Hace unas semanas, a pocos días para la 93ª entrega de los premios Oscar, participé en una quiniela intentando predecir quiénes serían los ganadores de la noche. Este año, por cosas de la vida, no había visto la mayoría de las películas nominadas, y eso era algo que no iba a cambiar en un par de horas. No obstante, al ver que tenía acceso a algunos de los cortometrajes animados nominados, decidí ver los que pudiera y así hacerme una idea sobre sus cualidades.

Al principio no estaba muy seguro sobre cuál votar puesto que sabía muy poco de ellos, y tampoco tengo mucho conocimiento de los cortos que suelen llevarse la estatuilla, sin embargo, tras ver Si algo me pasa, los quiero, supe inmediatamente que esa era por la que iba a apostar (y que, efectivamente, resultó ganadora).

A few weeks ago, just a few days before the 93rd Oscar Awards, I entered a betting pool trying to predict who the winners of the night would be. This year, as life would have it, I hadn't seen most of the nominated films, and that wasn't going to change in a couple of hours. However, seeing that I had access to some of the nominated animated shorts, I decided to watch what I could and get an idea of their qualities.

At first I wasn't too sure about which one to vote for since I didn't know much about them, and I don't have much background on the shorts that usually take the statuette either, however, after watching If anything happens, I love you, I knew immediately that this was the one I was going to go for (and it did indeed win).

Si algo me pasa, los quiero es un cortometraje que nos muestra la dura realidad que viven las familias estadounidenses cuyos hijos resultan víctimas de los frecuentes tiroteos escolares en su país.

En él, una pareja adulta se encuentra lidiando con sus propias emociones en medio de una distante relación entre ellos, con un constante ambiente de tristeza y soledad que los acompaña, incapaces de comunicarse adecuadamente, ambos inmersos en su propia depresión.

Poco a poco, a medida que avanza el corto, empezamos a tener detalles de la historia de este matrimonio, viviendo sus recuerdos sobre su hija y los momentos alegres vividos en familia.

If Anything Happens, I Love You is a short film that shows us the harsh reality experienced by American families whose children are victims of the frequent school shootings in their country.

In it, an adult couple finds themselves dealing with their own emotions in the midst of a detached relationship, with a constant atmosphere of sadness and loneliness that accompanies them, unable to communicate properly, both immersed in their own depression.

Gradually, as the short film progresses, we begin to get details of the story of this couple, living their memories of their daughter and the joyful moments lived as a family.

La belleza de la sencillez

La película, como animación, tiene un punto donde resalta bastante y es en su notable sencillez.

Sus planos no tienen más que lo esencial, es decir, los personajes, los objetos con los que interactúen y lo necesario para saber en dónde se encuentran. Esto nos permite centrarnos en lo más importante de este corto, es decir, las emociones de sus protagonistas, las cuales también están muy bien marcadas en la animación.

La colorización del corto es mayormente en tonos grises, a través de estos, logran expresar muy adecuadamente las emociones presentes, dejando los ambientes más claros para los recuerdos familiares, y los más oscuros para la depresión actual de la familia. Sin embargo, también hacen uso de colores más vivos, en momentos muy específicos del corto, los cuales son ingeniosamente seleccionados para destacar el significado de los objetos más colorizados (como en el ejemplo de la imagen de la izquierda).

The beauty of simplicity

The film, as an animation, has a point where it stands out and that is in its remarkable simplicity.

Its shots have no more than the essential, that is, the characters, the objects with which they interact and what is necessary to know where they are. This allows us to focus on what is most important in this short film, that is, the emotions of its protagonists, which are also very well marked in the animation.

The colors in the short film are mostly in gray tones, through these, they manage to express very adequately the emotions present, leaving the lighter environments for the family memories, and the darker ones for the current depression of the family. However, they also make use of more vivid colors, in very specific moments of the short, which are cleverly selected to highlight the meaning of the most colored objects (as in the example of the image on the left).

Sentimientos expresados en sombras

Uno de los aspectos más interesantes en la narrativa de la película, que además está presente en todo momento, es el uso de las sombras de los protagonistas como recurso para mostrar los sentimientos detrás de ellos, lo que quisieran realmente quisieran hacer.

Se podría decir que mientras los dibujos de los personajes muestran dónde están físicamente, los dibujos de sus sombras muestran dónde están emocionalmente.

Feelings expressed in shadows

One of the most interesting aspects of the film's narrative, which is present all the time, is the use of the protagonists' shadows as a resource to show the feelings behind them, what they would really like to do.

It could be said that while the drawings of the characters show where they are physically, the drawings of their shadows show where they are emotionally.

Un duro recorrido emocional

Por su temática, como se podrán imaginar, no es una historia fácil de ver, o al menos no sin sentir un nudo en la garganta en el proceso, pero es un corto que nos permite conectar y entender el sentimiento por el que pasan las personas que viven situaciones de este tipo (las cuales son bastantes, debido a la situación que han estado viviendo los Estados Unidos desde hace un tiempo).

Adicionalmente, la película nos recuerda la importancia de mantener la unión durante la tragedia, nos recuerda que no hay beneficio alguno en el aislamiento y que estar junto a los seres queridos en las situaciones difíciles, es lo que da más fuerzas para seguir adelante.

A rough emotional journey

Because of its subject matter, as you can imagine, it is not an easy story to watch, or at least not without feeling a lump in your throat in the process, but it is a short film that allows us to connect and understand the feelings that people go through in situations of this kind (of which there are many, due to the situation that the United States has been experiencing for some time now).

Additionally, the film reminds us of the importance of staying together during tragedy, it reminds us that there is no benefit in isolation and that being together with loved ones in difficult situations is what gives us the strength to move forward.
