any superhuman powers, so it was impossible). I will say this - being honest with you, this is a disadvantage in my opinion - such things spoiled the immersion a bit, because you feel yourself, you want to praise a lot and get something like that in your face. It didn't bother me though, because I didn't have high expectations of him. There was a nice gore, some really good scenes, I had a good time with my girlfriend in general and that was the most important thing for me. But dragging pissed me off. "All of us .." has 12 hours, and sometimes even longer episodes (not much, because on average it turns out to be around 70), and the whole thing could be closed at 9, not 13. It seems to me that there would be nothing about it lost, and you would not have to throw away anything essential. Thanks to this, pacing would definitely improve, we only listened to some threads, cleaning up or doing something similar. There was no complete tragedy in this field, but the viewer's time was wasted a bit. My rating is 7/10.
Po olbrzymim sukcesie "Squid Game", Netflix skierował swoje tęczowe oko Saurona w kierunku Korei Południowej i zaczął kupować od nich coraz więcej treści. Nieco to upraszczam, bo na tej platformie streamingowej już wcześniej zaczęły się pojawiać tytuły z tamtego kraju, ale jak widać, mamy ich coraz więcej. Najpierw było to "Hellbound", teraz "All of us are dead", a w drodze są jeszcze inne seriale. Jak wspominałem przy recenzji "Hellbound", Koreańczycy robią naprawdę dobre seriale. Słyszałem pochwały na ich temat już ponad 10 lat temu, gdy rozmawiałem z moją koleżanką ze studiów na temat tych produkowanych przez Japończyków. Podobnie wypowiadali się ludzie w internecie (zarówno z Polski, jak i reszty świata), których bynajmniej nie mógłbym nazwać ignorantami w tym temacie. Nie wiem, czy byli to eksperci, jak niektórzy moi znajomi, którzy obejrzeli znacznie więcej anime ode mnie, ale wypowiadali się na ich temat dość swobodnie, podając sensowne argumenty i propozycje kolejnych seriali. Zarówno Ania jak i oni, podkreślali że mają lepiej i ciekawiej napisane scenariusze, aktorzy grają mniej teatralnie, a klimat, tematyka i generalnie cała reszta, jest bliższa kulturze Europejczyków i Amerykanów (mimo, że z oczywistych względów, Japonia i ich kultura, znacznie mocniej oddziałują na demokratyczną część Korei). Co prawda nie znam zbyt wielu tytułów z obu krajów, ale po tym co widziałem w przypadku seriali, to wierzę w/w ludziom na słowo.
Jak to wygląda w przypadku "All of us..."? Po raz kolejny przekonałem się, że mimo różnic widocznych na pierwszy rzut oka, to wiele nas łączy. Podobne problemy, czasami sposób postrzegania świata i wnioski z tego płynące. Pomijając różnice w kwestii organizacji społeczeństwa, innych kwestii tego dotyczących, relacji międzyludzkich i rozwiązań niektórych problemów (których tak na dobrą sprawę nie ma aż tak dużo), to wyobrażam sobie, że każdy z tych 3 seriali mogliby zrobić Amerykanie lub Europejczycy. Opinia że Koreańczycy są "najbardziej Zachodni" (z którą wielokrotnie się spotkałem w różnych miejscach i kontekstach) z Azjatyckich narodów, zdaje się przynajmniej częściowo potwierdzać. Choćby w kwestii typowych błędów dla filmów o zombie, które zazwyczaj wynikają z powodu scenariusza (dodatkowa dramaturgia, łatwy sposób na wprowadzenie intrygującego wątku etc.), ale nie uprzedzajmy faktów. Jeśli chodzi o fabułę, to ta jest prosta. Bez wchodzenia w spoilery (mówię dosłownie o samym początku 1 odcinka, a druga rzecz dość jasno z niego wynika, więc nie traktuję tego jako zdradzanie scenariusza) - syn nauczyciela biologii, jest regularnie atakowany przez szkolnych łobuzów. Pewnej nocy, zostaje przez nich brutalnie ranny i trafia do szpitala. Tam umiera, a ojciec postanawia się zemścić, tworząc śmiertelnego wirusa zamieniającego ludzi w zombie. Zanim zaczniecie narzekać - spokojnie, zostało to wyjaśnione i powiedzmy, że trzyma się logiki, przynajmniej w obrębie tamtego świata (od niedawna mówi się o możliwości wprowadzenia zmian do DNA. Co prawda akcja z serialu to póki co pieśń przyszłości, o ile to w ogóle możliwe, ale powiedzmy, że da się to teoretycznie uzasadnić). Wątków jest również więcej, ale tych nie chcę zdradzać. Większość z nich mogę uznać za dobre. Co prawda wielu z nich mogę zarzucić, że są trochę niekonsekwentnie napisane, ale.. Postanowiłem być litościwy. Bawiłem się naprawdę dobrze, parę razy zaskoczyłem się na plus, ogólnie serial jest dobry, więc nie chciałem się czepiać.
Mimo, że znajdziecie tu mnóstwo nielogiczności i wytrychów scenariuszowych, charakterystycznych dla filmów tego typu (niektóre aż krzyczały, że nimi są, czułem się jakbym oglądał film sprzed kilku dekad), to bawiłem się naprawdę dobrze. Są też inne bzdury, jak zombie wyrywający flaki z brzucha ludzi (a nie dostawali jakiś nadludzkich mocy, więc było to niemożliwe). Powiem tak - będąc z Wami uczciwy, to jest wg mnie wada - takie rzeczy nieco psuły immersję, bo człowiek się wczuwa, chce już bardzo pochwalić i dostaje takim czymś w twarz. Mi to jednak nie przeszkadzało, bo nie miałem wysokich oczekiwań wobec niego. Było przyjemne gore, kilka naprawdę dobrych scen, generalnie miło spędziłem czas z dziewczyną i to było dla mnie najważniejsze. Wkurzało mnie natomiast przeciąganie. "All of us.." ma 12 godzinnych, a czasem jeszcze dłuższych odcinków (niewiele, bo uśredniając to wychodzi około 70), a całość można byłoby zamknąć spokojne w 9, a nie 13. Wydaje mi się, że nic by na tym nie stracił oraz nie trzeba byłoby wyrzucać nic istotnego. Dzięki temu pacing by się zdecydowanie poprawił, niektóre wątki jedynie słuchaliśmy, sprzątając lub robiąc coś podobnego. Kompletnej tragedii na tym polu nie było, no ale trochę zmarnowano czas widza. Moja ocena to 7/10.
