Ser gamer tiene sus buenos momentos, pero también te puede conducir a destinos atroces. Si algo hemos sufrido los fanáticos de los videojuegos ha sido la conversión de nuestras sagas al formato fílmico. Hemos perdido la cuenta de cuantas decepciones nos hemos llevado al día de hoy, pero todo parece indicar que, al fin, la tendencia parece tomar otro rumbo.

Being a gamer has its good moments, but it can also lead you to terrible fates. If there's one thing that video games fans have suffered from, it's the conversion of our favourite franchises into films. We've lost track of how many disappointments we've had to date, but the trend seems to be turning in a different direction.

Soy un gran fanático de Castlevania, saga que hizo escuela y fundó bases sobre las que se lograron erigir algunos de los mejores juegos de acción y horror jamás realizados. Mi gran amor por esta franquicia habrá iniciado desde que era muy niño, cuando el destino me llevó a probar el primer título de esta saga en su formato de NES.

I'm a huge fan of Castlevania, a saga that set the standard and laid the foundations for some of the best action-horror games ever made. My passion for this franchise must have started when I was a very young child when I got to try the first title of this saga in its NES format.

The eternal struggle between the Belmonts and the evil forces that bring Count Dracula back to life has fascinated me ever since I had the pleasure of encountering it. Other more recent games introduced me to the genre that was eventually born out of its technological evolution, and so I became hooked on metroidvania games.

Con esos precedentes, el día que me enteré de que Netflix estaba desarrollando una adaptación de Castlevania en formato de animación me sentí genuinamente preocupado por muchas razones. Las expectativas por la serie eran muy altas, pero no sería la primera vez que acabo decepcionado.

With that precedent, the day I heard that Netflix was developing an animated adaptation of Castlevania I was genuinely worried for many reasons. Expectations for the series were very high, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been disappointed.

Afortunadamente, cuando me decidí a ver la primera temporada, ocurrió justo lo contrario: quedé encantado con lo que veía. Netflix, sorprendentemente, ha creado exitosamente una excelente adaptación de un videojuego para una serie de streaming, y ha demostrado que ya no hace falta mirar a japón para encontrar una animación bidimensional de primer nivel.

Fortunately, when I decided to watch the first season, the exact opposite happened: I was absolutely delighted with what I saw. Netflix, amazingly, has successfully created an excellent adaptation of a video game for a streaming series, and proved that you no longer need to look to Japan for outstanding 2D animation.

Netflix didn't made Castlevania only with the large legion of fans that its games have built up over the years in mind, but it hasn't ignored us at any point. It's clear that the Castlevania series hasn't been entirely faithful to the games it draws inspiration from, but it represents them masterfully.

Con solo 4 episodios, Warren Ellis tuvo que buscar el modo de construir algo que valiese la pena ver incluso si no iba a continuar su historia después de eso. Afortunadamente logró su cometido, pero dejó de camino muchos detalles hubieran enriquecido muy bien su argumento desde el inicio. La trama de Castlevania va claramente de menos a más, y esa primera temporada de "prueba" tiene un poco de culpa.

With only 4 episodes, Warren Ellis had to find a way to build something worth watching even if he wasn't going to continue his story after that. Fortunately he succeeded, but he left out a lot of details that would have enriched his storyline very well from the start. Castlevania's plot clearly goes from less to more, and that first " teaser " season is a slight bit to blame.

Many people are just starting out in the world of Castlevania thanks to this series. For Castlevania to be as successful as it has been, it needed to appeal to an audience who were unfamiliar with the games, but who could still be captivated by this universe if it was presented to them properly.

The series manages to balance plenty of fanservice and an exquisite plot to delight the general public at all times. Castlevania offers no surprises for veterans of the franchise, but it is able to hold the attention of any viewer with thrilling action, deep dialogues and memorable characters.

Hints and easter eggs are plentiful in Castlevania. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who nearly screamed with joy at the sound of Bloody Tears during the protagonists' epic entrance to Dracula's castle. It was a tremendous move.

There are many things that have always attracted me to this saga that has always been so full of good gothic art. Castlevania was one of the first video games that tried to create an atmosphere of horror and action. One of the great narrative assets of this series is that it was made for an adult audience.

Castlevania is crude, it's bloody, it's brutal, and it had to be in order to make the most of its backstory. And to enhance the formula, the aesthetics it possesses, heavily inspired by the precious art of the great illustrator Ayami Kojima, is so beautiful it's breathtaking.

Castlevania is full of detailed, dark and vibrant landscapes, with expressive characters.Although you can tell that they sacrificed the number of frames in favour of a higher quality in each one, the result has been exceptional. The art in this series has been truly one of the best produced to date.

If there is one thing that stands out in Castlevania's storyline, it is the development of its characters. Chapter by chapter, Castlevania develops by presenting subplots that coherently justify the decisions made by each of the main characters.

Los diálogos de esta serie son ricos, profundos, y suelen cargar con justas dosis de humor negro y reflexiones filosóficas. El personaje mejor tratado en ese aspecto probablemente es Isaac, quien posee el más destacable arco argumental entre los personajes principales.

The dialogues in this series are rich, deep, and often loaded with just the right amount of dark humour and philosophical reflections. The best addressed character in this respect is probably Isaac, who has the most remarkable story arc among the main characters.

Y debo señalar la pericia con la que se construyen los argumentos. Para hacerlo, la serie es dinámica al darle protagonismo a sus personajes, justificando que algunos lleguen a ocupar tanto el rol de héroe como el de villano.
