Last Sunday has celebrated the 94th edition of the Oscars, an event whose transmission brings together millions of movie fans around the world. There are many categories of cinematography that such prestigious Academy awards in that ceremony, being the public's favorites the categories of best film, best director, best-animated film, best actress, best actor, including supporting actors, etc.; but there is a category that usually goes unnoticed by most, and that is the best animated short film.
Short films are audiovisuals that tell fabulous stories in very few minutes, I think I have read, or heard, that in a maximum of 30 minutes. I remember that it was very common to enjoy short films as a preview to movies in the theater, and they were a very pleasant few minutes, with emotional and/or funny stories that served as a prelude to a film production of a higher order. This year's winner in that category was The Windshield Wiper, which I honestly haven't seen yet, but I surely will in the next few days, because I do belong to that small percentage of viewers who enjoy that kind of movie; now, the one I did see, and loved, was the winner for best animated short film in 2021: If Anything Happens I Love You, which I will tell you about next.
El pasado domingo se celebró la 94ª edición de los premios Oscars, un evento cuya transmisión congrega a millones de fanáticos del cine en todo el mundo. Son muchas las categorías de la cinematografía a la que tan prestigiosa academia premia en esa ceremonia, siendo las favoritas del público las categorías de mejor película, mejor director, mejor película animada, mejor actriz, mejor actor, incluyendo actores de reparto, etc.; pero hay una categoría que suele pasar desapercibida por la mayoría, y es la de mejor cortometraje animado
Los cortos, son audiovisuales que cuentan historias fabulosas en muy pocos minutos, creo haber leído, o escuchado, que en un máximo de 30 minutos. Yo recuerdo que era muy común disfrutar los cortometrajes como una previa de las películas en el cine, y eran unos minutos muy agradables, con historias emotivas y/o divertidas que servían de antesala a una producción de mayor orden. La ganadora de este año en esa categoría fue El Limpiaparabrisas, la cual sinceramente no he visto todavía, pero con toda seguridad lo haré en los próximos días, porque yo si pertenezco a ese pequeño porcentaje de espectadores que disfruta ese tipo de obras; ahora, la que sí vi, y amé, fue la ganadora a mejor cortometraje animado en el 2021: Si me pasara algo, os quiero, de la que les hablaré a continuación.
If Anything Happens I Love You takes about 11 or 12 minutes or so, that's the duration of a short film that I guarantee will touch your emotions, especially if you are a parent. This short film has a very minimalist format, it is a rather somber animation, the perfect atmosphere to convey the emotions of parents who are grieving the tragic loss of their daughter. Only the sequence of images and the soundtrack are enough for the viewer to understand the different stages of grief experienced by the couple, which goes through anger, pain, denial, and finally the acceptance of the death. There are no dialogues here, it is a matter of internalizing a visual message very well expressed.
Si me pasara algo, os quiero, se desarrolla en unos 11 ó 12 minutos más o menos, esa es la duración de un corto que les garantizo tocará sus fibras más sensibles, sobre todo si son padres. Este corto tiene un formato muy minimalista, es una animación bastante sombría, la atmósfera perfecta para transmitir las emociones de unos padres que están viviendo el duelo ante la trágica pérdida de su hija. Solo la secuencia de imágenes y la banda sonora son suficiente para que el espectador puede entender las distintas fases de duelo que vive la pareja, que pasa por la ira, el dolor, la negación, y finalmente la aceptación de la pérdida. Aquí no hay diálogos, se trata de internalizar un mensaje visual muy bien más plasmado.
In the beginning, we see a couple living in the same house who lost the connection between them, they are a couple of strangers who live their pain in isolation, they no longer look at each other, nor speak to each other. However, we also see in their shadows, what their spirit represents, what they feel inside but are unable to assimilate, much less express. In each scene, sadness, desolation, loneliness... they are broken inside, which is the least a parent should feel when they lose a child. A fortuitous event awakens their memories, they relive the moments when they were able to enjoy their daughter, and that is how what really happened is revealed to the viewer, something shocking, painful, tragic, and truly moving. It is obvious that I cannot reveal the details, so I will only limit myself to saying that it is something that no parent, nor any child, should ever live; unfortunately, it is a latent reality that has mourned many families.
Al inicio, vemos a una pareja que viviendo bajo un mismo techo perdieron la conexión entre sí, son un par de extraños que viven su dolor de manera aislada, ya ni se miran, ni se hablan. Sin embargo, también vemos en sus sombras, lo que su espíritu representa, lo que sienten en su interior pero que no son capaces de asimilar, mucho menos expresar. En cada escena cobra protagonismo la tristeza, la desolación, la soledad…están rotos por dentro, que es lo menos que debe sentir un padre cuando pierde a un hijo. Un evento fortuito, despierta en ellos los recuerdos, reviven los momentos en que pudieron disfrutar de su hija, y es así como se desvela al espectador lo que realmente sucedió, algo impactante, doloroso, trágico y verdaderamente conmovedor. Es obvio que no puedo revelar los detalles, por lo que solo me limitaré a decir que es algo que ningún padre, ni ningún hijo, debería vivir jamás; lamentablemente es una realidad latente que ha enlutado muchas familias.
