In a text from 2019 in which I reviewed "Halloween 2018", I said it was the best image I saw last year. Not everyone agreed with me, but after the three sessions, I did not change my mind. Yes, the movie makes a smaller impression with each screening, but this is the case in almost every case. Few movies are so good that we get just as much fun the second or third time - especially in the case of comedies or horror films, where the level and evaluation of which depends so much on humor or elements of horror. Of course, there are other factors, perhaps I was wrong and overestimated their importance, I do not insist. Nevertheless, they certainly make a significant contribution to the things I wrote about. The first screening was wonderful, it was a revelation to me - I noticed that you can make a very good movie out of a horror movie. An image that touches upon sometimes overlooked topics in the cinema of this genre. Sometimes in a goofy way, sometimes in a serious way, but what they both had in common was that they were just very well done. An image that will add something new to this genre. Thanks to him, I got motivated to watch classic horror movies in order to find the same, captivating elements. The second session was with a friend, we were both satisfied. The third was with my girlfriend during this year's vacation. I wanted to show her what we are going to watch on Halloween and what I'm really looking forward to. Asia wasn't as thrilled with the movie as I was, but she generally liked it. She agreed it was atmospheric, had at least a few successful scary scenes, generally rated it as a good movie. She did not wait for the sequel, but after persuasion she agreed and on November 1 we watched "Halloween Kills". Speaking half-jokingly, half-seriously - male colleagues, sometimes I advise you to take into account the female "6 sense", because he can sense shit per kilometer. Something distracted Joanna from the screening ... After an hour I also felt the stench myself, and after 1.5 hours we turned off the film and returned to Westeros. I know this is an exaggeration, but I feel painfully disappointed and am not going to hide my bitterness behind polite words. I waited a lot for him, there was no option that he would be unsuccessful, and here please ... But it failed. Such a beautiful catastrophe that I will remember for years, just like "Suicide Squad". If I had to review this creation with one simple and catchy slogan, it would be - "Shit and vomit. 1/10, I don't even recommend it to fans".
It took me an hour, and for another 30 minutes I was 100% sure. I thought all this shit was for a purpose, but unfortunately I was too trusting. It felt like a well thought out show, with ideas with unexpected potential. This impression was intensified by quite a good gore (killing a black lady with this light bulb, or the scene with a burning house and the effective extermination of firefighters), although I do not understand the general admiration in this matter, with beautiful photos (especially those imitating old movies) and romantic music. The main theme is the weakest one I've heard, but I really liked the rest of the soundtrack. Especially those pieces that I associate with the 1st and 2nd movements. For 60 minutes I was under the illusion that the first half was done this way on purpose and the movie was about to get going. For the next 30 minutes, I was as sad as a young teenager who was lied to by his parents about getting a great Christmas gift and getting a couple of pairs of socks and panties. I pretended to myself that it might be a parody of the genre, and at the very end there is a scene that will completely change the perspective of looking at this film (as in the case of "Fight Club"). This is like the 5th sequel to "Halloween" (shoot with a number, choose any episode if I miss it), only made by an even weaker director to keep the budget as low as possible. It was going on in the '80s or' 90s because it was relatively fresh + we all knew they were shit movies. The previous part, despite a few goofy ideas (in my opinion, ironic, or consciously realized auto), was a serious film touching the quality level of "The Thing", "Hellraiser 1" or "Halloween 1". I don't know other horror movies, forgive me (Btw. Yes, I criticized "Hellraiser", but a bit too harshly in my opinion - although this one is technically weaker than the others, it has its charm and really stands the test of time). So, you could expect the sequel to take the topic further or just be a good level entertainment. Or a successful parody of the genre. The movie is nothing, it's a fucking circus on wheels in every way that is IMO worse than even these poor horror movies. And this ignoring the context - i.e. the skills of the creators. The others, at least, were consistent, somehow. Hopeless because hopeless, but it was sticky sometimes thanks to saliva. Nobody pretended we were going to get something good (apart from exceptions like John Carpenter's paintings) - it was supposed to be trivial entertainment, a jam of time to relax - something on the level of most Marvel movies.
Halloween Kills on the one hand had some nice ideas that had the potential, but they were implemented so poorly that they are neither serious nor funny. They evoke a smile of pity at best. I don't know if that was the intention, but as for my opinion, I doubt it. It looks more as if the studio forced the creators to do certain things, which made the Frankenstein monster, like the first part of "Suicide Squad", or the creators themselves got lost and did not have a single, coherent idea. There is also a possible option that I was afraid of after hearing that the director had an idea for the whole trilogy - the point is, he had a great idea for the 1st and 3rd installments, but didn't know what to put in between. I don't know what it looked like, but I don't believe the developers' reassurances that they wanted to make a light, loose-fitting film. I would believe it if it were stupid or funny in a consistent and thoughtful way - as are many sequels to old horror films. The idea of hunting this gentleman might have been an interesting commentary on the mentality of the mindless mob. It is enough to convince the mob to something, and they will act like a bunch of idiots whose human reflexes have been taken away and their thinking turned off. It was an equally good idea to show the victim who takes his own life out of despair and fear. However, it was done in such a way that the only thing missing was the musical theme from "Benny Hill" to the scenes where everyone was running around the hospitals with one man. Not to mention the lack of a conclusion regarding his suicide. It could also be a commentary on the saying "When you look at the abyss, know that it is also looking at you" and while fighting evil, you can become a monster yourself. I think you will agree with me that if the creators had done it at the level of the previous film, even if we were disappointed, the complaints would not be as strong. I could forgive a lot of things, even making heroes complete idiots. On the other hand, if they wanted to go into a slasher-comedy, it would be better to show a gay couple, and certainly in a less stereotypical, painful way. And even if it were a film made of film, it was enough to write a few different jokes for this thread. A liter of vodka, three people in one room and good ideas would pop up on their own. It was possible to play with the patterns of the brainless heroes of horror films, which was realized by "In the forest today no one will sleep" at a really good level.
As for the characters, it's just as bad. One of the biggest advantages of Halloween 2018, Jamie Lee Curtis, her daughter and granddaughter, has been parody here. Grandma is in the hospital recovering, daughter is broken and does not know what to do (which is justified taking into account previous events, but it was realized so badly that I could not help laughing), and granddaughter goes with rednecks and victims to find and kill Myers xD. In the previous part I had absolutely no complaints, their roles were led perfectly, and here ... It's not worth talking. The same with the leader of this movement - initially he gave a positive impression and I thought he would be a support for the three characters (or actually 2, because Jamie was barely alive), and the guy turned out to be a stupid clown. Just like the rest of the people. Not to mention the main bad guy has Immortal Mode, as if he typed IDDQD or IDKFA (cheats for "Doom 1" and "Doom 2"). It wouldn't bother me if he had been created like this from the beginning - I don't mind the idea that Michael is actually the result of a cult that evokes some ancient evil ... Blah blah blah. Well, it wouldn't bother me even in this movie if in one scene in these gays there were some magic runes or pentagrams that were used for this. They wasted a good opportunity to explain his indestructibility in the finale.
The film does not fully deserve 1/10, because it has some successful elements (music, photos, sometimes brutality, references to previous episodes, shooting some fragments in the style of films from a few decades ago), but I generally don't care about it. It was a bloody disappointment for me. Normally I would give 4/10 (and maybe even praise him for being a shit but interesting show - if not for the baggage of the previous episode), but I'm too angry to give it more than 1/10. Shit and vomit didn't deserve it.