I have nothing but praise for this short film, it is a sobering 12 minutes, 12 minutes that should call for reflection, I do not know who it competed against in 2021 to win the award for the best animated short film, I do not know if they were better or not, what I do know is that it deserves the award because they have to be very brilliant to convey the drama of such a sad and painful story without even uttering a single word. I put myself for a moment in the situation of these parents, and I get a lump in my throat, it is incredible how everything can change so suddenly, it is not only a hard blow for them to assume the loss of their daughter but the loss of them as a family, as a couple. The way they face the grief isolates them creates a huge abyss between the two of them; however, I don't know if it is a matter of spirituality, energies, or whatever, but there is a moment when love manifests itself in an unnoticed way to give them a new opportunity.
No tengo más que elogios para este cortometraje, son 12 minutos aleccionadores, 12 minutos que deben llamar a la reflexión, no sé contra quienes compitió en el 2021 por llevarse el galardón a mejor cortometraje animado, no sé si eran mejores o no, lo que si sé, es que se merece el reconocimiento obtenido porque hay que ser muy brillantes para transmitir el drama de una historia tan triste y dolorosa sin ni siquiera pronunciar una sola palabra. Me pongo por un instante en los zapatos de esos padres, y se me hace un nudo en la garganta, es increíble como todo puede cambiar tan de repente, no solo es un duro golpe para ellos asumir la pérdida de su hija, sino la pérdida de ellos como familia, como pareja. La manera en que afrontan el duelo, los aísla, crea un abismo enorme entre ellos dos; sin embargo, no sé si es un tema de espiritualidad, de energías, o que se yo, pero hay un momento en que el amor se manifiesta de manera inadvertida para brindarles una nueva oportunidad.
The law of life says that no parent should bury a child, it is the children who should see their parents die; however, there are realities, such as those denounced in this audiovisual work, that have contravened this law, causing many parents today to bear the pain of having had to say goodbye to their children before their time. To overcome the loss of a loved one obviously takes time, it is to overcome the rage with life, it is to cry until it dries up, it is to understand why, until finally accepting that it is necessary to let go in order to be able to continue. This is obviously said quickly in a few lines, but it is not easy in practice, not at all, what is a fact is that facing the process together, being one the comfort of the other, makes the burden less heavy for both. Trying to overcome grief alone can be even more devastating and uphill, and the film makes that message very clear.
La ley de la vida reza que ningún padre debe enterrar a un hijo, son los hijos quienes deben ver partir a sus padres; no obstante, hay realidades, como las que denuncia esta obra audiovisual que han contravenido esa ley, haciendo que muchos padres hoy carguen con el dolor de haber tenido que despedir a sus hijos antes de tiempo. Superar la pérdida de un ser querido evidentemente lleva tiempo, es superar la rabia con la vida, es llorar hasta secarse, es entender el por qué, hasta finalmente aceptar que es necesario dejar ir para poder continuar. Eso obviamente se dice rápido en pocas líneas, pero no es fácil en la práctica, para nada, lo que sí es un hecho es que afrontar el proceso juntos, siendo uno el consuelo del otro, hace menos pesada la carga para ambos. Intentar sobreponernos al dolor solos, puede ser aun más devastador y cuesta arriba, y la película deja ese mensaje muy claro.
They say that to remember is to live, and that is another very important message of If Anything Happens I Love You, the importance of building memories, memories that are born from the moments fully lived with our loved ones, moments that are built with the quality time we dedicate to what is truly important: family, friends, affections. Only those who are forgotten die; as long as their memory remains alive in our minds and hearts, their presence will be with us. The message is clear that what is really necessary is to live each second to the fullest; tomorrow is uncertain, and there is no time for regret.
Dicen que recordar es vivir, y ese es otro mensaje muy destacable de Si me pasara algo, os quiero, la importancia de construir recuerdos, recuerdos que nacen de los momentos vividos plenamente con nuestros seres queridos, instantes que se construyen con el tiempo de calidad que dedicamos a lo que verdaderamente es importante: la familia, los amigos, los afectos. Solo muere quien se olvida, mientras su recuerdo permanezca vivo en nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones, su presencia estará con nosotros. Cada vez queda más claro el mensaje de que lo realmente necesario es vivir a plenitud cada segundo; el mañana es incierto, y no hay lugar para arrepentimientos.
I don't hesitate for a second to recommend you to watch this short film, I repeat, it's only 11 or 12 minutes, enough time to make your heart wrinkle, get a huge lump in your throat, and for sure, flood your eyes with tears. If Anything Happens I Love You is available on Netflix, if you have the chance, to watch it, you won't regret it.
No dudo ni por un segundo en recomendarles que vean este corto, repito, son solo 11 ó 12 minutos, tiempo suficiente para que se les arrugue el corazón, se les haga un nudo enorme en la garganta, y con toda seguridad, se inunden sus ojos de lágrimas. Si me pasara algo, os quiero está disponible en Netflix, si tienen la oportunidad, veánla, no se van a arrepentir.
